Willowy elongated fingers reached out through the darkness to silence the alarm before it even began to go off: she hadn’t slept again. The pills she had been given weren’t working anymore, and hadn’t been for weeks. She had survived simply on a few hours here and there, a nap or two a day. But, even that was failing her now. Every time she closed her eyes the past came up into the forefront of her mind and she found herself sneaking off to her brother’s room just to check on him and make sure he was alright, or pacing their tiny apartment double checking the locks on the windows and doors, making sure that there was nothing lurking in the darkness waiting to snatch them up. It had been months since their freedom was obtained, since they had battled and fought side by side against their captors and freed themselves, and yet when she closed her eyes the past haunted her as if they were still living within it.
With the softest of sighs leaving her pale lips she sat up on her bed, pushing the covers off of herself and allowing the coldness of the room to assault her flesh. She waited but a moment before pausing and standing, allowing the white nightgown she wore to fall down around her and to her knees, held up by two inch thick straps on her shoulders: the nightgown the same alabaster white as her flesh, and making her resemble something more akin to a phantom than any sort of human. She reached over, flicking the switch to her bedside lamp and flooding the pale walled room in its yellowy glow. Her room was exactly as it had been when they had first purchased the pre-furnished apartment: empty and sparse, with barely anything to leave a tale behind of the owner of the room: the biggest change being the sheer volumes of books that littered the built in bookshelves and the desk.
Reaching over to the bedpost nearest to her she pulled free her housecoat, slipping her arms into the thin cloth against the chill of the room: it helped, but only a little. Folding her arms around herself after pulling the front closed she headed towards her bedroom door, pausing as she caught her pale reflection with the far too large black eyes in the mirror. She stared at herself for but a moment before closing her eyes and sighing. Shaking her head she opened her eyes and walked out of the door, leaving it open behind herself as she headed toward the kitchen – allowing the soft yellow glow to guide her way down the otherwise dark hallway. She paused outside of her brothers door, wondering if he was awake yet, before heading on and into the kitchen itself.
Much like her bedroom the rest of the apartment was chilly and cold too, and she paused near the thermostat to turn it up, hoping that the heat would kick on soon, before heading over to the one object she actually gave half a care in the world over – the coffee pot. It had been filled with water and coffee grounds the night before so that all someone had to do was turn it on in the morning, which Lily did with a simple flip of the switch before folding her arms around herself once again. Leaning her backside against the counter she listened as the sound of the coffee pot heating up the water began to fill the air, staring ahead of her at the blank wall across the way while thinking back to the thoughts and nightmares which had made sleep impossible. As the past began to encase her mind once more a far-away look came to her eyes: a sign her body was there but her mind was far gone, the very world around her fading away from view as the past took its place.
