Daremo

S-rank
By the time Daremo exited the home shared with his family, including his mother, the morning sun had just started to heat up the earth. Dressed in a two-tone brown kisode, black hakama with a matching obi, and wooden geta, his shoulder-length hair was pulled back and secured in a low hanging ponytail by a pair of black-tipped senbons. Asides from the pair of visible senbons, he held no other visible weapon own his body, yet, it would be foolish to believe the man was any less dangerous. Though, he highly doubted he needed any weapons at all, considering the place he was heading this morning.

Entering the market district, citrine eyes looked about at the crowd of people who littered the section of the village. There was a somber atmosphere around many of the faces which he passed. The feeling being expressed by a lot of the populace, and for good reason. It had only been two days since the Raikage untimely death in the hospital. While no official statement had been released on the subject, it was leaked that the Kage had been sick for some time, and it is believe that what eventually caused his death. Of course, there were rumors circulating of his death not being that simple. Theories spreading his death was caused by the action of other villages in fear of the man’s might, but, none of those theories had any facts behind them, merely speculation at best.

Now though, with the loss of their leader, many of Kumogakure no Sato and in Kaminari no Kuni was at a loss of what to do. Who would be the next one to take up the Raikage’s mantle? Would they command the presence that Hastur did? Would they be the firm and motherly ruler of such as Lin? Or will they be as one of the predecessors before the aforementioned ones? Will they actually hold onto the Raikage position, and bring advancement to the village? What will change when they get elected? Who is in the running for the said position? Will other countries take advantage of their weakened state? Such were the questions on many people minds after the loss of the Raikage. Behind the somber attitude, there was uncertainty and fear for the future that awaits many in Kaminari no Kuni, Daremo could see it. Indeed, the country was in a troubling time without a military leader to guide them, and it would be interesting to see who the Daimyo and the council will elect to be the next leader.

Dismissing the troubling thoughts for now as he came to a stop the entry of a dojo. Citrine eyes looked towards the door of the establishment, spotting the Raiu clan symbol. Looking about, he could appreciate the near tranquil quality that seems to elude from the surrounding place, as he took in the surroundings. He was here to meet up with a certain hermit. A hermit who he befriended some time ago. The one who had to pull him, and by proxy, his family, into a war against Hastur. Now that the man had died, he came here to speak with Raiu Mizuki. To see how things were going, and to discuss the world happening. For there was much to talk about considering what all had happened. Thus with that in mind, he had sent out a letter to the Raiu clan, asking to speak to Mizuki within her Dojo, about the world at large. As he stood outside of the dojo, he just hoped, the woman had received and accepted the proposal.

"Loyalty, Vigilance, Perseverance"

The three pillars of the Raiu dojo had not forsaken their position nor lost their sovereignty despite the turmoil Kumogakure had experienced. The black kanji deftly drawn upon old parchment surrounded the kamidana even today, quietly keeping watch over the dust-covered ground as if the long-term absence of sensei and students did not discredit its power. The way the dojo in its entirety maintained a sense of quiet discipline within the surrounding chaos left no doubt to whom exactly it belonged to as it exhumed the same solemn confidence in the middle of a raging storm as its current owner - Raiu Mizuki.

Swirls of incense rose from the kamidana, the earthing scent of sandalwood inspiring people within the building to aspire to new levels of mastery within their art. The sticks which created the curling smoke had been lit by a young woman, who sat in front of the kamidana in meditation. Unlike what this area would expect, she wore no keigo gi. No outfit that hinted at a readiness to teach. Instead, she wore silken blue hanfu with orchids as decoration, bearing a cream coloured skirt under it. Kneeled before the kamidana with eyes closed, she slowly regulated her breath as she meditated upon which path she'd have to take within the near future.

Her source had it on good terms the Raikage was dealt a lethal blow, but the conclusion of that remained a source of gossip and hopes. Some claimed the man dead, others whispered about ruse. Even then, Kumogakure was not out of danger yet. Jashinists still rampaged, taking down what they could in unbridled acts of violence. The shinobi were in chaos, hardly distinguishing friend from foe due to the interference of the resistance and the political manipulations of its leaders. But those felt like trivialities at this point. A matter of cleaning up the aftermath; the consequences of such a vast choice as opposing a Village from within. What mostly mattered to the woman in question was what to do after that - once peace and harmony returned.

Years of diplomacy had eventually wrecked the Village she had wanted to see rise above others in martial skill and enlightenment. While she might well be one of the most politically influential shinobi since long in the history of Kumogakure, using words rather than force to influence outside forces, she found the weight of redundancy press hard upon her shoulders as such units hardly fit within the brutal, war-like mindset of shinobi. Retiring from that position seemed like a logical conclusion, if anything, but that would also leave her with precious little to make herself useful to Kumogakure.

At the same time, the diplomat-grown-hermit had found solace and respite in the lifestyle of the yamabushi, seeking enlightenment where possible while wishing to share that insight with others. Being a sensei didn't sound all that bad but the woman had never been one for squads or dojos - not even when her father was still around. She had always been a solitary being who kept her relations with others mostly to a strict professional level. And sitting here, in the dojo her father had entrusted her, did not change the nature of her personality in the slightest. But it did invoke nostalgic memories.

Her meditation would drift to a conscious state when she felt the prick of life step within the radius of her hermitic senses, whispering the arrival of a familiar individual who had recently sent a letter to her - Daremo. Aside from musing how oddly familiar she had become with picking up the presences of others, she did not let him wait for too long outside, inviting him in with a clear-voiced, "The door is open, Daremo. You are welcome to come inside."

Standing outside of the dojo, Daremo marveled at the sight of the impressive building. As much as he wished the issue regarding Hastur and those under him had been dealt with in secret, that was not the case. A rogue element from Iwagakure no Sato made ruckus throughout the lightning country in it’s an attempt to remove the Raikage, something which it believed the people of Kaminari no Kuni lacked the capability of doing. there was nothing subtle about the man’s actions. Thus there rose a risk of Jashin slashing out against those who they believed opposed them, and Daremo did not believe they were below striking out against a dojo, even if it was own by a diplomat. Yet, seeing the dojo standing, showing little signs of wear, was a pleasant sight.

Amidst the worries of Kaminari no Kuni’s person, fear of what will happen now with Kumogakure no Sato not having a Raikage, and the current troubles brewing in the world, and with many people losing hope, the Raiu Dojo stood above it all, like a pillar of strength to those in Lightning Country. He would be the first one to admit it, but, the owner of the Dojo was more well-received than he was. For he, was just another face amongst many. An outstanding medic-nin who is only known for such, unlike Mizuki, who was a respected diplomat, who was obviously well-study, an apprentice of a former Raikage who was also generally liked by the people. Thus as long as the dojo remained standing, and the owner is present, Lightning Country had something to hope for.

Standing outside of the dojo, he did not have to wait long to hear a familiar voice welcoming him inside. Though he had known she was here, his sensory having picked up on her, he did not step into the dojo without being invited first. For, Daremo could be considered a lot of things, but, he was only rude to those who weren’t his friends, or at the least, acquaintances, and Mizuki just happened to be someone who he had some attachment to. Sure, there were some unresolved issues with her, but, those did not stop him from caring for her, somewhat.

The one who he asked for an audience for was kneeled before the kamidana, which rested between a pair of parchments with the Raiu symbols on them. “The lack of students surprise me.”, he spoke, looking about the empty room with the only occupants being them, and stopping to the right of her, “Either none of them realize what a blessing it would be to be taught by you, or you are an extremely picking sensei.”

Taking up a seiza position beside her, Daremo allows the silence to engulfing them for a moment. The peace and tranquility of the place washing over his very being, “With the sudden death of our Raikage, the people in Lightning Country are worried. Even now while walking through the village, you can feel the uncertainty and nervousness within those who you passed.  They do not know what will happen to Kumogakure without there being a Raikage to guide them.”, the silence was broken with the words spoken. He not hinting at the fact of knowing who had a hand in the Raikage’s death, “If the Siege of Inabayama was anything to go by, the concerns are valid. And, if you go by the rumors of what the late Raikage did at the impromptu Kage summit regarding two of the three criminals who destroy Suna, there is a target on our backs, even if we did not have a hand in that dealing. Times are right for the other nations to attack us, for we are without a leader.”

Citrine eyes glanced at the woman beside him, “Of course, I do not entirely know what the rest of the world feel about us, I only have my own speculations on the matter.  I would like to hear what you have to say on the matters at large. You do have the most experience when it comes to understanding these matters.”, he spoke.

"Either none of them realize what a blessing it would be to be taught by you, or you are an extremely picky sensei.”

With those words, Daremo would greet her and unlock a giggle from the woman. She didn't believe it was either of the two options, merely that her long-term absence had done the dojo no good as there had been no one around to run it in her stead. And now that the Village was in turmoil, peaceful training was not at order as many fended off the remainders of chaos. The resistance, if anything, was far from finished. The people needed them even now to give a semblance of hope and order within these dark times.

Those same thoughts were confirmed by Daremo in turn, who informed her of the Raikage's death. What had been gossips to her seemed to be reality to him. While she wanted to object these were only rumours and that victory was not yet confirmed, she stayed her tongue as something about his words hinted that the man knew more than he let on. Could his ANBU training have played a role? Possibly, as somewhere in the depth of her mind Mizuki would not be too surprised if Daremo had even be the cause of the man's death. But such suspicions would amount to nothing. If Hastur had truly died, it didn't even matter to Mizuki who had killed him. The 'dark god' had been slain, the future of Kumogakure could only improve from there on out.

"Indeed. The death of Hastur has created a power vacuum. Kumogakure is more vulnerable than ever now. Old clans will push their champions forward in an attempt to seize the opportunity. Rise to power. The Hinode, the Tsukino, the Kaminari, my own clan, just to name a few. While I doubt they'll risk walking into Hastur's footsteps, the inner strife as their champions seek to claim the seat will demand additional attention from the shattered leadership we now hold.

Your words state truth, too. Hastur's ambitions have destroyed more than just Kumogakure. We have a lot of amends to make. First and for all to Sunagakure for taking in the three Destroyers. They were given a place within Kumogakure's troops rather than having been executed as the S-rank criminals they are. We also owe Sunagakure for trampling upon the ruins during the Siege of Inabayama. As if taking in those criminals was not sufficient a slap in their face, returning to the desert to further break down what little remained standing is not going to be forgiven easily.

But where these grievances will provide little retaliation on a militaristic level, the same can't be said when looking at the other Villages. The old feud between Kirigakure and Kumogakure left untreated by Raikage Sanosuke has yet to be addressed. My mentor Lin wanted it closed but she disappeared before she could push her vision forward. Whereas I may have been lucky that my status as diplomat did not drive Ayakashi to kill me on sight when I met her, it does not mean the situation remains unresolved. Such old feuds are politically reasons enough for Kirigakure to waltz in and lay waste to what little remains of our Village in the name of vengeance or justice.

Neither should we forget Konoha. They have kidnapped our members during the Siege. Why, I do not know. I can only assume it is merely to make a point about how they currently feel about us. But with the Dragon of Konoha at the wheels, a man we both opposed during the Siege of Inabayama, there is a possibility he will channel his burning rage towards Kumogakure as well. After all, few would oppose that thought after the meddling of Jashinists during the Chuunin Exams - Hastur having targeted the weaker link like that could well be a strategy that will bite us in the back.

The only Village I do not see as an immediate threat is Iwagakure. Their forces have been sensitively absent during the Siege of Inabayama and I have several connections with members of their forces. With what Hastur did during the Kage Summit, they have reasons to lash out to us, but it'd be a sore reason to seek war for a blown up mountain. So if push come to shove we might be capable of pressing towards a neutral stance with them. It might not be much but one head-hunter less that seeks Kumogakure's destruction is one sorrow less to worry about."

Having shared her point of view on the matter, Mizuki would fall quiet to let the words sink in. Speaking them out loud had only opened her mind to the sorry predicament her Village had fallen into. Part of that her own mistake, either as Herald or as one of the resistance leaders, part of that by the madness of an idiot. The only difference between the hermit and the dark god being that she had come to insight and now sought to rectify her mistake. The other... Well, it is said that 'dead men tell no tales'.

"You were a kage before.", Mizuki began, remembering the revelation of his true name - Nanashi, former Tsuchikage. Hinting she'd be invoking his own memories as a man who had stood in a top position such as Hastur. "Based on your experience, other than finding someone to fill up the seat of power, what would you expect to see done in a situation such as this?"

His friend was not blinded to the truth that comes with Hastur’s sudden death. A power vacuum had indeed been created by the lost of the egotistical, alas powerful, Raikage. While she mentioned the power play clans within the village would surely make, wanting nothing more to put one of their own into the seat to give their clan more political power and influence, she did not see the others who will be moving. With Hastur gone, the proverbial leash that had been tighten around the neck of Jashinites, and other criminal organizations, had been suddenly and unpredictable cut. No longer did they have to fear the hand of a God, for the supposed God was now dead. With no one in power to keep them in check crime rates will most likely go up, causing more issues for Kaminari no Kuni and her people.

His thoughts were shifted towards the other villages which had been affected by Hastur’s ambitions. Unfortunately, Mizuki was correct that Hastur had ruined Kumo’s relationship with many, if not all, of the other villages. Briefly, his eyes drifted in the direction of Kaze no Kuni, remembering how the former Raikage took in two of Suna’s destroyers, instead of executing them where they stood. If things were different, and the two destroyers were killed, there might have been a chance repairing of the relationship between the two villages wouldn’t be so daunting as it currently seem. Alas, the Raikage did not do that, instead, hiding the criminals within Kumogakure no Sato, and painting a bigger target on the village’s back. In the back of his mind, he briefly entertain the thought of Hastur being the one behind Suna’s destruction in the first place, him being the mastermind behind the village’s downfall.

As hinted at, Suna was not the only country who had issues with Kumo, for almost every other nation did, as his friend pointed out. The feud between Kumogakure and Kirigakure had yet to be settle during Hastur’s reign. Issues stemming from the previous Raikage, Sanosuke, and his detainment of Kiri-nin had yet to be rectified. While he did not know the whole story regarding that particular situation, he knew, from what he knows of it, that it was a mess which needed to be cleaned up as well. Then there was the issue with Konoha, with the death of Rippa, a returning Hokage had took up the mantle once more. The Dragon of Konoha, if one would to believe his companion’s words, and he had no reason not to, the current Hokage was the same man who they crossed paths with within Suna. There was nothing stopping the man from raining hell down on the village. For how could force mobile when they lacked a leader? Sure, the council was there, but would the military force actually listen to the men and women behind the scenes? Daremo doubted the would.

He could not help but to agree and disagree with his friend’s comment regarding his old home. While Hastur did nothing to provoke the stone shinobi, his presence did cause some issues, something which he was going to inform Mizuki about now, “Unfortunately, I would not be surprised if Iwa sought their sights on Kumo as well. Their current Tsuchikage is a complete hot-head, who prefers meddling in the busy of others than dealing with the problems at home. Surely you have heard of the man causing a havoc throughout Lightning Country in his attempt to weak or kill Hastur? He attack all of those who he believed was allies of Hastur and his regiment. I know for a fact some of supposed supporters were innocent, or supporter of the rebellion.” he revealed, “Honestly, I wish Earth Country had chosen someone else for the position. It would have been more beneficial for us.”

Stoic as ever, Daremo did not blink when his past of being a Kage prior, instead, he focused on the question that was asked. What else should be done in a situation like this, “The council should have called for an emergency meeting with the Jounin Commander, and other prominent military leaders,  moments after Hastur’s death have been confirmed, and started containing such critical information from spreading outside of the village and country respectively. No other nation should know of Hastur’s demise. A blackout of information to prevent it from being used against us. Not only that, the council should have stressed to the leaders the importance of maintaining their division better than they once were doing. Leaders actually need to do what their position entail, and lead their units without mishap. A bolt of confidence should be spread throughout the military force, giving them hope that everything will eventually be okay, but, also give them the reality of the situation that is now presented with the lack of a Raikage.

Foreign shinobi should have been asked nicely to leave the country, or escort beyond our borders. Unfortunately, the average civilian will talk, and it is incredibly easy for a foreign shinobi to find out information from a civilian who knows more than they should. By removing foreign shinobi, the information regarding Hastur’s death would be less likely to be leaked out to the masses. The clan leaders themselves should have been told this was not the time to make a power play at a position. The last thing Lightning Country needs is clans manueving around each other in an attempt to gain more political power by having one of their own as Raikage. This country does not need the added issues on top of the Jashin, and the other criminal organizations that will surely pop up now with Hastur not in the picture.

Personally speaking, the council should make use, or start using, spies. Planting them in the other villages to find out any information that would benefit Lightning Country. A well place spy is the difference between being prepared for an attack, or being caught off guard by one. It is an invaluable tool that needs to be used, especially now of all times with nearly every village has a reason to turn their sights on us. In short, the council, military leaders, and clan heads need all to be on the same page when it comes to making sure nothing happens to the village or country. “

Having spoken his opinion on the matter, he allowed Mizuki a chance to digest everything that was told., and waited to see if she had anything to say on the matter so far.  “With your return back to Lightning Country. What are your plans in helping this situation? You do have some influence in the military field for being the apprentice of Lin, and the current diplomat.”, he asked, being curious on what would be her next move.

Daremo's insights as a former kage were quite different from what she had expected. In many ways, it looked like he was tightening the hold over his domain. Leaders stepping up, diverting attention from the matter at hand towards the goals. Information on lock down, and where possible already planning for counter-espionage just to remain a step ahead. Strategy on a whole different level, a field of vision quite different from the diplomat who was mostly send out to foster relations and represent her Village. It was unfortunate that Mizuki, other than being a diplomat, had little power or influence.

Sure, she had been in a squad once, which broke down as her mission send her away from Kumogakure. In comparison, she had never lead a squad since she had rarely been home. Her presence in Kumogakure had been restricted to her genin years, then her home-coming after a long-term mission across the globe that granted her special jounin rank, and now, to lead the resistance against Hastur. In all other times, she had been away from Kumogakure and mostly performing it on a solitary base with the exception of an ally, caravan or bodyguard once in a random while.

Mizuki held no power within her clan either. Partially as she was rarely around to make her presence known, partially because her family had never bothered building up much influence. They had been the owners of the Raiu dojo, which granted them a lot of prestige, but that was about it. Political clout might allow Mizuki to sway a few things in favour of the greater scheme of things, but even her words were to be considered by the clan leaders before a final decision was made. Earned respect, while a merit to have, held little actual power in the old, traditional clan of the Raiu.

The divisions of Kumogakure did not have her name in their registry either. ANBU activity hardly matched the kunoichi's duties to pull all attention to herself, while the speculated 'Immortals' of Hastur had been given too little attention in general. And even if they had, the question remained if their position within the Village were the sort of tasks that enriched a diplomat's. The best Mizuki had to offer on terms of leadership was the accrued experience of various wars - the destruction of Sunagakure, the Siege of Inabayama and the civil war; each and every of those milestones having taught lessons no book or class would grant her. In truth, she was a thrice-fold war veteran. Fighting greater scale battles such as these were more of a 'comfort' zone to the hermit than shinobi missions at this point - a poor form or bragging rights, if anything.

But none of those could truly answer Daremo's question. Where did she, after all of this, stand in the hierarchy of things? The hermit was only acknowledged as a special jounin within the shinobi ranks even though her battle prowess had allowed her to remain standing against a well-trained jounin such as the Dragon. Twice, even. And though a diplomat would be a cherished treasure for the new Raikage, the problem was that Kumogakure currently had none. Without a leader, there was nothing to represent for a diplomat. Not to mention that the diplomat-grown-hermit felt little desire to maintain a position which had caused the destruction of so much.

"I... do not know.", she began. "Without a leader, a diplomat has nothing to represent. It is not possible to foster relationships and seek out alliances at this point. None can be convinced by a Village in turmoil such as ours.

I also seek to step down from that position. Stay a hermit, settle down home after all the years of travelling, and share what I know with the future. I believe there is, at this point in time, little else to do than restoring the wounds of Kumogakure to the best of my talents. Lin was a teacher and iryo-nin once; I might make her proud yet with my decision to walk in her footsteps."

The hermit smiled faintly at those words. She had tried her hand at diplomacy, hoping to roll out the notion of peace and improved relations across the world so that Kumogakure's economy and presence would flourish. And though she ultimately failed, she knew Lin would have been proud for believing in a peaceful and open-minded approach. Not all were dreams and wishes though. The iryo-nin with her white panther had not parted without sharing the basics of medicine and herbalism. Mizuki was, thanks to the discipline required for the Raiu's Storm Release, unparalleled in chakra control. This had allowed her to pick up iryo-jutsu fast. Much faster than her actual knowledge about the Healing Arts, causing her to be a less favoured option for hospital work or more delicate restorative tasks.

"What are your plans? Do you aim to return to move with your family and return to your former home? Or do you have plans for a future within Kumogakure?"

The question which he proposed to his friend was not one that could be answered without some thought; therefore, he did not mind that she was taking time in coming up with an adequate response. He indeed was curious on the woman’s plans now she had returned back home. For while she might not like it, Raiu Mizuki held a lot of respect and admiration from not only the shinobi populace, but also the civilian ones. Undoubtedly, with Hastur’s death, people would look towards her, for some form of guidance and/or stability. Ignoring the fact she was the diplomat for a madman, something which he was curious on how it came about, she was, more importantly, the apprentice to one of Kumo’s more beloved Raikages since the likes of Reika. So, whatever she decided to do will be looked at by those who look towards her for guidance and reassurance.

As she began to speak, Daremo turned his head to look at the woman. Listening intently as she spoke of not knowing what to do now that the village is without a Kage, and how she believed the role of diplomat is null and void due to the aforementioned absent of a leader, but, also because of the current turmoil. The response was not one that he was expecting. A diplomat duties are never truly done, even without a kage in office. They can still help foster relationships with the surrounding cities and towns within the native country, for, as far as he knew, Kumo’s relations with some of the towns are less than stellar.

He mentally frowned at her desires to step down from the diplomat role. If the council allowed her to step down, which he could see them fighting tooth and nail to deny the request, it would be both a bad and good thing for Kumogakure. Just as there were people who love and admire Mizuki, wishing her to remain as the diplomat for Kumogakure, there were those who saw her as just another puppet of Hastur. She was the voice of the tyrannical Raikage, and everyone in the Elemental Nations knew that. While keeping her as a diplomat works with strengthening any good relations she made outside of Kaminari no Kuni, it would also hurt Kumogakure when seeking alliances with the other nations. They could see her trying to continue on pushing Hastur’s agenda, even if that was not the case.

The mental frown changed to that of happiness when she mentioned wanting to settle home after years of travelling, and share of experience with the future generations. He could not agree with her more about healing the self-inflicted wounds Kumogakure and Kaminari no Kuni is suffering from. There was much to be done for those who love the village and country dearly. A subtle smile grace his stoic expression at the mention Lin, and how she wish to follow in her mentor’s footsteps. While he never met his relative, he had seen others in Kumo respected and loved the woman, “It is disheartening to hear your desires to step down from diplomat. But, I can understand the reasons why doing so would be a good idea in general. The world does not have a good opinion on us, and with you being the diplomat during Hastur’s tenure, some could very well target you as the reason why the previous Raikage was allowed to get away with as much as he did. While you are certainly not the cause for Hastur’s actions, some people will not see it that way.” he spoke honestly, “Saying that tho, having you back in the village is wonderful, for it give those who still admire and look up to you some semblance of hope and stability. You have experience many others do not have, and by sharing that, it will only strengthening and help this nation. I, personally did not know my distance relative, but, I have no doubt she would be proud in who you have become, and what you wish to achieve now.”

Daremo smiled at the question asked, “I do not have any plans to return home. Although that would mean leaving behind the Okiya that I grew up in, and all those who make up my extended family, I am content living in Kumogakure. As a father, I could not subject my daughter to my homelands when it was there where she was kidnapped, and almost sold into slavery by the infinity gang. I can not be under the rule of the reckless Tsuchikage who seems to be following in the steps of some of the more infamous Tsuchikages. As far as I, and the rest of the world is concern, Guanyin Nanashi was killed in the line of duty.”, he spoke. “Kumogakure is my home now, I have made new bonds here that I wish to cherish, something which my youth would scoff at. Furthermore, I am aiming for something that I held once before, only in Iwa.” at this, he turned his head in the direction of where the Raikage office would be, “Only this time, I will do the job right.” Of course he was hinting at short time as Tsuchikage, but, whether Mizuki would be able to put two and two together would entirely be up to her.

Wanting to change the conversation to a lighter tone, he spoke once more, “I know this is was not apart of the meeting, but, I recently found myself needing to learn kenjutsu. And seeing how you are skillful with a blade, are you taking on any students?”, he asked.

"Your words are most kind.", she thanked Daremo for his welcoming. Coming home again was something she needed, after four years of wandering. The smell of the jacaranda blossoms outside, the sensation of being home, the sound of the familiar streets, the sound of the Land's thunder and soothing rain. She had not known how much she had missed all these little things until she had set foot again in Kumogakure. And now that she was here, she held little desire of moving away. Home... was where she belonged.

Daremo, too, seemed to have opted for a life in Kumogakure despite his origins. In comparison to herself, not because he felt home but more of an unfortunate series of events which had left a bitter aftertaste. Their dear friend had not made it as the new Tsuchikage, seeing a man rise to station of which Mizuki held little info and who would not find a friend in Daremo, from the sound of it. She had been part of the raid on the okiya, but not on the kidnapping of their child. Where once she had believed Kumogakure's slums to be in need of more shinobi influence, she now considered it a relative acceptable place in comparison to what festered within the unruly lands of Iwagakure. The shinobi she had met, and believed to be part of its semblance of order, had long since vanished, been killed or turned coats in favour of other Villages. It left Mizuki to wonder what would become of Iwagakure now.

"I believe Kumogakure has room for a new okiya. With the inner turmoil, many people died or left the Village. Surely a few buildings within the trade district or the cultural district must have opened up for them to move to a new place. With you deciding to stay in Kumogakure, you could become their patron. Like samurai often do with their favourite places. Besides, should you not have known yet, I'm all for the cultivation of a refined culture and enlightenment so you certainly have my approval as diplomat."

What came next was more of a surprise. A sobering revelation, in fact. Daremo aimed for the spot of Raikage. The thought seeped into Mizuki's mind. A troublesome thought, for what little she knew about the man caused the young woman to have some concerns when it came to Nanashi-now-Daremo. The ANBU, his retaliation during the okiya raid, his demeanour during Konoha's Chuunin Exams, the long-term hiding of his true identity... To her, he was a puzzle of which many pieces were still missing. But at the same time, he might well be the only person she knew and adequately trusted not to grow insane on power - the man had already revealed his dark side, and how he was more than capable of returning to the semblance of a mere mortal man caring for his family. Something that could not be said of men like Hastur or Mitsuo.

"An ambitious plan but your opposition is strong. Every of Kumogakure's clans will push someone of their own forward, and while many generally receive outsiders with open arms, they will not be so giving when it comes to the hat. That being said, I know of few people that might hold sufficient presence, power or political clout to prove a strong opposition against the other Villages. It is now, within Kumogakure's inner turmoil, that you stand most chance to succeed."

Perhaps it was for the better if Daremo picked up the hat. Not only because it would allow Mizuki to keep an eye out (and beat him with a stick if he was being stupid), but simply because the clans would be in great conflict as every one of them would try their hardest to 'make things right' again. While their intent was noble, Hastur's presence left a deep wound within all of them. That wound needed time to heal, bewildered minds brought back to reason. Or so the kunoichi believed, her long-term absence offering precious little information on the recent development of Kumogakure's mindset.

Leaving her words for Daremo to think about it, Mizuki allowed a moment of silence to settle again before Daremo broke it with an unexpected request. The man who was as capable as a jounin searched to improve his skillset still, wanted her to teach him kenjutsu. Taking a measured breath and allowing her eyes to wander through the dojo, Mizuki didn't reply instantly. Was she taking on students? There was a lot left to do with Hastur gone... And the dojo was in need of some cleaning... But could she refuse a student when she had just declared to seek a new path for herself?

"Now that I'm back home, I guess I should start somewhere. I have yet to reopen the dojo as its rightful owner but I believe I can make an exception for a promising student such as yourself. How far exactly do you seek to go in the arts of the blade? Are you content with the basics, matter of not cutting your own limb off when swinging the katana? Or do you aim to become a student of this dojo in full? My father once prided himself to be a teacher in iaijutsu, kiaijutsu and kenjutsu seishin, paving the path to learning one of his personal styles. One of these is the Heaven Sword style which I wield, the other is the Willow Dance style which could be taught if my bratty sister ever returned home.

The Heaven Sword style relies on a single katana and embodies the power of raiton. It is characterised by broad, powerful blows which aim to break through defences much like lightning cleaving the trees. My father called it a duellist fighting style, as it was inspired upon his father's Executioner Arts and intended to overpower most of the samurai's katana styles.

The Willow Dance style, on the other hand, makes use of the katana and wakizashi and relies less on personal strength, but more on redirecting the strength of others. It flows as water, seemingly gentle in its approach to push opponents towards their demise. Weaving offence and defence together in a cadence of steel. It is as poetic and beautiful as it is deadly, but less fit for one on one duels since it is oriented towards crowd control."

The thought of bringing his extended family to Lightning Country did cross his mind on a number of different occasions. But, becauses of the circumstances at the time, with the former Raikage in power and his cult still having a strong grip in the country, he decided against it. “The thought of forming a new Okiya here did cross my mind in the past, but, with everything going on, I feared for their safety. Though, now, with the threat of Hastur gone, I do believe it is a good opportunity for them to move here. Especially now considering who is the new Tsuchikage. I do not trust that man any more than I did Hastur.”, he spoke.

Asides from his family, Mizuki would be the only one who knew of his intentions in aiming for the position of power. Hinting at previously holding a Kage position might have not been the smartest thing to do, but, he felt like he could trust the woman beside him to keep the information to herself. As far as he knew, she hasn’t told anyone about him being former Anbu, or his origins being based in another village. So, for the time being, he saw the woman as one of the few people who he could trust with some information.

However, that is not to say, he was open about everything. While he admitted in wanting to become the Raikage, and do it correctly this time around, his reasonings for wanting the position ran deeper than that. Despite the actions of the previous Raikage, Daremo did find himself making friends with the inhabitants of the country. He found himself enjoying their company more so than he did with those in Konoha, or even in Iwa, to an extent. Bonds had been formed with the people, and a budding urge to protect them. There were good people in Lightning Country, and he wanted to make sure never happens to them. Of course, he also has a personal reason for wanting the spot, and that is to protect his family. His family meant everything to him, and he is damned if he allowed another Hastur-like figure to rise to power.

“It would be surprising if I did not face such challenges as I contend for the hat. I can not fault the people from being wary of an outsider aiming for the Raikage position, especially considering the actions of the previous kage; a relatively unknown individual. I will have to win not only the civilians and shinobi over, but, also the clans within Kumogakure no sato.”, he spoke, knowing well he was facing an uphill battle when it came to claiming the hat for himself, “I will need help in making my ambition a reality. Thus, I am asking you, would you help me in the endeavor? I know you are stepping away as a diplomat, and I am not asking you to return to that. What I need in someone who thinks the opposite of me. Someone who challenges my way of thinking, help me see things differently, and open doors that would normally be closed to an outsider. What I need is an advisor, and someone with your diplomatic skills.”

Daremo never had the intention of keeping Mizuki as the diplomat of Kumogakure no sato. He believed she had served her time in the role well enough and did wonderful despite the boss she worked for. No, his desires for the woman was that of an advisor. Someone who can help him gain the Raikage hat, and be there to give him advice on topics surrounding Lightning Country. While he had been here for a long time, he was not a native. He did not know everything in regards to Lightning Country and its inhabitants, and he needed someone who did, hence Raiu Mizuki. She was the only one who he could trust in the matter in helping him. Of course, everything hinges on her accepting it.

He did not have to wait long for an answer regarding if she was willing to take on a student. As the answer was given, he filed away the information regarding her sister. It would be something that he would ask about later on if the opportunity arises. “For now, I would like to learn basics, and not harming myself. You have seen the whip-sword I use until I get an adequate katana, something I will be looking into, the basics will be enough.” he admitted, “So, where do we begin?”

Raiu Mizuki

"What you ask of me is not easy.", Mizuki replied as she raised her eyebrows. "As you stated, Kumogakure will be wary of strangers but there's not saying how they will perceive my presence. My suggestions to position you as the new Raikage will be heavily scrutinised, my credibility put into question. My loyalty to Kumogakure remains, at least to myself, undisputed but when it comes to political games they will hold me account for having heralded Hastur's arrival. My part in the resistance that took the same man down will be a reason to drive a rift in my allegiances. Even if they are not convinced of their own words, games of that level are a matter of winning the debate and less so about telling the truth."

And there was the case she'd have to be invited to the Council first. Her long-term absence could be a reason not to include her as it meant she had little sight on the internal affairs of Kumogakure. At the same time, the information she could bring in from other Villages were an equal reason to have her be offered a seat without hesitation. Having no sense for future sight despite the rumoured supernatural powers of the yamabushi, Mizuki would have to bide her time and see what the future brought forward. That being said, the question remained: was it a sage suggestion to have Daremo, a stranger to Kumogakure, be seated upon the throne?

She had seen firsthand how he had dealt with those touching his family or okiya. The seed of a prosperous relationship with the civilians of Kumogakure were there. A stark contrast to what Hastur had given the Village, and thus a card that could be used in his favour if others were willing to listen. But at the same time, Mizuki was unsure if he would treat the civilians in the same way he treated his family. Was his heart big enough to fight for an entire Village? At a similar level, it was clear he held insight on militaristic matters of a level that was expected from a kage. But here too, questions surfaced. Did Kumogakure really need yet another war? Was that the sort of knowledge Kumo expected from its Raikage at this point in its existence? What was Daremo's point of view on reconstruction? On reforming the Kumo-nin to get them out of their twisted war-mind and back into an acceptable shinobi-mind? There were still too many questions left unanswered.

"I'm sorry but I can't give you a proper answer at this point in time. Too many questions seek answers still unspoken. I believe you hold the potential to lead Kumogakure into a brighter future, yet I am also worried your vast ANBU knowledge and militaristic strategies may weigh down in your decisions and push Kumogakure back into years of war and turmoil. Kumogakure is torn in its loyalties and confused in its promised future. Its spirit is in need of restoration.

What I can give you, however, is advice. Do not only think of the knowledge you hold, but also about how you wish to apply that knowledge for the better of Kumogakure. How do you intend to reshape Kumogakure should you be given the hat? What is the path you envision? How can your knowledge, or lack thereof, benefit in the achievement of those goals?"

The questions were not meant to be answered right away. Rather, they were meant to put Daremo's thoughts into the right direction. He too had work to do if he intended to reach for the hat. Not just in word and thought, but also in spirit and action. He had to learn about and from Kumogakure, understand its spirit and heart were he to become the mind that directed it. And that required time. Time they might not have.

With both of them in need to get their minds cleared on the matter, Mizuki stowed away the discussion about the hat for now. The dojo was not meant to discuss such topics, and so she was more than glad to hear him declare what exactly he was looking for. The basics. With him wielding a sword-whip, learning the basics of kenjutsu shouldn't prove all too difficult. She'd raise to her feet and nod in understanding before she'd pick up a bokken from the racks positioned on the side. As proper tradition dictated, she'd lift it a little under her eyes with both hands and bow towards the kamidana as if to seek the blessings of the kami for the use of this wooden training weapon. Then, she'd turn to Daremo to hand him the bokken in a similar fashion, and bow slightly as he came to accept the blade. The Raiu would then do the whole ritual again as she picked up a bokken for herself.

"You should be more than capable of picking up the basics of kenjutsu considering your own weapon of choice. I'll skip the 'conquering the sword' tradition. A man of your skill does not need to prove he is capable of enduring the bearing of a blade. I'm certain you'll quality as is. So what is left for you to do is observe proper stances and attacks. Then it'll be your turn to execute them, and I'll correct you where that'd be necessary. I'm certain you'll catch on quickly, but it is possible we might need a couple of training sessions to get it all done."

Once she was sure Daremo got all of that, she'd begin. First, demonstration of how to properly position the blade, and draw it. She'd show him how to shift into the basic of stances to maintain a solid footing while providing ample possibility to step in for offence or step back for evasion. Her steps were measured but at a pace sufficiently relaxed so not to strain the eyes or concentration of her new student. Next came the first few strikes. A vertical slash intended to cleave a person in two or hew off an arm. An upward slash with the same purpose. And finally a somewhat tricky cut that sliced open the belly of its victim to have their guts spill out - an attack mostly intended to cut right under chest armour.

"Let's start with these before going on to the rest of the attacks and defensive techniques.", she'd sheathe her bokken at those words and observe Daremo's movement, meticulously explaining how he could improve and correct his stance and strikes where such was required.

Putting it into Perspective [Mizuki] SX3pd3Z

The question he was asking her was not one to take lightly, Daremo knew this the moment he entertained the thought of her becoming his advisor. A lot of responsibilities comes with accepting the role of advisor, not only will she have to help him in his campaign for the Raikage position, but, she would be scrutinized by the public as well. Her words on the matter spoke of the truth how some people would believe she was helping another Hastur type figure get into power. Questions would arise on her credibility in supporting the right candidate for the Raikage position, and would have to deal with that. Yes, he knew what he was asking her was a difficult question.

That is why, when she could not give him an answer right now, he accepted it with a nod of the head. There was still some time for her to agree to become his advisor in his move to take over the Raikage spot. If she did not wish to be his advisor, then, he would find someone else who would. Nothing negative would come from her dismissal of the proposal, and their friendship would remain in tact. He was not petty enough to cut off a friendship because she did not want to work with him in this regard. No, he valued the working friendship the pair had more than that.

Her following words was surprising, but, also telling at the same time. It was clear as day she wished for the next Raikage to not be like Hastur. She wishing for a Raikage who was not a warmonger who sought conquest above all. She called into question his time spent in Anbu, and how it would affect his decision making in the long run. Although the question did not needed to be answered right away, he did so anyway. He wanted her to understand some of his thought process. “War and turmoil is the last thing I want for Lightning Country as a whole. My desires for Lightning Country is to stay away from war, and focus on internal affairs. Kumogakure’s relationship with many of the towns and ports in Lightning country range from good to bad. Those need to be fit so that Lightning Country as a whole can come together, and believe in one another. For, as of right now, some cities don’t want anything to do with us. The people are my priority, giving the civilians a means to live safely and happily, and given the shinobi a means to continue growing into their desire positions. Only after fixing the internal issues can Lightning Country move to make allies with other nations.

I will use my Anbu and military knowledge to protect Lightning Country’s people from those who wish to do her children harm. But, I won’t baby them. They will have to figure out things on their own. They will have to learn and adapt. They will need to grow into themselves. Like a parent, I will give them the means to do so, and guide them when needed. “

Having said what he wanted to, the conversation shifted to something else. He having come here not only to talk about the world they live in, but, also get lessons from her in kenjutsu. There was no one better, in his mind, that could teach him what he desired. Thus, the question was asked, and an answered was received, and he rose to his feet, and followed her towards the rack of bokkens. Citrine eyes trained on Mizuki, watching as she lifted up the wooden sword and bowed towards the kamidana. When one of the bokken was passed to him, he bowed and  mimic what she had did prior.

Listening to her speak, Daremo was interested in the ‘conquering the sword’ tradition, for it was the first time he had heard of such. Though, seeing how she mentioned he would not need to prove himself worthy of wielding a blade, he decided to forgo asking her about it. “Very well.”. Eyes trained on her, watching as she moved with the blade. The basic stances, solid footing, how her steps were measured, and pace relaxed, he committed it all to memory. Then came the attacks, even against imaginary foes, Daremo saw what each strike wanted to achieve. As the last strike was made, then it was his turn.

Calling forth the memories from prior, Daremo started going through the actions which was just performed. It was not perfect at first, there were moments were his feet wasn’t solid on the ground, or he was too tense in his movements, but, with her advice and explanation he corrected the mistakes. After the completing the set of movements once, he spoke, “I want to do them again.”. The desire of perfection was strong with him, his time as a geisha, and the hours spent learning the movement coming to the forefront as he began to go through the movements once more, until he could correctly do them without messing up.

After completely the last strike, he turned to Mizuki, “What is next?”

Daremo's answer fell in line with the general behaviour he had shown in the past. Protective of a few, revealing his worst side only when there was a need to punish others. He had proven this during the Siege of Inabayama where he only seemed to strike down those who marched up towards himself or his appointed protegee. He had moved with her when she had tried to figure out where the Dragon of Konoha had brought Myrddin to. Though they had failed in extracting information, the Dragon running with his tail tucked between his legs, she had learned much about his skills in the coming period. He was not one to quickly seek destruction or death, but rather an avenger who punished those who deemed rightfully deserving of his wrath - a harrowing kind of wrath.

What surprised her most was his inclination towards the other cities. While he didn't come over as another Hastur in all the time she had known him, she had not thought he was interested in such diplomatic relations. He seemed more like the man that tended to his own in quietude, seeking the refuge of shadows and solitude. But he was not wrong when he said relations were strained. With the Jashinist interference, those relations were possibly even worse now than they had been in the past, meaning a lot of effort would be needed to improve what had been ruined by careless violence. The idea to approach this, as well as the restoration of Kumogakure, like a good father was therefore an appealing one. Patience, care, yet with the freedom to develop themselves so as to find their place within everything. It was an appealing future in the eyes of the hermit, if anything.

Part of that future was being tied in with the Raiu. Aside from the question to be an advisor and stand at his side, he was also being trained in her weapon art of choice - the katana. As she observed his movements with the bokken, regularly adjusting his posture to grant him the best balance and energy flow, her mind lingered briefly upon her sister. It had been long since she had seen her elder sibling, no information whatsoever having surfaced up ever since she had escorted the merchant back when she was a genin. Aside from missing her sister, she also felt like she had failed her father by not succeeding to bring back Eris. Eris had mastered her father's dual-wielding kenjutsu style, the Willow Dance Style, an art the hermit missed and therefore indirectly made the dojo miss out on talent and skill. With just herself, the dojo was incomplete even if Kiyoshi had bestowed the responsibility of the dojo upon the shoulders of the youngest. Daremo's thoughts on internal restoration lingering, Mizuki contemplated if it would not be time to pull some political strings and call in favours to find back that bratty sibling of hers.

When Daremo had pretty much reached 'perfection' for a trainee and asked for the next set, she nodded and started to demonstrate those as well. The next set of strikes was ridiculously simple in their approach, being simple horizontal slashes, but the detail laid in the height they aimed to cut open. The first one aimed at the middle, again right under the protection of most chest armour, left little to the imagination. It was as gruesome an ending as the one she had demonstrated before and would result in having their guts spilled out. The second strike was aimed at the height of the knees, the intent to cut off the limbs or at least sufficiently cripple them so as to have the opponent lose balance and mobility. The last one aimed to slash open the feet at the height of the ankles. Hewing off the feet resulted in the same loss of mobility. While few beginners understood the need for slashing at different heights, an experienced fighter such as Daremo could easily understand that it was not the attack that caused the difference in the battle art, but the defence against them that spelled the life or death for the opponent. If the opponent did not properly avoid the attack, the kenjutsu specialist was offered an easier time following up the first strike due to the advantage granted in positioning. The last strike in the series was a simple 'tsuki', or stab, which was followed-up with a sideways exiting hew if so needed.

"These are all of the traditional basic strikes.", Mizuki declared. "Weaving them together properly is a skill that takes a long time for many of the younger members to master as it requires not only proper positioning of the stances and blade, but also requires precise application of power without revealing an opening to your opponent."

As another demonstration, she'd show what she meant. She'd step in with an upwards slash, weaving it into a downward slash as she took another step closer, finishing it with a stab in the direction of her invisible target with yet another step, and adding the sideways hew to total an amount of four attacks in one fluent motion. Meaning that all in all, she could potential have chopped off two arms before piercing the abdomen or heart and cut it further open as her blade exited the body. Even if her target would survive such a combo, their lives would never be the same again.

"This accounts for the basic offensive techniques, and an example of combat application.", she explained, then motioned with her hand for him to mimic the second series of the attacks, which she would once more guide and correct where it was required. If Daremo succeeded to get the hang of these moves, she'd flash him a satisfying smile before proceeding. "I suggest you practise these for a while. Then we'll meet again to see your progress, and build further upon what you achieved."

Daremo

Putting it into Perspective [Mizuki] SX3pd3Z

Daremo had always been a studious person when it came to learning new things. Distractions did not play any role in preventing himself from learning the material at hand, of course, he had to first have some interest in the subject. Once an interest had been acquired, or curiosity peaked, he gave the subject matter at hand his undivided attention. If he was going to learn something, then, he might learn it the best of his abilities, to begin with. For he did not like wasting his own time, or those who are the time he is taken by asking them to teach him on the subject at hand. Time was a precious commodity in the world, considering how little people have of it, thus, he had no reason to waste it.

Hence why his attention was squarely focused on Mizuki. Watching the Raiu clansmen go through the next set of movements that he would attempt to learn and replicate. He focused on every action she took. The way her muscles moved with each individual strike was memorized by him. And, just like before, Mizuki showed her talent for the sword arts. While he did not know many swordsmen, she was by far one of the best he had a scene, and he was grateful that she decided to take him on as a student; the latter part being ironic considering them sharing the same rank.

With the last movement coming to an end, Daremo knew it was his time. Taken up the bokken once more, Daremo slowly moved through the strikes performed just a moment ago. He took his time in going through each individual one, using what he had remembered to correct himself. There were times he did mess up, but, Mizuki was there to correct him on the mistake, putting him back on the right path. After the last strike was performed, a smile spread across his face, he was pleased with what he had learned. Citrine eyes looked at Mizuki, the smile ever present, “Thank you for helping me.”, he spoke with gratitude, “I will surely practice what I have learned, and the next time we meet, I will show you the fruits of my labor.”

After the words were spoken, Daremo placed the bokken back to where it belonged, and bid Mizuki a farewell. Leaving the dojo he was pleased with the outcome of the day’s talks. While he did not convince her to become his advisor, he, at least planted the seed in her head. Then, there was the fact that she agreed to train him. So, overall, today was a good day for him.
