A black sphere slept quietly on her waist, resting in a pouch hanging languidly around her waist. The mission reception had drilled into her during the five agonising minutes of her briefing the critical importance this stone found its way to its destination. Her father used to speak to her like that, voice sharp and stern, with no room for mistakes. She was used to it, and her face betrayed no frustration that she'd need to trek a day in each direction to deliver a meager pebble.
The trees around her shuffled uncharacteristically in the windless evening, reeling the girl back to the present from her self-absorbed musings. A wall of solid ice rose rapidly from the ground, shielding her right from a barrage of metallic kunai and shuriken, each bouncing harmlessly off. Through the crystal clear of her ice, Weiss surveyed the failed ambush. A dark figure was nestled amongst the bushes, disappearing behind thickets of plants. Ice coalesced beneath her feet, and with one step Weiss found solid footing above the soft ice that used to meekly give way with each step. Not entertaining her attacker, her legs sped her through the woods, the aesthetic robe fluttering harmlessly, forgotten, behind her.
Amidst her soundless footsteps, the noise of her pursuer reached her ears clear as day as each branch was pushed out of the way or torn down. Another set of kunai rained down on her, but none caught the girl, each just claiming their mark a second too late as Weiss easily ignored the futility of his rushed throws. The seals latched to the bottom of her feet kept her firmly above ground, unhindered unlike the bandit hot on her heels.
Weiss felt a burst of energy, followed by the sound of trees collapsing. Another wall of ice shot out, catching the knuckles aimed for her cheek in its icy grip, before growing to encase his arm in ice. Weiss met his gaze, harsh blue against fearful green as clear ice crept up to his shoulder. The insignia on his chest was the same as an ambusher five hours ago. She'd concluded he was after her, not the sigil stone of Kirigakure she carried on her person. Clearly her naivety backfired.
Her attacker struggled to wrench his hand from her clutches, only for the ice to sneak up the new appendage. She drowned out his cries – not without gripping her knuckles tightly as the ice sealed off his mouth – and turned to continue her trek. She wouldn't look back to see the large chunk of ice that housed the shadowy figure within, just like how she didn't look back a kilometer away, where anyone could see the same scene replay itself with the picturesque image of a bandit being held prisoner.
Just because Myrtenaster wasn't with her didn't mean she was useless. Far from it. She could prove she was still a danger if provoked.
The two parted ways, with Weiss keeping in mind the advice that Nozomi had for her, agreeing to meet up for a future session at an unstipulated time, silently hoping that when such a time came to pass, she would be better prepared to deal with the Jonin in front of her. However, she had learned from this encounter that her rapier, as it was, would be insufficient, and with that in mind, in the following weeks, the girl would relinquish it in favour of a better one, sending it to the man known as Sero Osada on the suggestions of some of her acquaintances. Never would she know why, but never would she need to.
Still, pain gripped Weiss' heart with every step. She shouldn't asphyxiate him. She shouldn't freeze him to death. If he fell from neither oxygen nor cold, he was a ripe picking for the winter wolves that prowled the lands, intent on picking their next meal. This was far from her first kill, but she had always ended them quick. Her opponents would bleed quickly in the name of Kirigakure, with open throats or pierced torsos. Seldom did they wait anxiously for their lifeline to end, trapped with no escape.
Her right hand dropped to the pouch, where the stone was firm against the hard leather of its casing. Feeling it in her hand calmed her racing heart. She pictured the boundary of Kirigakure's influence, the ledge where the complex sealing array was set up days before. The photograph slightly blurry against the print of her mission brief was still a recognisable landmark, a trek six hours away, two if she ran. Her footsteps though, didn't speed, continuing the dry pace she'd set in case the attackers repeated their predictable patterns.
Weiss breathed in relief when she finally set the small stone down in the center of the large mural drawn onto the narrow ledge, going around it and overlapping in various places. The Fuuinjutsu used was brilliantly complex, but Weiss' interest stretched only as far as she could walk on the short outcropping. She had been exposed to arrays far more confusing. While she couldn't reproduce it, the various matrices were obvious to her.
Regardless, satisfied with her work, she turned away, beginning the long walk back to Kirigakure's walls. Maybe if they were lucky, she'd reach her attackers before they were lost for good, though she didn't know which thought haunted her greater.
