The day was rife with festivities, and the exams were in full swing. For many, this was a time of celebration, as it was not uncommon for residents of the famed Land of Fire to use even the smallest modicum of reasoning to celebrate and party. The organized and institutionalized death-battle in which greenhorn shinobi were pit against each other for not only the prospect of progression but the entertainment of others as well was as good of a reason as any. On this particular mid-autumn day, several of the arenas had been occupied by hordes of screaming pedestrians and shinobi alike, all gathered to watch the plethora of exhibition matches that would precede the main event in a few days time. Takao himself had stood in the stands, watching the matches at each level, from the low-skilled genin to the explosive battles of Jōnin that left their arenas scarred and irreparable. But now, it was his turn to participate. Just as he had in the previous exams, Takao elected for a hand-to-hand only exhibition match. His method of fighting was far too explosive and destructive for the small arenas, and going ‘all out’ would surely risk the thousands of onlookers. His name and another’s were announced as the next bouts and, just as the crowd had done to each fight before them, the audience erupted into a roar of cheering and shouting, eager to see the next fight. Takao had long since slipped from the stands to the preparation rooms. He hadn’t the need for gear in this fight, thus he donned only his shinobi slacks, trademark boots, and black tank undershirt, leaving his myriad of equipment behind. Takao stepped out of the hallway leading into the arenas and stopped at the raised platform. Before him stood a hundred meters of flat land encircled by tall cement walls. Spaced evenly apart from one another were twenty-four openings, and from the darkness of these openings, twelve perfectly straight train-tracks ran from end to end. Each track looped to the next on its left side, alternating parallel in the walls on the opposite side, to connect the twelve tracks into one, and allow the trains upon the track to run their course without the need to pause, not unlike how multiple electrons would circle an atom on their tracks. Looking down beneath him, he could see a large steam train with four cars, each measuring approximately ten meters long and four meters wide. He was only given that moment to assess his surroundings before the proctor announced the start of the battle and the four trains began to move, blowing their whistles and setting the engines alight as the wheels began to turn. Takao didn’t hesitate and leapt from the platform nearly ten meters up, landing with a hard thud on the metal train roof and denting it slightly under his weight. Maintaining his balance on the moving platform was of little issue, and his black eyes were set upon his destination. On the other side, another train was beginning to pass under his opponent, and they would cross at the intersection, allowing the one to board the other’s vessel and begin their bout. |
