The rocks slid between his fingertips as he gripped violently on to it and felt his feet dangling for a moment. The sudden surge of adrenaline as he pressed his fingertips as hard as he could for an instant before his other arm grabbed quickly to the nearest rock in desperate hopes to maintain his climb. He swallowed his breath as his head looked down, only another 20 meters up from the latest perch, the fall wouldn't kill him there but if he rolled, it was hundreds of more meters downward. His eyes would shudder before he would brace himself and turn his vision back upwards and gently but quickly slid his foot over the base to gain his step and begin climbing again. His mind wandered aimlessly back to those words he had overheard before from the civilian in that shop,

"It's insane! I heard from Shiji that it's a goddess who lives up there. He got mixed in with a bad crew and all but they had been looking to set up a camp in the mountains but ran into this Akuma. She beat them all easily, though he wouldn't give any details, it could have been as many as hundreds of guys..."

"Sounds like exaggeration"

"If you don't believe me then go ask him yourself! He said a single swing of the sword was enough to cut down hundreds of them. Controlling blue lightning like some kind of God!"

"Will you keep your voice down, this is nonsense. It was probably just some ANBU that got to them and scared the life out of them..."

"No! That's where you're wrong, they've been hiding as much as they can and have been using prayers and wards to fend off that demon. Apparently, it's been working?"

The other man would shake his head, "I think I'll have to say a prayer for you and the criminals you've been dealing with..."

Katsumi's hand would reach out and grab hold of a loose rock that would fall past him, breaking his concentration of the memory and how much closer to the next path he would be. Climbing to avoid the attention of most of the bandits that would be lingering near the base of the mountain and waiting for travellers. His stealthy approach all but beginning to tire himself out and threaten to break a bunch of bones from the fall.

With an outstretched hand, Katsumi would grab hold of the thin path that was carved out, finally able to pull himself up onto flat ground where he would feel comfortable having avoided most of the bandits. It had taken a while but sitting on the edge now and looking down, the trees that lined near the base were becoming dots, like miniatures of some kind. Feeling the much thinner air and the cool persistent breeze across his face as his breathing was tougher and more audible while he adjusted. Sweeping his feet, he would slide so that his back could rest against the makeshift stone wall while he relaxed and enjoyed the view for a brief moment. The two pouches on his side were pulled up slightly so that he wouldn't be sitting on them while he also pulled his hair to the side and over the top of the Iwagakure headband that was tied to his head.

It was calm and peaceful, he wanted to find any signs of this 'akuma' and the truth behind it. Whether or not a powerful demon existed up in these mountains or if it was just the village as the rational part of his mind wanted to believe. In any situation, his motivation for this was... shakey at best. Katsumi's recent entrance into the chuunin exams was a moot point for himself until his sister put fear into him, at the powers of others and what they were capable of. He'd trained relentlessly for almost a week now but the chance to see real power in action and maybe even harness a glimpse of it was tempting. But he was only a genin without a plan, there was nothing he could really do, was there?

His mind wandered over the long horizon as he sat there, almost feeling helpless against the scale of it all. If it did turn out to be a demon, he supposed that he could just escape away as quietly as he had come? That was the plan he would have, but every nook and cranny to catch his attention would play at him violently. A slipping rock that fell to his side had him turning his head quickly upwards to find who was there. Enough was enough, he would keep moving and play innocent to the subject. Gathering to his feet and beginning to continue on the path, he would quickly come to find himself scuttling across the narrow pathing of the mountain while hugging the wall and feeling the height he was at very intimately.

Eventually, Katsumi would reach a clearing with some tress and running water down the side of the mountain, a space that seemed carved out right before the mountain began a heavy turn upwards and really gaining in height. To his right was another shorter mountain peak, the area has a small creek that seemed to run downward and puddle in the corner. The path itself tailed off to the right but Katsumi was frozen in place as he was met with the sight of three bandits that had blocked the path to refill their water. Katsumi's dumb stroll to them gained their attention and they quickly dropped their water to pick up their weapons, menacing grins on their faces as the three spread out to face him.

A singular, "Hey" rang out from the one in the middle as his chipped and broken sword pointed his direction and he began to step forward.

The boy would playfully play in the river as he often did, positioned further away from where Katsumi would endure his encounter. As was often the case, the boy's feet were bare, pants rolled up so it wouldn't wet while he dashed through the river. The five year old was rather familiar with the surroundings, the yamabushi he called 'Suzume-neesan' having made a basic camp not too far off, tucked between rising stone and verdant life and further camouflaged with the help of basic techniques taught to academy students. While the whole cover did not fully pull the camp from view, it'd take a pair of trained eyes nonetheless to pay attention to it - most bandits and certainly civilians never caught sight of it. The boy living there with the mountain hermit could, however, spot the camp as easily as he could number his toes, unawarely being trained by the jounin-in-hiding to spot details commoners generally didn't care about. While the idea was for him to spot wild animals in camouflage, it granted him a few additional benefits despite his age.

The benefit of said training would, perhaps, pay off today as he played casually in the water, searching for frogs as he often did just so he could play with them. Once, he had been interested in catching passing fish with his bare hands but the countless failures had ultimately forced him to no longer care about such a 'dumb game' where he could never win anyway. At this moment, he held a stick in his small hands and was prodding a lazy frog resting on the border of the river with it. The frog, hesitant in what to do, allowed the painless prodding to persist until it saw a moment to escape by jumping further into the grass. Much to the boy's amusement.

Of danger was no mention yet, the three men filling up their water quite a while's away and not instantly in sight but the 'hey' randomly ringing out disturbed the boy in his game sufficiently for him to turn his head and peek in the direction where it had come from. His innocent soul not distinguishing the 'hey' as something hostile, he'd wander of along the river for a small part, peeking from behind a tree to see three men with weapons walk over to a youngster. His eyes grew big at the sight of danger, the boy's heart great despite his young age. Knowing he was not capable of wielding the katana once gifted to him, he'd run back to the camp crying, "Suzume-neesan! Suzume-neesan!"

Knife in hand as she was cleaning freshly caught rabbits, the young woman would peek from behind the screen to see what was happening. Kazuki running her direction as quickly as his small legs could carry him, panic in his eyes for what he had seen.

"They are attacking a boy!"
"Calm down, Kazuki-kun. Who is attacking exactly?"
"Mean men. And there was a boy, and they shouted 'hey' before they walked to him."
"Let's go see what this is about, hm?"

Grabbing his hand, the yamabushi would allow to kid to guide her forward, Kazuki eager to have her help out the boy in trouble.

Three stepped forward in their stances, grins and pompous stances began to carry themselves forward slowly, almost as if to close ground without Katsumi really noticing it. Unfortunately, he did, and with each step forward, his own stance lowered towards the ground, the man in the center called out to him,

"Hey, we don't want no trouble, it's just a dangerous place for a kid like yourself to be running around out here..." his words almost twisted at the devilish grin and chuckle that curtailed as his sentence ended. The others next to him were as stereotypical of a group as one could imagine, Katsumi digging himself into the balls of his feet. He needed some form of distraction but instead, his foot stepped backwards and he felt the presence of a high stone wall next to him.

"I'm not just some kid..." he would blurt out at them, not thinking and almost wishing he had held his tongue as he did so. His hand seamlessly reached towards his head and brushed his hair out of the way before pointing towards the headband that was positioned over his forehead. Pointing out to them that he was a ninja and could handle his own. Or to give the appearance of it at least. "You know about the Akuma, right?" his words held the facade of confidence and the air around him shifted as well. Knowing to trump up his deception as he straightened out and let his hand fall loosely but hover near to the wall next to him.

The man in front of him straightened his back out and narrowed his eyes at the brash little kid in front of him, nearly half of his own size, like a brute or juggernaut comparatively. He focused in a bit more before bringing his weapon in front of him and holding it out to point at Katsumi,

"Yeah, and what do you know about that?" the trio would have their attention on Katsumi but would be stopped some 10 or 15 meters away from him in various positions as they waited for an answer.

Katsumi hesitated as he looked around them, feeling out their position, more curious than angry now but still not giving off any hint that they were threatened or truly cautious.

"Well," Katsumi would begin before pulling some explosive clay in his hand and throwing it forward, letting the balls of clay quickly form in shape and seemingly come to life as five little dolls. "They're not the only thing you should be afraid of here..." he would almost mumble to himself as he sent two of the five Kodama forward to charge at the man in the center.

The blade of his katana coming down and cleaving the first one in half instantly as his attention began to move towards the second of the little creatures. The hesitation being his downfall as the cleaved Kodama exploded violently around his blade in a cloud of smoke and rumbling the nearby area. The two extra men each stepping away as the second dove in as well, jumping to the center of the cloud of dust and smoke before another explosion went off as well, adding onto the noise and the field of ash and dirt that was upheaved into the air. A bead of sweat would be drawing from Katsumi's head as he tried to watch forward diligently, waiting for something to happen between each of the bandits in front of him as he held the other three Kodama in place in front of him as a triangle (one in front and one at each diagonal beside him) and would begin the process of forming two more in the formation in front of him very soon.

Dragged along the river's flow, they would reach the spot where Kazuki had seen the bandits and the boy. Kazuki hid behind one of the tall trees and peeked at what was transpiring, the child cautious of his own actions as fear drove him to it. He'd whisper to Mizuki and point with his little finger, showing her how the brigands had already advanced on the boy to attack him. What Kazuki didn't see was the headband on the boy's forehead that identified him as a shinobi of Iwagakure, a detail the yamabushi spotted almost instantly along with his stance and approach on the matter. Kazuki, seeing Mizuki plainly observe the situation while only partially hidden, almost panicked that his 'big sister' was being so careless but before he could surrender to his worries, she rested her hand on his shoulder and pulled him closer.

"Do you see the band around the boy's head?"
"Y... Yes?", he said as his eyes still tried to identify the headband.
"Remember the girl at the tea house? She said she was an Iwa-nin, right?"
He nodded.
"That headband identifies him as a shinobi too.", she'd explain, drawing Iwagakure's kamon into the ground with her fingers. "Let's watch wha-"

Her sentence would be interrupted as Mizuki saw the blade of the boy was about to leave a gruesome display, shielding Kazuki from the horror that followed by his assault. Barely the sword had finished its pathing when an explosion followed and rumbled the ground. A cry of panic escaped the boy held within Mizuki's arms who then decided it was better to bring him to safety. With movement faster than the group could follow, she'd be gone from the scene and back to the camp where the boy would be sheltered.

"Are you alright?"
He nodded quietly, drying a tear from his cheek.
"Go hide in the tent, Kazuki-kun, I'll make sure they won't come closer."

He nodded, hiding in the makeshift tent of furs without hesitation. Once settled inside, Mizuki would take a quick peek inside, confirm him with a nod and return to the spot where the fight occurred, taking the higher ground by moving into the mountain range where she'd continue to watch the event unfurl. All the while, her blue-green eyes would analyse the boy's movement and assess his general level of skill. Explosion Release, though she had never experienced the KKG in battle, was a violent element not to be trifled with - certainly not an element for a boy of five to observe.

The clay dolls he had created would catch her attention, little puppets with a flair of innocence holding the devastating power of Bakuton. The puppets that had created the former explosion. If he held any prowess with them, chances were slim the yamabushi would have to help out the boy in this fight. Perhaps she was better off feeling sorry for the bandits rather than for him, if the power of this advanced element was even remotely true to the rumours they brought forward.
