Mission Objective:
Today was a warm day, surprisingly, in the village of Kumogakure. Many clouds hung overhead like usual and, decaying grass crunched under the many feet of the genin who marched onto a field where they had been told they were going to set up the obstacle course for the weeks Chunin Exams. Tenjin, like usually, had went to the front of the line and continued marching, he was listening to the instructor, taking in as much as he could, the areas where the courses will be set up, the number of materials needed to set up, and the amount of young shinobi there to accomplish the job, all of this was taken into consideration by the information registering through Tenjin's thought. After a minute or so of walking, they were halted, and had arrived. Tenjin stepped forward and being in the front of the line, he saw that behind the instructor lay a large and long obstacle course, many different structures and obstacles that were not setup for the event to take place. Tenjin's sensei explained why they were out here and the tasked each of them with something to accomplish, though Tenjin was only barely listening as he was trying to see what he would have been up against if he was taking the exams. Making out the sight past the obstacle course, after the instructor had finished explaining, he called upon Tenjin and explained that he would go to the first division setup crew. Tenjin simply nodded and slid one foot forward toward the path that went along the course. The instructor called him to start, and Tenjin began to build.

The first obstacles were simple hurdles, easy for one to setup, grabbing the bar of the first hurdle. He then pushed forcefully, in order to attach it to its components and then completed the next two hurdles, after which he built the last hurdle and went on to the next obstacle. The next obstacle was a row of rings set up next to each other, the objective of the obstacle to step in each and to the next obstacle quickly. Tenjin lost no momentum as he continued forward and built the hurdle that lay in front of the ring obstacle. He continued to the next one, a small shack with an extensive length and needed a wooden kunai to be placed on the roof. Tenjin grabbed the kunai and jumped into the air and landed on the side of the house with one hand grabbing on to the roof, in a seemingly long instant now being four feet higher than his previous position and pulling up, he was able to place the kunai from the ground and onto the roof. Tenjin continued and saw dummies that laid on the roof, Tenjin was tasked to set up the obstacle for the dummies to appear in ones sight in different intervals of distance once one picks up the kunai. Once setting this stuff up, he realized that the next section needed assistance, and he waited for his help to arrive. He finally reached the edge of the roof and crouched, only to spring into the air and land on the grassy ground ahead a second later.

Up by dawn, Kaya prepared his spot in the murky morning light, filtered through the clouds obscuring the mountaintop. Since having arrived the previous evening, the preacher made use of his time to wander the city, taking in the pomp and fanfare of the Chunin Exams with distant judgment. He had set up in front of the southern entrance to one of the exam grounds and sat atop a pile of newspapers carefully liberated to serve as his podium. At this time of the day, the event organizers were the only ones arriving. Kaya hoped he mark somebody as a competitor and convince them to boycott the event but so far the village ninja just wandered back and forth performing their morning duties.

Preacher or not, Kaya knew when to pick his battles. He could stand now and yell into the abyss, condemn their obsession with death; but these people weren't his audience, there would be no convincing them here. So instead he sat, arms resting on his knees, chin in hand, daydreaming.

"Genin!" the voice shocked Kaya from his stupor, head snapping to the face of an instructor; one of several leading groups of local Genin into the exam grounds.

"Whu-?"

"Genin who have not signed up for the exams are required to assist with preparations," breaking away from his group, the instructor came towards the boy, hand urging Kaya from his seat.

"Oh, uhh you don-"

"This is class time; the exams are a privilege for our homeland, pay attention and learn now, then, when you compete next time, you'll make yourself and your country proud. Now come on."

With a slight protest, Kaya stood and shuffled towards the group. Surrounded by Kumogakure Jonin and increased security, it didn't seem in his best interest to make a scene. In truth, he blamed the clean mountain streams on the way to the city for his predicament. Typically the boy was an unmistakable tramp, filthy and ragged, but the days traveling through Lightning Country provided some pristine water with which to wash his clothes and face. Bare feet and lack of Hitai-ate aside, he didn't look much out of place all things considered.

The high ranking shinobi led them through a series of rooms and corridors before opening a large door into a central chamber. The obstacle course provided all sorts of terrain, and each run was varied; purpose-built to offer a unique challenge for the competitors. He could see a few groups entering the crucible through different doors, and their leaders began to bark orders. Somewhere in the middle of his huddle, Kaya only found himself called upon after observing for a few moments.

"You!" The instructor pointed to Kaya, who signals to his chest in response "Course one!" his finger leaves the boy and trails towards the middle of a nearby course where another ninja deftly leaps from a roof to await assistance.

"I guess.." shrug.

Jogging, Kaya set off towards the course, leaping at it diagonally to bypass the cumbersome obstacles the Kumo student had already set up. He would land unceremoniously on the side wall of the long shack, bare feet sticking quickly to the wooden surface allowing him to run horizontally along to avoid triggering any of the rooftop dummies. With lacking enthusiasm, the speed at which he runs marks his wall running as a blatant use of spiritual walking practice and not severe momentum. Landing next to his companion, Kaya would offer a nod then peer towards the next section of the course.

Before the pair lay a series of mechanized weapons traps and several baskets of shuriken, kunai, and arrows. A set of wooden structures provide cover and obstacles for the competitors. Kaya looks to the boy at his side, speaking low and tired.

"You set the triggers on the course I'll load the weapons," half-hearted smile.

Kaya would take off again jogging and scoop up the three weapon-filled baskets in his hands, collecting them one on top of another and placing them on his head, steadying with one arm. With the payload secured, Kaya would set to work on the outside of the structures, loading weapons into slots and pulling back the mechanisms. At the end of the first station, Kaya takes a kunai from the stash, looping its tip through the end of his sleeve to unravel a thread. At the end of each firing mechanism, Kaya ties a thread with a loose knot; enough to delay the firing by a fraction of a second, effectively reducing the danger to none in the world of a trained ninja. Kaya repeats this subtle sabotage at each station.

Even when shanghaied into preparing for a festival that honors death and violence, Kaya would be remiss if he didn't do his part to reduce harm to his brothers in arms.

"Hey you!" Tenjin lightly yelled as he noticed a young shinobi setting up obstacles with slight error to their functioning. This wasn't Tenjins village nor is it his obstacle course to make it more challenging but he still felt the need to confront the kid. “What is it that you think you’re doing?” As he asked this, he began walking toward the shinobi. Tenjin sincerely wanted to inquire about this shinobis action, and once he answered he would ask “My names Tenjin, what's yours? And what village are you from?” Knowing that this type of action would certainly lead to a shinobi becoming a missing ninja by virtue of disrespecting their village, unless sabotage was in the villages mission objective. Tenjin is a strategically thinking individual and is also trying to be a step ahead of the situation, thus he is attempting to read the scene with the limited information he possessed. Seeing an instructor walk by, Tenjin was forced to pretend to be hard at work while still talking to the youth. While looking at the kid, he noticed that the kid appeared to be wise beyond his age, something that can be equally said about himself, but unlike Tenjin, this kid appears to have a tired look to his eyes. While nailing some materials together, Tenjin was able to further inquire, “So who are you really, and what is it that you do?” Tenjin as a shinobi that has studied for a majority of his life and is now able to explore the world is fascinated with others and their culture, and due to this, Tenjin is always asking about their backstory in order to have a broader view of the world around him.

Tenjin then began to build a trap that will block an individual from reaching the next obstacle as a means to make the obstacle more difficult. It is apparent that Tenjins philosophy when setting up these traps is contradictory to his partner as Tenjin did want these shinobi to go easy, but instead have a training of their life in order for them to be better opponents for Tenjin in the future. Tenjin himself needs to work 110 percent in order to get to the average strength of a shinobi, and due to this, he would dislike for someone to tamper with his training to make it easier and possibly endanger my life in the actual shinobi world because the training did not completely do what it was meant to do. Tenjin did not make his thoughts known though as he did not know if this would offend the other shinobi, but instead, Tenjin would continue asking questions. “What clan do you come from? What powers do they have and are they all like you or is your particular situation unique?” Tenjin wanted to know what made this kid do what he is doing, and as queries as Tenjin is, he wanted to make it known that he was open to answer questions himself. “If you have any questions about me, feel free to ask.”

Barely past the first set of training ballista and Kaya heard a voice ring out from the inside of the course. He froze in place, hesitant to move in case the security had spotted him. The shrill tone marked it as the voice of his companion, and after the initial shock, he relaxed his stance, giving the boy a chance to approach as he would stay kneeled beside the mechanism, loading it legitimately while under the observation of his partner. During the approach, Kaya would reply to the accusation in a hushed voice,

"I'm just making a few adjustments; it doesn't matter whether the traps are dangerous as long as the people running the course compete as if it's dangerous, right?"

As the other approached, Kaya took his time to mark the boy as a village ninja. His uniform, forehead donned with Iwagakure regalia, revealed his allegiance to the Stone Country. Unlike Kaya, the other boy was apparently a practiced shinobi, his stance and trained build did contrast slightly with the preacher's waifish facade.

"Tenjin," Kaya repeats slowly "I'm Kaya. To tell you the truth, I'm not here representing any village."

With his efforts under scrutiny, for now, Kaya's hands were free to move faster as the two worked through the stages of the course. To either side, village shinobi prowled to and fro, monitoring their students closely. For the first time in his life, Kaya was experiencing what life as a village Genin could be; eyes in every direction, each action observed and graded. While maneuvering his way around the structure, it would be evident to both boys that Tenjin is the more competent of the two. Kaya's work is deliberate and precise but slow through lack of either effort or practice. The preacher swung around the top of a curved awning, standing upside down facing the boy to reply out of earshot of anyone observing.

"I'm a preacher, that's all. I'm traveling to Konoha, on the way I saw how many people were making way to this village, and I had to see the Exams for myself. I'm not part of any clan; I choose to follow a philosophy of peace and intellectual discovery. I am a fisherman's son from the country of Grass." flipping around to load a series of shuriken launchers on the roof, Kaya dropped down a moment later to continue.

"Mostly I try to discourage violence through debate, meditation, and awareness. For two years I've wandered and spread my gospel. I was going to protest the Exams at the southern gate today, but I guess I got conscripted" the last few words drip with venom but his expression remains the same blank stare.

"What about you, Tenjin? What lead you to come all this way, to this festival of war? This city is a long way from home isn't it?"

Two claps broke Kaya's cadence, and an Iwagakure squad leader signaled for him to hurry up. Shrugging, he made his way to the next set of unloaded traps, holstering the weapons as instructed. It wasn't worth the risk of exposure continuing with his earlier efforts, though the decreased concentration afforded him the ability to work and converse more freely while listening to Tenjin's reply.

"Are clans very important to the major villages like yours? And what of your clan?" like Tenjin, Kaya's curiosity was second to none, the quest for discovery and knowledge could be nothing less than a spiritual endeavor.

At the end of the course, the finish line opened up beyond the final obstacle. A vast pit to be laced with fuinjutsu scrolls at the bottom, each containing a variety of painful shocks, burns, and deterrents to failure. Laid before the chasm's mouth were two massive wooden poles corresponding to exposed holes at the bottom of the pit, either side of that were the scrolls to be unraveled in the cavity. Given the sheer size of the obstacle, Kaya surmised this was a test of jumping ability and endurance. Once set up the two wooden pillars would serve as jumping platforms nearly twenty meters apart. Anybody who became injured during the previous section would find it exceptionally difficult to make these long-distance jumps.

Without a word, Kaya approached the scrolls and lept into the pit. It was an obvious conclusion that Tenjin possessed enough strength to lift the wooden pillars so rather than embarrass himself by trying, the boy set to work plastering the walls and floor with the trap seals.

"If the objective of the Exams is to compete, why aren't you in the main events? You seem both motivated and strong, what's holding you back?"

A preacher? Tenjin thought. This is exactly what he wanted to see, a variety of personality once out of the village. To discourage violence in the shinobi world would be a tricky endeavor which may rely on power more than Kaya may realize. Kaya then began asking some question, which Tenjin felt the need to answer in order to have more information on this travelling person. “I come here to experience something new. This is my first time outside of the village. As for bloodlines, clans aren’t as important in Iwagakure as it is in other villages like Kirigakure, and especially Konohagakure. I am just an average shinobi in Iwagakure who has applied into and got accepted to enter the Senchō school of Jinton. Those who know the secrets of the Senchō clan are able to utilize Jinton, a naturally selected ability created through hard work and perseverance when studying and mastering the simultaneous use of Doton, Fūton, and Katon. This nature allows a Senchō to break apart, manipulate, and reassemble molecules. This is accomplished by using Wind Release to manipulate atoms' individual movement, Earth Release to create and destroy the physical structure of molecular bonds, and Fire Release to provide the energy needed to fuse and break those bonds.”

Tenjin paused for a bit before starting again, “I am not even close to mastering this ability though, as I just became a genin not too long ago. Which also explains why I am not in the chunin exams.” Tenjin then looked at the shinobi as he began to work on cleaning up after constructing the obstacle course, and then began to speak. “Are you sure about your protesting in Kumogakure. It doesnt sound like you have any allies, and I’ve heard that the Kumogakure Kage is focused on trying to gather all shinobi under his banner. He wouldnt take kindly to someone trying to create rogue shinobis.” Tenjin wanted to know what this shinobis response would be to the possibility of villages targeting him for his non conformist ways, Tenjin was mostly trying to test the young man in order to see if he was truthfully trying to live and die for his cause because in due time, if he does go far in his quest, some leaders may not like it and even order his assassination. Tenjin grew colder when this thought came to mind as he realized that the shinobi world is fierce no matter what side you pretend to fight for, as anybody and everybody can be considered an enemy regardless of the offense with the laws that shinobi follow. As someone that is obedient to the hierarchy in Iwagakure, Tenjin doesnt necessarily believe in the evil of his state as much as he believes in evil amongst others.

While the pair finished their assigned course, Tenjin recounted the specifics of his school's philosophy. It would be immediately evident by the look on his face that Kaya was impressed with this knowledge, the thought of using the mystic arts to create and control matter in its purest form could be considered the power of Gods. Kaya briefly considered how many years of sacrifice went into perfecting such transcendent chakra control for a shinobi. Whatever his opinion of the village regimes, the preacher admitted to the worthy pursuit of knowledge that monumental. Inexperienced or not, Tenjin possessed the pathway to a power Kaya found genuinely awe-inspiring.

In truth, Kaya's first exposure to elemental theory and the application of it to his own Chi was relatively recent. He considered the components of his own Ki and the nature of both Earth and Fire. With this new knowledge, he would have to contemplate the future of his study into elemental nature.

"I preach a gospel of peace. Spread awareness of suffering," Kaya flipped from the wall of the pit onto the edge and placed the last seal "help people understand oppression."

"I'm not sowing dissension in the street, recruiting revolutionaries, or waging war. I have no fear of reprisal for my beliefs."

It was time to clean away the excess tools and equipment strewn throughout the course and the two set to work in reverse, decluttering the pathway for the next genin who would fall prey to its lethal design. Having been inside one of the examination halls and seen it first hand, Kaya's opinion of the whole ordeal hadn't changed; this grim celebration was sickening. The very thought of children competing in death trials for the amusement of a nation made Kaya's stomach churn; it was all he could do not to yell out in profound judgment, condemn each of those who stood in this hall to propagate the slaughter. That was not the way to win this fight. Perhaps, maybe, several of the people who heard his vitriol would set upon a path of peace, but moments later Kaya would be killed. This was the truth of Kaya's gospel, the unattainable goal towards which the young preacher strides: to endure so that he may help humanity not succumb to its vices.

As the two finished the cleaning, instructors clapped hands and blew whistles, calling back the classes of genin to their groups; moving on to the next endeavor before trainees would arrive on the newly minted obstacle courses. As it became clear the two would soon separate, Kaya would offer his parting words.

"You've given me a lot to meditate on, Tenjin. I'm sure I'll see you again, I want to witness your school's power with my own eyes one day."

Slipping away with a different group than the one he had been picked up by earlier, the young wanderer would file out of the auditorium into the mid-morning. Once outside, Kaya would veer from the group, coming to a stop at the mouth of a thin street, letting the Kumo genin march to wherever they were ordered. Alone again in the city, Kaya had plenty of time to consider the day. The original plan of protesting the exams was still viable. However, the morning had already taken an unexpected turn, affording him a chance to meditate on this new information and analyze the possibility of a sect in Iwakagure who seemed to have unlocked the secrets of the universe.

Producing his map and pencil, Kaya studied the hand-drawn route to the Land of Fire. He trailed it with the tip of his pencil, and the drew a rough circle followed by a line between Konoha and Iwagakure. There he made a series of notes: 'Senchō Sect: Secrets of Matter', 'Tenjin: Fellow Journeyman'.

End.
