Mission Details:

Verdandi arrived at the lake stadium in the rather early morning. Receiving her briefing about todays tasks and that she was going to oversee some of the matches that will take place in the arena. Verd thought nothing much to it, considering that the little brats were all about Genin level and there would be nothing she couldn’t just blink into at a moment notice with these little rascals. Considering that, the overseer had his own additional request. Having a couple of Genin on the list that have requested to assist the match guardians and learn something, both from watching other contestants and from getting some valuable advice from a more veteran shinobi. While these requests seem to pile up and not many of the arena safety personal were on Verd’s rank to take it easy. The overseer insisted that Dandi would have to take one along and lessen the burden on his shoulders to be looking for someone that could take care of them. Verd agreed under the pretense that she could pick a name from the list herself. It was actually just her way of getting a sneak peek at the list as she wondered whom was trying to get an advantage over their foes by learning some last-minute tricks in between the matches. Verdandi ogled over the list and could hear herself mentally yawn at the long list of names that said absolutely nothing to her. However, she suddenly got her eyes peeked with interest as she could see the name Yuki on it.

Verdandi asked the overseer what he knows about the icy boy and he was afraid that he couldn’t really indulge her much, considering he was managing hundreds of these Genin a single name didn’t ring much bells in his ears. Verd would shrug it off and decide to find it out the old-fashioned way, in person and by conversation. She would get to a few intros matches that left her both intensely bored and without much to do. The ones she’d be responsible for were about to come a bit later. In the meantime. The overseer would arrange to inform the boy that he had a quick find on the take-your-genin-into-the-stadium day. Verd was playing with some self-made ice crystals and occasionally nom’d on them to indulge herself during waiting. Supposedly some of the higher tier Genin, veterans that were probably more Chuunin grade but just failed the previous exams were about to come up. Verd thought, that it would mean for a more exciting spectacle for both, herself and the young boy that was supposed to show up soon. She pulled the list of matches forth and tried to recall any of the names from her time in suna as she had seen plenty of the rather skilled ones in the Konoha camps. Most of them doing support missions only considering it used to be a complete warzone for the whole project. She eventually would hear the footsteps of ‘Yoshito Yuki’ incoming and was looking forward to see her cousin.

His hands were halted, the mist that once surrounded the two ceased existing causing the once blurred image of the two fighting become fully visible to those watching. A proctor appeared in between Makoto and Yoshito holding the Kiri genin’s wrists tightly stopping his onslaught that would pierce his opponent’s neck like a peeled open can of peas. Yoshito was panting heavily trying to catch his breath. After utilizing the substitution jutsu to get in Makoto’s face the boy was a little flustered as his mind was racing on what to do next. He was focused on the objective being to win the match for his village. Suddenly without moving a voice rang out to announce the winner of the match for the crowd.

“Winner is Yoshito Yuki of Kirigakure!!”

The voice was loud and said with vigor. Yoshito was ecstatic, his heart pumping hard as the crowd began to roar, some boos who probably lost a bet but mostly just cheering on the winner. He could hear the distinction of the crowd saying the words Yoshi in a rhythmic pattern. Yoshi let his hands down before turning to Makoto and offering a bow as if to tell the boy it was a good match. In truth, if his last rush hadn’t turned out this way he would most likely lose. He could feel his chakra pouring from his body as the proctor showed Yoshi to the corridor closest to the two contenders. When the three of them entered the corridor the sound of the crowd from the stadium dumbed down and Yoshito could finally hear himself think. More important, he could hear the proctor tell Makoto that his dog was waiting for him all healed and better now that the match is over. Yoshito looked ahead intently with his head slightly lowered when he heard the news about Makoto’s pet. He couldn’t get in a word before the boy rushed off to the dog. So that was the thing I hit. Damn. Yoshito couldn’t help but to feel horrible about that, it was only a dog and Yoshi had just hit it with a shuriken. He was only trying to finally get an edge in the battle, the thing felt so small to Yoshi that he thought it could have been Makoto but in the end it was just the four legged animal who is always there in people’s needs. What a sad thought indeed.

“You have a mission Yoshito, after you rest I will send someone for you.”

Rough knocking on Yoshito’s door awoke him from his rest. It was true that he needed rest to recover from the day’s events beforehand. His eyes shot open and his body jumped to the door in his underwear and nothing else. An older man was at the other side of the door who looked him up and down like he was disappointed. With a heavy sigh he told Yoshito that he should hurry up or he’d be late for his mission. “Ah shit!” Yoshito slammed the door and threw on some clothings that were easily accessible and quick to put them on. Some easy gray sweatpants, a snow white slightly tight tee shirt and on his way out Yoshito would grab his headband from the stand before the door. Opening it and making his way to his mission that the proctor from the day before had told him to go to. On his way there were people in the streets that waved him on and some that would even holler out that he did a good job yesterday, seemingly still cheering him on for some reason. A smile couldn’t help itself from plastering on Yoshito’s face as his body filled with pride. He must have done a great job in his fight for even foreigners to praise him. Although, they were there for a show and they got one for sure even though most of it was covered by a mist.

Yoshi put his headband around his forehead and tied it tight as his legs brought him up the stairs until he was where he was meant to be. Upon reaching the top of the stairwell his body would pivot both ways until he noticed his mission partner. She was an obviously older woman but not much older than Yoshito if he had to guess, her figure was nicely curved that made his younger body tingle with excitement but he wasn’t that type of character. He remembered Aito from Kaito and Koryu’s mission and he flinched slightly at the thought of pulling off something stupid with an older female again. “Hey I’m Yoshito, what’cha watching” Yoshi said as cool as he possibly could trying not to seem so green as a shinobi. He was still a little worn from his battle the day before so some nice relaxing conversation would be good for him. Yoshito leaned over the railing that his partner was doing as he looked on to a stadium much like he was in the day before, flashbacks of the struggle quickly entered and exited his brain. “Another fight eh, sure is gonna be a lot of them.”

Verdandi found herself glaring at the matches with little to almost no interest. The combatants in that stadium were both rather weak and led to a rather simple match with almost no chakra being used at all. Kunai hitting each other in the middle. Shuriken missing their intended target. Some of them failing to execute their combat moves. It was kind of embarrassing to know that some of these kin were trying their luck at the exams. Considering it was supposed to be open for skilled and slightly experienced Genin and not for the kids right off the academy. Verd however had never participated in an Exam. She had graduated from the academy just after the last one had finished and never had gotten the chance to try her luck in it. Now that another one was up, she at least wanted to have a peek at them and how they work. Considering that she mainly had come here as part of aunt Ayakashi’s escort she found herself lucky to have been given loads of free time now to have some fun with missions while Aya was busy doing all the official politics stuff. Verd chuckled to herself as she was reminded of the funny mental picture of Aya sitting in between leaf officials with the Hokage and trying to somehow look amused while she was obviously in deep pain from being forced to deal with all that. Better her than me, is what Verd thought about before her day dreaming was eventually disturbed.

A cute young kid that gave off a rather heavy Yukigakure vibe was standing in front of her. She would muster him from head to toe, she had been surrounded by Yuki Clansmen since her very birth both in Heidel and in Kirigakure. Heidel was obviously overpopulated by Yuki Clan that wanted to remain close to their ancestral place of origin in the north, while in Kiri a lot of snow people had found a new home after the north’s destruction. Thousands of Yuki kin were alive by today and it was after all, one of the largest bloodlines that existed. In a huge family like this, there were many splinter sub groups and family bonds that differentiate themselves from one another. Yuki, Aisu, Kori, Snow, Dao, Solstice. Just a few common names from larger family branches that eventually all ended up calling themselves Yuki for the by the far largest branch of all as their main house. Verdandi was both of Yuki and Dao blood and had more relations to the fancy kin of the royal court and feudal lords of what once used to be Yuki no Kuni, the land of snow. While their homeland had little left to rule over, her family was still in power and Verdandi was left with the sweet little title of being one of the three snow princesses. She had enjoyed a life in luxury and vast attention. Being looked after and taken care of through almost every step of her youth.

Verdandi couldn’t help but wonder which family branch this one was from. If he had an active bloodline limit or not. While there were thousands of Yuki, only a small percentage of them actually ever unlocked their ability to control the frost within their genes. Another question was, if he was of Yuki or Kiri origin. Many generations have led all their life in Kiri as it was but the protective big brother of the land of snow. Many of the people that were born and raised in Kiri might have only heard tales of their ancestral home being revived at the hands of the Dao branch. Verdandi had the Dao insignia, the Yin and Yang symbol in golden threads woven into a shoulder part of her Jōnin outfit. If Yoshi was in any way familiar with that age-old practice, he might be able to see both the Yuki insignia and the royal family insignia. But if a boy at his age would care for things like the historical background of his clan… that was questionable. Most boys his age just want to fight and prove themselves by hitting others harder then they were hitting them. It left Verd to chuckle as her thoughts and day dreaming mind had taken her far from the actual situation once again. In fact. Only a few split seconds had passed while Verd would idly stare at the young child. And eventually she’d speak as to not cause any specific social awkwardness.

“Yeah, we gonna see a couple of them today. Hi, I’m Verdandi Yuki, you must be Yoshito. Pleased to meet you little cousin.” She smiled the smile that was her most cherished weapon of mass destructions. The very way the Dao had brought all the other clans to serve them and support their power. Not by means of oppression but with wits, smart leading skills and an insane amount of charisma. A genetic trait that had now found its way into Verdandi herself. The radiance of her smile was as honest as it might be breath taking. She knew it was, it however affected different people in various ways. It was always fun to watch what ‘the charming smile’ would cause in a new person. Usually most results were rather enjoyable to watch. Despite being insanely self-secure, Verd was however far from an arrogant ass and wasn’t going to push her little mind games. It was just a fun thing to do in the first place. “Come, sit down. This match here is boring but hopefully the ones we’re going to see close up will be more interesting.” She gestured to the chair next to her with a gentle pat. Due to the rather recent win of Yoshi that has barely been a few hours if not at most a day ago, Verd had no clue about him being the successor of his own match. But while she would have congratulated him, he would probably have to forget about his own matches for a while anyway. It was time for work.

Yoshito’s hands were resting lazily over the railing into the space that the stadium allowed. Presumably, they were up on the highest floor they were allowed to be. His eyes looked upon the two contenders whose battle seemed to be more thrilling than his own match was. His eyes watched as two people threw shuriken that collided, another pair of kunai flew through the air and the metals collided again hissing as they ricocheted into the ground in opposite directions. The two genin would rush forward at one another, one had some type of aura while another had a sandy shield covering his body. Once they met the real battle was on. Compared to Yoshito’s battle, he could actually see this match when the crowd in Yoshito’s battle couldn’t see a thing unless they themselves had some way to see within the mist at that range. It was an intense match within the mist but otherwise, you would most likely be bored within the stands. The one with the sandy shield had spikes protrude outward at his opponent, the opponent with the chakra aura jumped overtop the sandy boy, his shield covering his body as he did so to protect himself. The sandy boy halted his advancement and looked up to the one who jumped over and around, the one with the aura would then extend his fist forward at the sandy one but he was too far for it to be effective. Suddenly the aura that surrounded him formed into a fist matching his physical movements and it would plow into the sandy boy who would be sent backward a small bit with the sand still protecting him.

Yoshito was enthralled in the battle when Verdandi introduced herself. Yoshito was taken aback when she said her surname, Yuki, and his hands tensed into a fist when she said they were cousins. Not only the fact that she was a natural beauty that Yoshi had laid eyes upon in such a way, but cousins? He and his family hadn’t really been close enough to see each other let alone talk about their heritage when they settled within Kirigakure. All he knew is that his mother and father were from and met in Takigakure but now this woman says they were cousins. This could be the one link to allow Yoshito to finally find out about his family and what they were, who they were, and what they were meant to be. There had to be more than what Yoshito knew, running from people constantly hoping for a safe place. The thought of having someone so close to him from his family made him want to cry, he was feeling a mix of a couple emotions at the thought. Angry, sad, desperate, all of these emotions and more would swell up within his mind as he took it all in. A young boy such as himself didn’t know how to handle all of this, he would only take his body from its lax position and turn to his older cousin and wrap her in his arms with his head resting on her bicep. He didn’t know how he should handle these emotions but this was the idea that popped in his head as the best way to do so.

He released the woman quick so to not make it so awkward between the two as they had just met and would push himself away only slightly to look at her more and get every detail he could about the woman engraved in his mind. She bore the Yuki symbol on her shoulder and another strange symbol he hadn’t seen before but that wouldn’t be important yet or ever. Her smile was inviting to Yoshito, he would feel like he could really open up to Verdandi unlike others who he had met. More than Sachi, more than Xiao, Kaito, and even more than Chigetsu. It was then that he really noticed her facial features, more notably the different colored eyes, one red and one as blue as the sea. It was an odd sight but it most certainly wouldn’t stop the emotional display he was showing his recently found cousin. Yoshito would make his way to the chairs that Verdandi had patted for him and took his seat promptly. “You think this is boring you should have seen my match big cousin.” He was filled with pride just saying that, finding another relative was something he never thought he would do. Living most of his young life on the run he hadn’t seen another member of his family ever. His legs were rocking up and down, pushing them from the ground with his toes. He was in comfortable clothing but his mind was everything but, he didn’t know what to say to his cousin, he wanted to impress her somehow and maybe telling her about his victory would do that but he didn’t want to seem braggy. “I just won my round one yesterday, was a rough one but it was covered in mist the whole time, the crowd couldn’t see much.” He said trying to play his match off like it was no big deal and even the win wasn’t that big of a deal even though his heart still pounded and didn’t feel one hundred percent from the chakra lost.

Verdandi was certainly taken back at the young boy’s reaction. Considering the amount of Yuki Clansmen that existed she had never before met someone that seemed to be genuinely happy simply by hearing her name. He even moved in and hugged her. ‘Oh Boy’ was the first thing that came to Verd’s mind. Not sure if this was going to be a rather awkward meeting. She was hoping not but luckily, he didn’t remain clingy into the hug. The young Yuki seemed a bit unusual or a bit over the place with his mind. He had been expressing a certain aura of interest and jealousy from glaring at the match, then went through a seemingly emotional breakdown for the connection to a new relative and now tried to act prideful and a bit showing off even. Verdandi couldn’t help it but laugh. It wasn’t meant to be mean. It has just been a rather fun thing to watch the complete three-sixty-degree emotional turmoil of a young Genin broken down into a mere few minutes. Oh well, he’d eventually grow into a more collected persona over the coming months. The process of turning Chuunin usually would force the young kids into a maturing process that didn’t care for their age. Verd had experienced it when she was 16 and how it slowly transformed her empathic mess of a brain into a well-oiled machinery that could be counted on in combat. At latest, when one has to face a battlefield like Inabayama where thousands of dead await in a result of war at the end of a battle.

But for now. He was but a little jumpy boy with seemingly a lot of emotional turmoil to fix. He was hyped. Proud and was hoping to give his best shot at these exams. Little did he know that often not the better shinobi wins, but the one with the better cards given the circumstances. Improvise, adapt, overcome. He’d have to learn it in time. But for now. He was allowed to have fun and enjoy himself. It actually woke Verdandi a bit from her smiling but rather stoic mindset about todays mission. She was supposed to have fun here and not bring down the mood. The jumpy outburst of her cousin reminded her that she was here to have a good time. She sighed. Standing up to walk in behind Yoshi and place her hand on his shoulder. Giving him the smile, he could have only craved for. “You did well. Don’t stop, keep fighting and if you lose once. Wrap yourself back up and keep fighting. We are ninja. In the end, we will fight what we believe in until we eventually all come to an end. Fight with honor and dignity. Don’t be the sad sack. And don’t try to force a win just cause the odds have been ill against you in a fight. Act the way you will be proud of yourself in hindsight. That’s what matters most.”

Verd knew that the chances of someone winning the exam were slim, considering the seemingly hundreds of contestants that were all craving for that one final title. She sighed and just hoped that in their quest for greatness they wouldn’t forget that the pathway there is always the actual fun part of the whole thing. But he would have to figure it out on his own. She was his cousin. Not his mom. But while all of it went down smoothly in this talk. Verdandi would eventually disappear from Yoshi’s side. In a blink of an eye she flickered away. The afterimage of her body left behind for a mere second until it vanished. Verdandi had used a round 45 m/s movement speed that escaped the perception of anyone that didn’t at least have S-Ranked perception. Verd had a passive speed booster imbued into her gear that allowed her to moved far beyond her own rank. But in situations like this. It was a necessary ability to have. Considering that the boy with the sand had just basically knocked out his opponent and was now sending a large spike of sand to impale the unconscious target. The crowd was taken back and shocked at the brutal killing intent of the sand-nin. But with the blink of an eye, Verdandi had appeared on the battlefield.

The very spike of the sand gripped in her palm as a seemingly A-Rank level defensive frost armor was covering her fist. The ice from Verdandi’s palm slowly exhaled over the whole sand pillar that the young boy had created and with a simple squeeze of her hand the spike would shatter to pieces. The young bloodthirsty boy’s killing intent had been destroyed by the very moment his strongest move had been laid to ashes in but a mere breath of a second. Verdandi made sure to exhale her cold aura towards him to only dare him to make a stupid move now and he’d be sent flying out of this stadium to fully be made aware what regret feels like. But his bloodthirst had been crushed. Verdandi’s move had surprised him enough to back down. The proctor would ring the signal to end the match and announce the sand-nin the winner of this one, while mentioning on speaker, that if he dared to attack a defenseless opponent again, he’d be disqualified from the entire tournament. Everyone gets a second chance. He now had time to figure out if he was going to mess it up or not. Verd however, was just doing her job. The medical-nin would rush in to look after the loser. Seemingly he was quite fine. Probably just snapped out of it after the last hit for a few seconds. And hence. Verdandi simply blinked back to where she had been, next to Yoshi. She smiled down at her little cousin, knowing him to enjoy a good show off. She grits her teeth widely. “Now how was that huh? Not bad right? I bet you liked that.”

Maybe the hug was a little too much…

Verdandi didn’t seem to reciprocate Yoshito’s affection but then again she may not have been through what he had. He wasn’t born in Kirigakure, he was taken in by them after his mother got a mundane job, kicked out of his own village for reasons unknown to him. His mother and father didn’t tell him what they had done for that punishment, they were hunted down for whatever it was. Yoshito’s mother was a hunter ninja herself from Takigakure so she knew their strategies on how to catch her family and his father was a master in stealth arts so they had the advantage in running from the hunter squads that may have been sent after them. He could remember hunting for food when they didn’t have a place set up in a minor village, setting up traps for random wildlife that could be running about for dinner. Their stays in these minor villages or just small camps never lasted long, the Takigakure shinobi were on the family’s heels almost always and so when they showed their faces or when the people caught wind of who and why the three of them were there it wouldn’t be much longer until they were cast out yet again. His mind drifted off for only mere seconds before his big cousin spoke again. Her tone was a more serious one, allowing for some insight into how to think as he progressed and even helped him think about how to go about the rest of these Chunin Exams.

“Yeah you’re right Verdandi, I just need to do what I can to represent the Mist Village. As long as I bring honor to them, that’s all that matters right?” The words escaped his lips as he watched onto the match. The sandy boy knocked down the one with the chakra aura and suddenly it seemed that the tides of the fight had turned to the one with the sand. It was seemingly over, the crowd was roaring for the match to be over. But that was when the sandy boy suddenly looked full of rage. He ran at the one knocked down and out with ruthlessness. A spike contorted from his sandy sphere going toward the boy on the ground and he wasn’t reacting. Was he knocked out? Could he not react? Why was the sandy guy going after the kid when he can’t do anything about it? What a shameful act. “Verdandi!” Her name was all he could get out before she was off into the stadium’s main ground. Yoshi looked to where he was just before the sudden movement and she was gone, it was insane how fast she was. His eyes widened at the sight of her with the boy’s sandy spike in her hand, her hand itself is covered in a light blue aura seemingly in defense as to not take any damage. Other ninjas were soon on the field to help recover the boy who was knocked out but much later than Verdandi, her speed was insane. The roaring had stopped as the air in the arena became silent, one could hear mice running around underneath the bleachers if one could stomach such a thought. The fight had gotten intense but it was clear that it was over now.

Static aired over the arena and then a voice clearly came through signifying the end of the match, stating that the sand shinobi had won the match but if he chose to attack another helpless opponent again then he would be disqualified. As he should be. These matches weren’t meant to satisfy bloodlust, they were meant for entertainment and joining of the villages for a fun event that all genin could participate. But most of all, it was a way for the genin of each respective village to test their abilities to see how they would fit in their progressing ranks. Yoshito seemed disappointed at the sand shinobi who was more worried about blood than his own abilities. He couldn’t help but wonder how the Sand Village would deal with him when he returned to his village. Verdandi returned beside Yoshito shortly after her visit to the battlefield just as fast as she had taken off. Yoshi’s eyes hadn’t left the boy who was knocked out making sure he was okay before taking his eyes off the stadium. After he stood up seemingly fine, the boy turned to Verdandi who was now next to him with a smile wider than the great plains.

“That was crazy big cousin! You’re super fast. I need to get that fast for my techniques.” He said hyped for what had just happened. Even with all the thinking of the punishment, the Sand Shinobi would undoubtedly get when he returned, Verdandi’s actions were still not watered down whatsoever and his heart was racing as she returned. But quickly after his childish bravado, he lowered his head and looked back out to the arena. His thoughts returned to his battle with Makoto thinking about how it ended. Yoshito was aiming to slice his neck for the win and if the proctor hadn’t stepped in then the boy would most assuredly have been killed by his two-meter wind blades cutting his head clean off. Then he thought to the boy’s dog that he hit and injured. It was still something he had to live with for if it had been a fight outside of the stadium, that pup would be dead by now. Luckily, just like this match, medical nin were at the ready to rescue and keep his dog alive. "Hey, what kind of punishment would he receive had he hurt that kid, Verdandi?" He asked looking onto the arena where the contenders were leaving. He wondered because of the pup he had injured. It didn't even have any stakes within the battle, it was in Yoshi's field of sensory and he didn't know what it was but it wasn't protected so it took a shuriken to the neck and went down.

Verdandi glared back into the arena. Soon the next contesters would be up another series of matches would come through. But her eyes would eventually return to focus on todays pupil. His head seemed to be filled with a vast, if not endless amount of questions, desires and heartaches. Verd scratched herself behind her ear and wondered how to calm down the hyped boy. Probably showing off her high-end speed during the match intrusion wasn’t helping him have any less to be hyped about. She chuckled. He actually was kind of cute like that. She rather had over motivated and slightly pushy relatives than ones with no spirit or personality. The lazy ones that clearly showed their inability to desire for something or obtain a goal in their life’s were literally the ones she had the hardest time to deal with. Verd glanced back down as she could see how the master of the sand boy moved into the arena. A clean smack to the back of his head would be the primary visible punishment. Part of the crowd would giggle. None of this had been actually very dangerous. Even the bloodthirst, while existed and could have harmed the opponent, was something that was not unseen during these types of matches. Many contestants injure themselves rather greatly by pushing themselves far past their natural limits. All under the pressure of being watched and judged. The exclamation of him doing it for the pride of Kiri was also, not necessary.

“He will be scolded by his own kin. It is not upon the jury to judge the shinobi of other countries. But the management greatly depends on the village holding the exams. I heard that the one Kumo was a rather bloody festival with many dead Genin in the process. Konoha is probably less crazy about seeing children die and so far none has really lost their lives during a match. But many have been massively wounded. Some most likely will not continue their path as ninja. But this alas, is while sad, also a purpose of the exams. Those who clearly do not fit this line of work will be sorted out and forcefully returned to a more peaceful life beneath normal humans or be forced to work as aids at the academy to instruct and help guide young aspiring shinobi for a better luck on their path. It is basically impossible to kill someone during an exam in Konoha. The rules I have been made familiar with were clear. Any lethal force that would kill either of the participants or any force against an already lost case, like this one, will be aborted and prevented by us proctors. Considering the major power gap between the Jōnin proctors and the Genin, at best Chuunin powered contestants shouldn’t give any of the ones fighting the chance to actually kill their opponent. Also, we always have very skilled medics here. Technically, for someone to die during the exams here, the Jōnin must be asleep, the medics gotten in an accident and the aggressor must be insanely strong.”

Verdandi would leave out the parts where the proctors in Kumogakure did ignore such situations on purpose to intently watch the Genin kill each other. It was a bad memory. Just one of many reasons why Verdandi disliked the Raikage and all his preaching’s. He might be a reasonable politician, but he was a heartless man with a major god complex. Konoha was certainly on the milder side of things. Kiri would be in turn to hold the exams next year. Verd would most likely be part of the organizational staff. So she was looking forward to go by the leaf’s example and make sure the exams in Kiri would be as calm and peaceful as the ones in Konoha would hopefully remain till the very end. Verdandi smiled and gave Yoshi a little slap to the shoulder. It was time to get moving. Another few shorter and unspectacular matches would go on. Verdandi would take the time to move down from the viewers lodge into the arena, standing outside the battlefield while Yoshi would have to remain by her side. Most of the matches were already over and so the final rounds of todays contestants was soon to be up. Maybe three or for left to take care of. Verdandi would give Yoshi the chance to babble about himself as a person for a while. She was always open ears if a relative had sorrows and worries to share.

“Alright. You have watched a good dozen fights now. You have seen how they generally work out. I will take care of the creepy movements. But I want you to see this next match and tell me what is going to happen. Watch the contestants, try to determine their abilities. Watch them fight with their tools and jutsu and tell me what you think their personalities are like. If they are aggressive, passive, unpredictable etc. Tell me which one you think is in favor of winning the match. Tell me which one of them is more tactic and which one is straighter forward. These are all things you have to see as a proctor and predict what is going to happen before it happens. This way you can minimize the actual harm that could be dealt by an unreasonable attack such as the one we saw before. Also, just tell me what you see and think, don’t rush on the battlefield. That’s my job.”

Verdandi would watch as two contestants entered. A rather large and bulky one with Kumo headband and a clearly doton aligned combat set and a smaller but probably quicker opponent with an Iwa headband that more likely relied on his bloodline that was yet to be seen. Verdandi would of course remain attentive in order to make sure that Yoshi trying to test-call the match would not go wrong and that she could always move in still if the fight would get out of hand.

I heard that the one Kumo was a rather bloody festival with many dead Genin in the process.

Her voice pierced Yoshito’s ears as he listened intently. Every word she said had meaning to it, even if the young boy didn’t understand completely everything she did say, that one sentence stood out in his mind. Dead Genin? How could one allow such a thing? These exams, for the most part, were meant to be for entertainment and testing the abilities of the contestants not to put them up to their deaths should they disgrace the shinobi way. Yoshi looked disgusted as he was leaning over the rail held up by his forearms atop the railing. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard. Remembering for only a moment when the Sand Shinobi’s sensei came out and humiliated him with a smack on the back of the head in front of everyone, that seemed like punishment enough. He couldn’t imagine the darkness inside the Cloud Village’s hearts that would allow death to befall on their shinobi should they lose their match. Shinobi business was a cut throat one indeed, but if they lose and cannot learn from their mistakes how could they improve should the next fight be for the village? Yoshi shook his head at these thoughts echoing in his mind.

He was lost in thought when his big cousin would give him a playful slap on the shoulder, Yoshito flinched at the feeling. It brought him from the confines of his thoughts back to reality quickly. The boy didn’t want to seem like what she had said bothered him and so without even a thought the boy would return Verdandi’s smile without realizing that she showed one as well. The boy followed his big cousin to just outside the battlefield with the intent to watch the next match. With every step, however, he couldn’t help but to think of his mother who had not made it to the exams to watch her son perform. He won his first round of battle and yet she was nowhere to be found within the borders of the Leaf Village. It saddened the boy slightly that she nor his father showed. “... Maybe they didn’t show up because Takigakure is so close to Konohagakure…” Yoshito would say as they made it to their destination. Clearly, Verdandi would have no clue as to what he was referring and so she might just shrug off the off-track comment the young boy made. When Verdandi stopped her movement so did Yoshi, leaning his body on a wall closest to him with one hand in his pocket and another lazily laying on his side as his eyes scanned the arena that the next two contestants would be duking it out on.

If they showed up and were spotted by the Waterfall Shinobi they would try and arrest them on the spot. That would cause a scene for sure taking attention away from the exams themselves. That must be why they didn’t show. Why else wouldn’t they come to see their only son in his first chunin exams? Yea, that’s it… isn’t it?

Lost in thought again Verdandi’s words jolted him back to reality. He wasn’t paying attention to the mission at hand sadly the boy was worried about his own selfishness about why his parents hadn’t shown to watch him perform and that just wasn’t important at the time. Yoshi cleared his throat listening to his big cousin ask him to make predictions on the upcoming match. See their patterns in movements, mannerisms and things like that to discern their personality and how the match would end up after all is said and done. It was no easy task for such a young boy to call out for certain but as she instructed, he would give it a shot. He watched as both of the shinobi made their way into the arena and faced one another, the boy sized them up compared to each other and scanned their body language as they walked up. One was a larger male bearing the Cloud Village symbol on his headband and the other was a rather thin fellow with the Stone Village etched into his own headband. The Kumo ninja walked with confidence and glared at his opponent as he walked forward. He noted that he had a large blade sheathed on his back.

“I think the Kumo nin is an aggro kinda guy. He walks with confidence and you see the way he stares at his opponent? Makes me think he’s gonna be the first one to move offensively here, either heavy taijutsu and kenjutsu mix or focusing on some sort of heavy element like Earth. Yeah, that seems right.”

Then Yoshi glanced at the other shinobi with the Stone Village on his headband. This one walked lazily toward his opponent and even took a stance after stopping in front of his opponent but not one that looked familiar to Yoshito. He hadn’t been in a lot of fights but if his stance was memorable for some reason he would at least know a reference to it. Could it be a Iwagakure exclusive stance? This boy didn’t have any visible weapons on his person, yet could definitely have it hidden with some sort of fuinjutsu. Yoshito noticed that he had some sort of marking on his right arm, another unfamiliar thing about this kid. He couldn’t make out the symbols on it correctly without assuming so he wouldn’t take the chance of being wrong and just give his opinion about him given what he’s seen from him so far.

“The one from Iwagakure… Hm, his rather slender body type makes me think he’s not used to battle yet. I could see him being a quicker character, focusing on a lighter element like Air or Water. He seems to be the most diverse possible person in this match. You see those markings? I wonder what those are all about.” The boy would pause for a moment to think about the possible scenarios on how this could play out. The Stone village shinobi could take the win simply by tiring out the bigger one, playing around the fact that he is much faster than him or fight smarter. It was a toss up really, but he would make his guess based on those thoughts. “I see the Kumo genin winning this match big cousin.”

Verdandi’s empathy was calling to her, the ability to sense the emotional disturbances around her was a trait she had adapted since childhood. What used to force the princess into solitude and introvertism was a useful tool at hand to keep track of Verd’s closer surroundings and emotional health of her team, family and subordinates. She kept silent while the emotional turmoil would rummage in Yoshi’s belly and watch him trying to deal with it. Going straight forward to simply remove the burden from him came to her mind but Verdandi was one that preferred to see her pupils find their own solution to what is gnawing on them. Being able to deal with emotional distress was an important part of being a shinobi, the battlefield itself had little means of comfort and holds a gruesome multitude of potential influencers that can negatively affect one’s psyche. She had seen many shinobi of weaker mindset break under the pressure of war and lose themselves, becoming broken, a mere shadow of their former powerful self and in need for intensive care over long periods of time in order to regain a part of their healthy normal self again. Removing the emotional distress from Yoshi might be a kind thing to do, but it’d make him grow dependent on people like Verdandi, only increasing his emotional attachments and hereby make him far more vulnerable when said attachments would be taken away from him. By all means, Verdandi could have desired to act as a big sister in this situation, but her own mortality reminded her that creating to deep attachments as mere solutions for turmoil is going to cause this child to find solace in the wrong places.

For now, she’d observe, watch him do his thing and deal with his initial turmoil, then shake it off once he noticed how much it was distracting him, proceeding eventually to the task at hand. Verd smiled. Good, able to push it aside for now while more important things come first. A higher level of priority and concentration is something that he still had to learn. But who said that Genin had to be perfect from the get-go. Verd watched Yoshi extend his knowledge over the battlefield. He cleanly depicted the persona of the heavy character. His idea was on-spot. Once the combat began the Kumo-nin would charge in as Yoshi predicted. His giant fist quickly aiming for that frail body of the Iwa-nin. The smaller and quicker ninja seemed yet able to avoid all primary attacks. As eventually the Kumo-nin started to use his doton to lay traps in the ground, basically create a maze for the Iwa-nin to cunningly remove more and more options to evade. Until at last he managed to trap the Iwa’s feet with his own earth element. Rushing in and landing a blow right to the belly, sending the kid flying backwards. Verd could see the glow in Yoshi’s eyes as it seemed like his predictions came true. That he was right all along.

But Verdandi was left to smirk. The situation couldn’t have been more perfect. She wanted this to be a lesson for Yoshi. Not necessarily in a mean way. Not even to tell him that he was wrong, but simply for the very reason that he has to be more careful about his predictions as in certain situations or moments like this, he would find himself in such a battle and greatly underestimate his foe while he should have known better. From experience. The one thing Genin massively had a lack of. Experience. But that was what they were here for now and that was the very reason he had been assigned to this mission to learn from Verdandi. She’d keep silent for a moment, the crowd cheered. The Kumo-nin was already swinging his giant fists above his head while his opponent remained seemingly defeated, planted against the wall with a rather nasty bruise on his chest. Probably a primary fracture of the ribs. Nothing broken yet. But still a type of damage that could easily end a battle between Genin. But in the blink of an eye. The whole battlefield turned upside down. The Iwa-nin moved his palms, hand seals were completed. The reason he had not fully shown any ninjutsu as of yet was, that he had already used them long into the battle without the Kumo-nin even realizing it. Every little bit of earth surrounding the Kumo-nin. Every piece of the maze. Every little hill he had shaped with his doton. Verdandi’s Sharingan could see it. They were charged. Marked. Stolen. The hand seals came clashing down and the whole arena exploded in a mere second.

“Your prediction was perfect. But you lacked the experience to know what the symbol on the Iwa-nin represents. He is an Otsuka. They don’t always have to be physically strong fighters. Otsuka are gifted with one of the most devastating abilities in the whole shinobi world. Bokuton. Explosion Release. The moment you keep pushing all you have against your opponent and he doesn’t fight back despite seemingly being supposedly equal in strength to you, you should realize that something is wrong. That you are missing something. That ninja fight with trickery and deceit. That something bad is coming for you and if you only put your attention aside for a minute before the battle is really over. They will have you. The Otsuka placed his Bokuton charges all over the battlefield. The charging process takes time, which is why he seemingly did not attack at all. But once charged, Bokuton has a very nasty damage output and often large area effects to their techniques. And so, the very person who was powerful and mighty has lost due to his own idea of how much stronger he depicted himself to be. The shinobi world is far from the logic of a casual hand to hand combat decision. When your opponent looks as frail as paper while is supposedly in your power level, be afraid little cousin. Cause it means he has something incredibly mean up his sleeve to close that gap that his weak body seems to give away.”

Yoshi’s eyes stared upon the battlefield. The contestants were soon to start their battle. A proctor was in the middle of the field just between the Iwa and Kumo ninja with one arm extended high into the air. A gust of wind breezed through the area offering a crisp cool feeling on Yoshito’s skin. Suddenly the proctor’s arm dropped signifying the beginning of the battle. The Kumo nin wasted no time rushing at the Iwa ninja, the young boy’s predictions were correct. The Kumo nin rushing forward making the first offensive move was just as Yoshi thought would happen. It was the way he walked and the way he looked at his opponent brought Yoshi’s thoughts to that conclusion and he was correct. It felt good to be right in front of someone who was a higher ranking shinobi. Obviously Verdandi could have predicted these things to happen just as Yoshi did but it felt good knowing that he might have passed her expectations with his correct predictions. Yoshi’s eyes lit up as he watched the battle go on, it reminded him of his battle with Makoto. The crowd roared with every swing, gasping at the dodging the Iwa shinobi dodged utilizing his slender frame against his opponent. “Yes, yes!” Two words escaped Yoshi’s lips as he stared on the battle. He was paying attention to the battle, the thrill of the fight had pumped his blood and adrenaline was coursing through his veins. The boy was excited.

It looked as if the Kumo ninja had the battle on his side the whole time, the Iwa nin was on his heels retreating with every missed strike making Yoshi’s prediction even more probable that the Kumo shinobi would take this victory for his country. But then he remembered what Verdandi said, the Kumo shinobi often allowed the deaths of the genin that participated. Yoshito’s brow furrowed at the thought, wondering what lengths exactly the Kumo ninja would go to to win the match. It was a scary thought. Suddenly, as the Iwa ninja went for a dodge he could feel his feet encased in the earth. Yoshito hadn’t noticed it but the Kumo ninja was tired of hitting the air and was using his earthen element to lay traps across the battlefield as he moved across it and finally caught the Iwa ninja. Yoshi’s eyes squinted watching as the Kumo shinobi rushed forward once more and this time with his clenched fist leading his onslaught onto the Iwagakure ninja’s stomach. The Iwa ninja was sent backward tens of meters flipping as his body landed on the ground. It was quite a hit, undoubtedly breaking ribs with the size of the Kumo ninja’s fists and his apparent strength. He watched as the Kumo ninja lunged forward with his arm reared back ready to extend, fist clenched for the final blow. Yoshito looked toward Verdandi wondering what she was going to do, why not try to stop the match? This shinobi was going to kill the Iwa shinobi. Suddenly, the battlefield was different. The crowd hushed all at once. Yoshito’s eyes widened.

BOOOOOOOM

The flash of red and white light subsided as particles of the earth rained down after the rumbling thunderous sound of the explosion. Clouds of destruction that consumed the arena moved aside as Verdandi spoke, there wasn’t much that Yoshito could do to stop the violence that had just happened. It all went down so quickly. “The Otsuka, wow. What power.” Yoshito’s eyes scanned the field as the Kumo ninja laid down on the ground defeated. The battle took an unexpected turn that his prediction hadn’t caught, it was nowhere in his mind that the Iwa ninja was of the Otsuka family let alone helt the power of Explosion Release. It was truly a sight to behold. The Iwa ninja’s body leaned on the wall of the arena panting with every breath seemingly trying to get control of his breathing. It was clear who the winner was even with the kid’s body being almost broken from the physical abuse he took. The proctor appeared seemingly out of nowhere but nowhere near as fast as Verdandi was. He proclaimed that the Iwa ninja was the victor as two teams of medical shinobi carried off both shinobi to get their injuries tended to. Yoshito’s mouth was still agape after saying what he said staring into the destruction that the arena endured. The once calm and still earth became littered with holes, or even a better description, craters as a result from the Iwa shinobi’s explosive powers.

“That was some trick up his sleeve big cousin. That explosive release is really something.” Yoshito said remarking on the fact that he had the Otsuka blood coursing through his veins. Yoshito noted in his mind the markings that he didn’t realize the true meaning behind as they marked the shinobi for the Otsuka clan. It was clear that Yoshi had a long way to go from his current level of knowledge. Verdandi seemed to know everything there is to know about the shinobi world. This clan seemingly came from the Stone Village yet Verdie knew what it was all about even something as obscure as the markings on his arms. It was a strange thing to think that his big cousin knew seemingly all there is to know.

Verdandi laughed. The situation had been too perfect. Her pupil had made very well observations but missed a critical detail. All in all a perfect lesson for the young cousin, to remember that lowering your guard is never ok in battle. Even in the final climax of combat. Never be too sure of your victory. Perceptions might deceive you sometimes. Also, the situation left Verd in a seemingly all-knowing super smart position. That she had simply fought alongside and Otsuka during the Suna Reclamation was a detail she didn’t have to exhale into this moment. As well as the fact that she was just as surprised as Yoshi was now after having seen the vast brutal damage capabilities of the explosion element for the first time. Details. She chuckled to herself and enjoyed the moment of being seen as this wise sage of wisdom. Eventually she’d pat her little cousin on the head and smile.

“You did well to predict the persona of the Kumo-nin, but be aware of that the village affiliation alone is no certain hint towards a person’s character. Foreigners see Kiri-nin not rarely as descendants of the bloody mist, monsters that thirst for combat and kill without mercy. The leaf is known for their deceiving gentle smile as they stab you in the back. Iwa for their weak leadership and the continuous fall of their ranks. Sunaan people for their unusual fetish with puppets and sand. Yet you will meet gentle Kiri-nin, honorable Kumo-nin, merciless and evil Leaf-nin, strong and powerful Iwa-nin and Suna-nin that rely on nothing but Taijutsu and fire. Our world is full of cliché that can be helpful in our predictions, but they should never cloud your mind from being open towards the truth that yet has to be revealed for you. Cherish how our world is full of surprises.”

With the Genin being escorted to their respective medical wards and the Medics getting right on it Verd had no need to step-in. Her Sharingan was well capable of seeing through the blast cloud and getting a basic picture of the situation long before the dust had moved to reveal the actual outcome. She was heavily relying on that unusual eye of hers. Not unlike many others before her. The Uchiha even used to be a hunted species for some years as the prices on the market for Sharingan enhanced eyes had reached inhuman levels. While Verd had purchased her own in a rather unspectacular fashion it was yet not linked to those dark times of long-lost past. The Yuki Clan had sort of a history with the Uchiha, specifically due to the way Hao Uchiha was the very person that burned down the land of snow… and Kirigakure as well. The snow people have been obsessed with the abilities that brought their destruction ever since. To eventually get a hold over one of these eyes was more an act of curiosity and experimental desire than anything else. Verdandi had been blind in an eye due to injury and fate had it that her clan had access to such a rather unique piece of organic equipment.

She now could see through many otherwise obscuring situations. As long it wasn’t filled with chakra, walls and gases didn’t stop her eyesight anymore. But Verdandi had made her own experiments with her eye. The invisible body seal on her Sharingan, a product of her most gifted skills in sealing techniques. It enhanced her vision. Allowed her to see elements. Chakra pool sizes and far more. She grinned at the beautiful cyan glow of Joker’s own chakra flame. Very much alike Verdandi’s. But as the match was over, her eye would once again return to slumber. The very fuin seal that could enhance the eye would also put it back to sleep and make it look like a completely normal eye in disguise again. Verd smirked. But she was getting tired. It had been a long day. The last match was coming up any minute now. One last chance for Verdandi to give her young pupil another lesson. She wondered what the opponents would be about. Thinking about the Sharingan… maybe an Uchiha? There were plenty of them around here during the exams. Or maybe a Senju. Verd loved the Mokuton users. They had such a pretty element it was driving her crazy one way or another already. To give life with your mere element was like a dream come true for them. Her envy was vivid.

“Alright, let’s see who’s up next for the final match of today. Same game as before. You look at them and tell me what you think. What their characters are like and whom you think will have the upper hand.”

With that said. Verd would watch a doton using proctor shortly clear up the battlefield, remove the boom craters and the obstacles. Cleaning the whole stadium in a mere few minutes despite the apparent damage that had been given to the surroundings. Once the next set of contestants walked in. They would be provided with eye candy at the cutest level. Two girls entered the arena. One from sunaan background given the tanned skin. One from the leaf. Both most likely users of a bloodline limit. But which one? Suna and Konoha both had tons of hidden abilities within their genes. But the gorgeous sunaan had a shine in her eyes Verd was also familiar with. Having fought against her kin in a battle that almost killed Verdandi. A Karisuma. Their bloodline limit, the eyes of beauty was probably one of the most fearsome doujutsu in existence. Potentially even more powerful than the Sharingan. But at Genin she most likely only possessed the most infant stage of the bloodline limit. Still, a fearsome tool to have in battle. It was yet to be seen which bloodline the leaf-girl possessed. Did she have anything to measure up against the brutal hypnotic powers of the sunaan’s eyes of beauty?

Verdandi laughed while in the presence of Yoshito at his side after the match was over. The dust was still amidst the air obscuring most anyone’s vision trying to pierce into the arena to see what exactly was happening. Yoshi looked to his big cousin and noticed that one of her eyes were red with three tomoes. It startled the boy and it jerked his attention back to the dusty arena. He had never seen a Sharingan let alone one that didn’t belong to someone and so he didn’t know how to react. He allowed his young mind to control his actions as he tried to ignore it but he just couldn’t. He didn’t exactly ignore what Verdandi was saying but he couldn’t fully pay all his attention to it. Yoshi wanted to ask about the eye that was glowing red on her face but decided to wait for another opportunity, they were here to teach Yoshito lessons, not to wonder about things like that. He listened to Verdandi’s speaking about each villages’ ways of shinobism. She explained the stereotypical ways of each village. How the Leaf is known for being the Smiling Assassin and even some people seeing Mist shinobi as descendants of the Bloody Mist which couldn’t be farther from the truth based on the people he’s met so far. Sure they are powerful but as a shinobi they are trusted to defend against even stronger opponents so they have to be strong.

He sat there and pondered for a moment on what she had said. People are so racist, judging people based on their past and where they’re from. It isn’t a good trait for anyone to have but he could see where she was coming from in her way of thinking. And if it worked for preparing for battle then why not think that way? He scratched at his chin for a moment watching as a separate proctor appeared on the battlefield to fix the arena’s ground that had been destroyed only moments before. With every step and weaving a couple hand signs he formed the earth at his will and Yoshi couldn’t help but think he was using the Earth Element to fix the devastating blows that the ground took in the last match. This only made Yoshi think that another battle would be underway soon enough. Yoshito leaned forward where he was next to Verdandi looking at the battlefield as the proctor left the area. It was a beautiful sight, ninjutsu was a most powerful thing and beautiful if put to good use like this man was going. He couldn’t help but think of all the good that ninjutsu could be used for when one put their mind to it. One could fix entire villages if they so chose to with the mere usage of chakra they were all born with.

“Cherish how the world is full of surprises.” He spoke as if he was mimicking his older cousin, repeating it in hopes to never forget it, it just might save his life one day along with other lives. He watched as two girls entered the arena, one with tanned skin with beautiful blond hair, her curves caught Yoshito’s attention on sight much faster than the other female. She walked with such confidence, swag with every step would take Yoshi’s breath away as his eyes widened. He didn’t know why she took his attention but he didn’t mind it either. He hadn’t met a female romantically yet this girl was all that and a whole bag of chips when it came to that sort of thing. Yoshi’s mouth was agape when he realized he had to examine the other shinobi female as well. She was from the village they were in currently, the Leaf Village, her darkened brown hair shone with the sunlight. She was thick in body weight in a good way, yet no discernable abilities by eyesight alone. This one would be a tough match to call based on looks alone. Two females with the only visible advantage being that they were natural beauties and that wouldn’t help either of them being from the same sex. Taboo things such as same-gender love is an unknown and foreign concept to the young boy as he hadn’t even found his own love interest and didn’t know that it was a thing just yet.

“Verdie this one’s a tough one to call but I’m going with the cute blond one from Sunagakure.” He said with a slight smirk on his face, he couldn’t help it. He was a young man and this girl trapped his mind in a lewd dungeon. Things he never thought of before suddenly came flooding into his brain, he was lust struck by this female he had never met nor even had the privilege to talk to. Why was he acting this way? He was growing up that’s for sure. Hopefully, he could grow up with that girl in the arena. I guess he found his type. “But in all seriousness, they are both slender, taking care of their bodies physically showing no real prowess on visible looks alone. I’m not sure who will take this one.” He stopped his voice from being so childish to a more serious tone, leaning forward looking at the battle that was soon to begin.

Verdandi had to agree that this battle would be a rather though nut to call out on over whom is going to win this. She casually scratched her chin not unlike Yoshi did earlier so and kept her Sharingan running throughout the whole battle in order to try and peek into their personal abilities over molding chakra and being able to react at seconds notice to what the other opponent was doing. The battle seemed to go pretty equally for a rather large time. They clashed with hand to hand combat. The leaf-nin was quickly captured by the effects of the Karisuma’s eye technique. But as expected the Genin Karisuma was not really able to do much more than slow her opponent a little down with the current tier and stage of her own bloodline in effect. Their eyes would become deadly at higher ranks and were yet to be seen to be of any specific danger to the leaf girl. Both seemed to work at each other rather well with their fists. Once again, a reminder that being female in the ninja world did not hinder either of them fight on par if not above the skill level of the male contestants that had been seen before. The passive enhancements that chakra control could give a ninja that enhances their physical attributes was indeed a wonderful sight to behold. Verd glared at how the first captures the attention of the people in the arena by their looks and now their beautiful way of combat.

It was art in its most refined form. Kunai would clash. Shuriken would fly. Senbons would be tossed at each other. Both of them taking hits and getting moderately wounded. Neither of them flinched or started to whine like a fool or coward would. No one in this arena would be able to call them out, neither for their gender nor for their abilities with the ninja tools. But hand to hand combat and tool fighting would eventually exhaust itself and the two girls would be forced to start using their ninjutsu. The Karisuma surprised with the use of Genjutsu, trying to lull her opponent into a fake surrounding and sending false images of her own position into her mind. The leaf girl would take multiple hits before she figured it out and was able to Kai herself out of the illusions. The Karisuma seemed at advantage but once again, the other girl had yet to show her secret weapon. And here it came. Cornered and obviously feeling desperate over the potential incoming loss. The leaf girl unleashed a fire technique that had yet not been seen in the exams. At least not by Verdandi. Infusing fire with wind at a molecular level. It was a beautiful thing to observe with the Sharingan. Shakuton. Scorch Release. Next to dust and explosion one of the most potent elements in the world. Would it go the same way as before? Would the surprising use of a powerful element once again claim the victory of battle?

As ice users, both Verd and Yoshi would most likely have liked it to see the superior power of the advanced element best the doujutsu user. But while the Karisuma was taking heavy damage from the scalding fire surrounding her and intruding her skin, she was not yet done. The marks of burns were covering the suna-nin and a lot of the viewers were having deep concerns about the beautiful lady being hurt like that. But her counter would be just as devastating. Just as the second scorch ball was incoming and possibly going to end the match, the Karisuma punched into the ground and raised earth element to surround her whole body like an armor. Scorch was weak against the defensive properties of earth and could not get the second shot through. A third jutsu, fourth and fifth were fired at the Karisuma but mud walls were raised, earth pillars grown and neither of the scotch techniques had any chance to pass through the superior element at seemingly same rank. But whilst the scorch element was insanely potent in power, it had many drawbacks as well. Chakra costs of scorch ninjutsu were insanely high and the dehydration that came adhere with using the techniques was slowly sapping on the leaf girls endurance. At last, another Genjutsu illusion would make the Karisuma seemingly disappear for a moment from the leaf-nin’s eyes. The poor Sumiko girl would find herself with the Karisuma’s fist in her stomach and at last, sinking to her knees exhausted from loss of chakra, power and hydration.

She would raise her palm. Forfeit. Admitting her defeat before the Karisuma would be forced to deal any further damage. These suna-nin were well known for their deep arrogance that came along with their unnatural beauty. But once again, clichés didn’t always fit the bill. The Karisuma would quickly abort her next attack. Wait for the arena’s signal that the match is over. Before she would smile and bow deeply before her opponent. Admitting that it was a though and good fight. Reaching her hand out to help the girl up and under the loud and excited echo of completely amazed arena viewers, both of them would lift their palms side by side, taking in the admiration of all those who were viewing, for beautiful display of combat and fair play. Verdandi smiled. She could see that Yoshi was heads over tails falling in love and was probably not sure into which one of the beauties. Verd couldn’t blame him. She could appreciate their aesthetic display as well and blushed for herself. A wonderful end to a tiring day.

“Hmm that was indeed tricky to foresee. Many surprised happened in such a short time. This time the elemental advantage of the Karisuma bought her the cutting edge to gain the victory. Not her bloodline. Not the weakness of her opponent who was just as strong as herself. But the simple laws of nature.”

Yoshito Yuki | Joker of the Mist

The battle would soon be underway, the proctor that once stood in between these two girls left his spot after throwing his arms down. Yoshito’s eyes darted across the two females staring each other down, it was a much more lax approach to the fight compared to the previous matches. Then suddenly, a flash of movement from both contenders at the same time started the battle. Punches and kicks met with same reactions put the two pretty close together, almost matching each other physically to perfection almost as if they could see each other’s movements before they even happened. It was sort of a spectacle to witness, these two were proficient in close quarter combat it seemed. A few punches connected to each of their faces respectively and with each successfully mark the crowd would either gasp or chant on their hopeful winners. It was one hell of a fight indeed so far and they haven’t even really put chakra to use yet, or if they have, Yoshito wouldn’t be the one to notice. Then the girl from the Leaf caught the girl from the Sand, she had her wrist clenched with her open palm and that’s when a puff of smoke would appear where she was. The one from the Sand appeared behind her previous location about six meters from that area and through the puff of smoke a kunai would be launched through at her opponent which would be met with a clank of her own kunai. The match was intense and suspenseful, who would win this battle of the beauties?

The Leaf shinobi threw her kunai in return to the Sand shinobi to which she dodged with ease by utilizing a backflip, the kunai would fly past her body one atop her and the other just underneath her back. The weapons whizzed by her and with the quickness, the Leaf shinobi dashed to the Sand shinobi faster than Yoshito could totally make out. She’s fast. Yoshito nodded at his thought and the taijutsu battle would begin again. She took her opponent’s fancy dodge to her own advantage, her being in the air would make it difficult to dodge much and so when she appeared beside the Sand Shinobi an elbow would come down on her stomach slamming her into the ground. Yoshi’s eyes widened at the sight of this match becoming even more crazy that it had before. The Sand shinobi took the elbow as her back slammed into the earth. She didn’t take this time to be hurt, she knew what she was fighting for. She utilized the bounce of her body recoiling from the ground to throw up a counter attack, kicking the Leaf Shinobi in the chin knocking her back slightly. She stumbled backward a bit and the Sand Shinobi stood up with her hand on her stomach. They both seemingly took a break panting taking this second to catch their breath.

Now the ninjutsu came, the Leaf Shinobi jumped backward after catching her breath not skipping a beat. The Sand Shinobi was quickly after her catching up with ease. It seemed that the Leaf Shinobi was caught in an illusion, defending herself from opposite directions as the Sand Shinobi was hitting her body. But the Leaf girl wouldn’t fall for this for long, her hands melded together after straightening her mind creating a ball of flames, the air around the ball would distort due to the heat like one could see the sun’s head hitting concrete from afar. There wasn’t time for the Sand Shinobi to react to this due to her closeness to her opponent, her body was hit by the flames marking up her body like a scarred meat slab after cooking. The battle would probably be over with that hit should the Sand Shinobi be a quitter, but she was resilient. The crowd gasped all taking in air at the same time creating a noise louder than they had presented so far during the match. Yoshito did the same in response to what had just happened. The Leaf shinobi wasn’t done with her onslaught. Another ball of flames were created, then another and another until five were created, all flaming balls of heat created around her body. “It’s over.” She shot the balls at the Sand Shinobi and even through all the pain of the burns she managed to slam her fist on the earth erecting it, forming around her body to act as a shield against the flames. Yoshito expected the earth element to melt on contact but just the opposite happened, the earth had taken an advantage.

Must be something different about those flames or her earth element.

Suddenly after blocking the Leaf Shinobi’s assaulting flames she was caught in another illusion. Yoshito had recognized the signs from before, reduced to using the same technique twice in the same match would usually bring forth the same results but alas, this time around the Sand Shinobi was up in her opponent’s face with a fist deep in her stomach. The Leaf Shinobi’s body folded over the Sand Shinobi’s forearm with the force of the punch. It was a crazy ending, forcing Yoshito to recognize Sunagakure’s shinobis as a force to be reckoned with. The boy nodded as the Leaf Shinobi raised her hand forfeiting the rest of her match. What a tragedy for her. The Sand Shinobi simply stepped back, smiled, and nodded at her opponent in recognition of her prowess no doubt. Yoshi followed the crowds applauding at the display the two contenders showed for the entertainment of others. He clapped loudly and even mimicked the crowds hooting and hollering getting caught in the moment a little too much, quickly stopping when his big cousin spoke to summarize the match

“Yea, that was intense, I swear I was gonna say the Sand Shinobi was gonna win that one though.” Yoshito said jokingly, jesting jabbing his big cousin with his elbow slightly. In truth, the boy hadn’t called a winner and if he did, he could most likely get it wrong again just like before.

Verdandi smiled and kept her gaze upon the mix of amazement by the crowd, Yoshi included and the happiness of the participants despite one’s loss. The two girls had left and the crowd started to disappear seeing as todays last match in this arena had been fought out. Dandi would take Yoshi with her as she helped the proctors shortly clean up the arena, getting some of the throwing items like kunai and shuriken settled and collected while as well helping the proctors reduce the arena playground to its neutral state again. The doton and Mokuton users the leaf had at hand were certainly quicker and better at terraforming everything to zero, not unlike the doton user had removed the explosion and earth pillar damage earlier that day. But helping them with the little stuff would still make things faster for all of them and they gently bowed and thanked Verd and Yoshi for their support. Dandi would move to collect the mission voucher from the local admin of the arena and give one to Yoshi as well, with it they could claim their rewards later at the central administration center in Konoha. Verd usually piled them up until she was done in a certain area, often leading to her coming to collect large sums of Ryo when it was actually payout day. She chuckled and invited Yoshi to tag along for a little afterwork drink on a juice stand not far from the arena. Verd yawned and felt the exhausting of the day creeping up on her.

It certainly wasn’t the most difficult of missions that she had been on, but as so often it had been a pleasure to spend her time with a family member. Verd never grew bored despite the larger number of Yuki clansmen, they were all different and had their own tastes and personalities. Some of them were rather weird, some weak, some frail, some kind of crazy. Dandi couldn’t put her finger on any unusualness on Yoshi as of yet, despite being a rather hyped and motivated kin he seemed like an honest soul with a lot of love in his heart. Innocence was still claiming his mind and left him to pleasures many of the other Yuki have excluded themselves from, often cause of a darker past or because of memories that would haunt them already. The shinobi world was not exactly the nicest place to be in, ninja would often be confronted with disasters and death way before their mental age was actually ripe to understand and process these things properly. It seemed that Yoshi had either been spared the pain or was coping with it in a wonderfully sweet and innocent way. Verdandi was still the spoiled kid and up until Suna she had never been forced to face mental disasters such as the results of war. Seeing the battlefields in suna was indeed a life changing experience, but she had already been eighteen by that time and so she was properly able to mentally sort things out.

Verdandi’s past was of gentle and simple nature. She was not only spoiled but lucky in her surroundings. Always there were people looking out for her and people that would take care of the princess in troubled times. She was surrounded by family and by servants and friends. There was certainly no lack on social empowerment to her. But whilst she could feel the carefree ideology within Yoshi, she could also feel a certain emptiness when it came to that very social feeling that she was so spoiled with. Eventually she managed to find a certain relation towards the hug he had given her at their meeting point and Verdandi was not the kind to put a blind eye to her families needs if she could somehow help with a problem. Chit chat and small talk would continue between them as they slurped on their juices sponsored by the princess. Yoshi would exhale his funny joked and smiles and it would genuinely cheer up the princess. But alas, soon the time would come where the day was really reaching its end and Verd yawned once more as she was quite a famous sleepyhead to begin with.

“Here, take this emblem with you. It has the crest of our family on it. When you return to Kiri, find your way into the market street in the north west. Don’t be afraid of the seemingly highborn and fancy rich people that linger there. You will find the Yuki compound. Every person in that area that wears this emblem on their clothes is but a relative of yours. My own Kiri residence is there as well. Ask for me and you shall be given the directions. I can feel your disconnection to our clan, but while I cannot return you the proper embrace of our kin in your past, I can offer it for your future. Be aware, that our bloodline is but one of the largest families in existence. One that truly searches for family here, shall never be disappointed or rejected. You are part of us. Remember that.”

Verd would get up and give her cousin a last gentle hug, making it last so he could savor the warmth of their connection and feel it inside him that what she spoke was true and that he would always be welcome, never alone. There would always be a roof for him, food and even luxuries. All he had to was ask and with that in mind, Verdandi caressed her cousin’s cheek after the hug and eventually disappeared into the night, in but a little cloud of snowflakes left behind in her stead. Soon, they would meet again.

Yoshito Yuki | Joker of the Mist

The match was over, the victor respectfully bowed to her opponent winning with grace and the loser did the same. It was a respectable battle and so the honor given to each other was deserved and it made Yoshito nod at the sportsmanship the two displayed after the fact. The boy was very excited to see the battle among others that were shown in this arena for the sunny day. Roaring from the crowd died down slowly and the stampede of people would vibrate throughout the place as they stood from their seats looking for the exit. The stadium that was once booming with activity fell silent and the wind blowing would consume the air. Yoshi’s big cousin Verdandi left his side to help the proctors clean up the arena and put it back together. He wanted to help so he decided to follow but without the Earth Element he couldn’t to much in the ways of helping the others so it seemed like he was simply following around his big cousin like a sheep following the leader helping with the simple things like collecting the various ninja weapons scattered about on the ground. At the end of the task the boy would deposit the tools in a bin that a proctor was walking around with ensuring Yoshito that they would go to their rightful owners. To which, Yoshi simply nodded and bowed to the man before he left the area following his big cousin yet again.

Their end destination would be a cute quaint little juice bar that seemed to be slightly packed from the end of the battles of the day, everyone seemed to come here to end their day. Yoshito ordered his drink and sat down with Verdandi to enjoy the fruits of his labor with his big cousin, maybe go over the day and what he had learned to hopefully put the knowledge toward his next battle for the Chunin Exams. Just after he slurped his drink and just as he was about to thank Verdandi for her company and advice throughout the day she spoke. Her words flowed effortlessly through her lips inviting him to the Yuki clan compound. It was a warm invitation that Yoshito could do nothing with but to agree. There was no way he could ever refuse his big cousin when she offered such a nice thing like a place to stay when times are hard or people who would be a rock to lean on. He could feel his emotions swelling to the forefront but mostly full of pride more than anything else. He was happy to hear that the Yuki family was more than power, they were a true connection of loving and gentle people such as Yoshi and it couldn’t make him more happy to hear that they wanted Yoshi to feel welcome within their presence. Yoshi grabbed the emblem from Verdie, the chain dangling just below the silver emblem with the Yuki clan’s family crest etched into it in black ink. He put the necklace on, the silver chain felt cold on his skin on contact from Verdandi’s own frozen aura being much more than Yoshito’s could ever hope to be at his level as a shinobi.

“Thank you so much, Verdandi. This means much more to me than you know. . .”

Yoshito spoke one last time before they hugged and parted ways for the day. The sentence was truth filled as he thought about his mother and father’s inability to make an appearance to the Chunin Exams. He had felt an absence of family as of late ever since he entered the Mist Village due to his mother and father being so busy. It’s such a shame that he felt more normal on the run with his family than being safe and protected within a village but that’s what it is. Yoshito sat back down absolutely inhaling his big drink looking off into the distance as the sun drooped and dimmed the light on the scene. It was a good fucking day.
