It still felt bizarre to be taking orders - the fact that it was from something that could only be described as the mystical hybrid between man and bird did not even enter the picture. This time he was charged with collecting a rare delicacy for the Tengu - a python. Kyōbōna understood the desire for tasty meals - hunger was a terrible thing and a feast , especially a delicious one was perhaps the best thing in the world something that even surpassed sex or fighting which was saying a lot. However in order to find the serpent Kyōbōna had to leave his familiar haunting grounds in the valley of mountains. The Wild West was unfamiliar to him and this put Kyōbōna on edge thus he constantly surveyed the area looking for any sign of things out of the ordinary. His senses bestial as they were had a sharp edge and could easily pick up things that a normal man would miss. His experience with cliff face caves allowed him to dodge the various sink holes that could lead a man to his doom but he was still utterly wary as the area stank of foreignness.
Getting into the mind of a serpent was difficult - he understood the savage instincts of the bear but not that of the cold reptilian intelligence. Hunger was universal but the methods one took to get their food was not. Some snakes were poisonous and others utilised strange methods of startling their prey into their grasps. The Tengu had however informed him that this particular specimen preferred to kill by constricting it's prey in it's coils crushing them. Spotting a tree in the distance the Amida decided that he would make his way to this singular landmark under the proviso that it was the only thing of note within several hundred meters.
However on his way to the landmark something cool and scaled wrapped around Kyōbōna's leg. It looked like Kyōbōna's prey had found him instead. However the reptile was sorely mistaken If it thought it could take down the massive warrior. The python at twelve and a half feet was large for a snake it was not one of the 24 foot monstrosities that some species of python grew to become. The snake began to coil further up Kyōbōna's body but was met with heavy resistance when one of his meaty hands caught it's neck. The reptile began to struggle and wiggle as the grip tightened. Having recently been subject to a literal bear hug the amount of pressure that the snake exerted was not nearly as intimidating as It might be. Forcing the snakes face level with his Kyōbōna pondered on how best to dispatch of the beast. The beast wiggled and writhed attempting to bite and snap at him.
Taking a page from the snakes own book Kyōbōna leaned over and with a single bite sheared through the snakes neck crunching down on it's bones snapping them with his large sharp teeth. The snake was dead In an instant. This errand was almost too easy almost a waste of his time if the Tengu had not promised to get rid of the new and terrible experiences that had been haunting him. As he turned to leave however he realised he was not where he once was but instead facing a great ocean that swept out towards infinity in all directions. This was wrong - there had been no sign of anything like a pond let alone an ocean before. It was happening again clutching the dead snake Kyōbōna searched for a possible route to escape but stopped dead when there was simply none in sight.
To make matters even worse there was something sailing towards him. A ship of some kinds bearing several figures all clothed in white robes and headdresses. As they drew closer Kyōbōna noticed that none of the figures were amongst the living. The crew of the vessel were shades clutching to ancient bones clutching copper ladles in their bony hands. One reached out it's hand to Kyōbōna and motioned for the ogre to join them on their eternal voyage. Looking to his feet Kyōbōna began to search the small amount of land that he still stood upon for stones that he could cast at the spectres. This however proved to be utterly futile as the spirits merely became insubstantial and the missiles sailed right through splashing into the water on the other side. In the distance gargantuan black shapes began to surface peering out across the ocean with wide staring eyes. Kyōbōna’s hackles raised made the decision that any action was better than no action and simply dived head first into the water. Something large grabbed him by the leg and then he was pulled on down into the murky depths.
An indeterminate amount of time later Kyōbōna rose from unconsciousness slowly passing through the dream states and into what he assumed was reality – though this was becoming blurry these days. He appeared to be in an underground cavern , snake still clutched firmly in his right hand. He must have fallen down one of the many holes that dotted the cavernous underground labyrinth. This might have proven a problem for lesser man but to Kyōbōna this was vastly preferable to the hazy visions that he was experiencing. One could easily just dismiss them as hallucinations but the distinct taste of salt lingered in his mouth and his hair was still feeling damp. Best not to think too much about that and rather focus his attention on getting out of his present fix. Digging his claw like nails into the soft rock of the walls Kyōbōna began his steady ascent back to the vast plain above. If nothing else he had gained the serpent and the tengu would be pleased upon his arrival.
Head first he burst from the sand looking this way then that nothing in sight , everything was desolate as it was. Time to depart these cursed plains and make his way back to his mountainous stomping grounds.
