Misoka

Misoka

“I am so glad we are finally leaving that village.”
“Yeah, worst vacation ever. Suddenly war breaks out and we get almost killed. I’m so looking forward to coming home.”
Misoka couldn’t help but feel a pang of envy as she involuntarily overheard the young couple’s conversation. The word 'involuntary' fit quite well, given the fact that the two were standing only few feet away from her on the deck while she was waiting for the ANBU shinobi to return - The man, whose name she still didn’t know and frankly speaking, she wasn’t keen on making one up for him, either.
Morosely, she pulled the hood deeper over her face, but that couldn’t fool her sense of hearing of course. The boy had said "home".
When will I ever be home again? It was a childish, ridiculous question to ask herself. What home did she have in the first place? Needless to say, the clan estate felt like a prison to her. And the house she had been living in with her family for fifteen years of her life? She used to call it home, yes, and she used to feel completely at ease there.
After her mother’s death, however, all of that had changed. From one moment to the other, the whole place would reek of desolation and guilt.
Sleepless nights. Her cheerful father turning into a living corpse who would go days without raising his voice once. She hadn’t been any better: a nervous wreck among other people, especially men. She had spent two years mustering up the courage to apply for a Genin squad. And even then, she would constantly dread the high probability of her sensei being a man, of male team mates.
Misoka grimaced at the memory. So, so pathetic.

The return of the ANBU shinobi was a welcoming distraction from her thoughts.
She didn’t bother to pull down her hood, not because there might be enemies of hers aboard – no, she had already scanned the area thoroughly. But she liked revealing her face or perhaps it just was some sort of habit she had picked up again as fugitive.
Sneaking a glance at the ANBU from below her lashes, Misoka decided to greet him curtly,”What took you so long?”
About everything seemed wrong in these five simple words. Approximately five minutes couldn’t exactly be called “long”. Furthermore, she had formulated the question in such an incurious tone that it was obvious that she didn’t care about his answer, should she get one at all.
Just… cold and aloof.
The guilt kicked in right afterwards. Almost sheepishly, she cleared her throat, trying to think of anything else to say which would make up for her lame attempt at starting a conversation.
But not too surprisingly, nothing came to her mind and so she simply remained silent, watching the ferry take off and their journey begin.

With the uninvited guests taken care of, Bokuden made his way back to the ship to find Misoka waiting for him on the deck. “What took you so long?” she asked abruptly, prompting him to tilt his head a bit to the side as he stared at her. “My apologies miss,” he began hesitantly, “I ran into some people I needed to speak to. I didn’t mean to keep you waiting. I’m sorry if I frightened you.”

The tension between the two of them was almost as cold as the sea breeze that blew over the deck of the ship as it left the harbor and took off towards its destination. There was obviously a sense of distrust emanating off of Misoka in regards to this character Bokuden was playing. Who could blame her? What would most people do if a random masked man came out of the blue, fought off your pursuers, and then insisted on chaperoning you around in a war torn village and then offered to take you to another country? If she wasn’t so short on options the likelihood of her even agreeing to let him help her would have been virtually zero in all likelihood. After all, she didn’t know who he really was.

On some level he was almost relieved she didn’t, though. He was… afraid to show her his face. What could he say to her after all this time? Would she be relieved to come back to him? Would she be angry that he had not travelled to Suna to investigate not hearing from her? Had she met another man during that time and was now looking for a new home to start a life with him. He couldn’t even ask these questions as he was now. She had no reason to say anything to a man who refused to even tell her his name. All he could do was watch over her until they finally made their way back to Kumogakure… and then hopefully…

Shaking off his somber thoughts Bokuden would turn to face Misoka on the deck, waving to get her attention before speaking, “Why don’t head inside to the cabins? It’s terribly cold out here. We wouldn’t want you falling ill before your big arrival, would we?”

Why did he have to apologize again? His friendliness irritated her. He didn’t need to tell her what he was doing or for what reason. Actually, he could have just shrugged her question off. And… besides, what made him think his absence had frightened her? She was fine, really, she could stay put for a few minutes without breaking her leg and the like, thank you very much.
Misoka kept these thoughts to herself, knowing it would be more than rude to say them out loud. Not only rude… ungrateful, too. Even though she felt so reluctant to trust him, he was still helping her achieve her goals.
It wasn’t his fault she had turned out like this: so… socially awkward.
It wasn’t his fault she couldn’t think of anything nice or meaningful to say.
So his suggestion to leave the deck and go inside provided the perfect excuse for her to avoid another frosty silence between them.
“Good idea,” she muttered, even forcing a smile on her lips although he would hardly see it with the hood over her face. “Let’s get to our cabins. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Was it too obvious? …That she only wanted to escape their conversation? That she would rather flee to her room because she was used to being alone with her thoughts? Misoka hoped not. If it could be avoided somehow, she didn’t want to come off as impolite.
After all, she had always cared about manners. Some things just don’t change so easily or she simply didn’t want them to.
Giving the ANBU a nod, Misoka went on ahead, throwing a glance at her ticket in order to find out which cabin was hers.

Bokuden exhaled a sigh of relief as he watched Misoka make her way down to the ship’s cabins to get some rest. While an isolated ship in the middle of the ocean might not have been the most secure of locations, it was better than staying in the Village Hidden in the Mist. Not only were there external factors like the war making the area unstable and unsafe, but it was now painfully obvious that whoever it was that was still after Misoka knew where she had been, and in all likelihood, where she was going. He might have dispatched the group on the rooftops, but the fact that they knew to follow them there told Bokuden that this wasn’t done yet. Someone with the reach and resources to make it this far in their pursuit was unlikely to simply cut their losses.

That however, was inconsequential at this point; Bokuden was there now and whatever sick game they had been playing with Misoka was over. The sea was calm, but Bokuden knew that rough waters lie ahead for them. For now though, it was good enough that she could rest safely and hopefully get some sleep.

Restful sleep was one of the few luxuries that were forever out of Bokuden’s reach. Neither wealth nor power could calm his mind, but having Misoka here now at least brought him some modicum of comfort. That was enough for now.
