The atmosphere within the Soga home the night before Yoshimi was to move into a new home with her girlfriend Setsuko was restless. It wasn’t that it was tense, it was a good sort of restlessness, a sort of restlessness that often was stirred up when a new chapter was opening in one of seven of their lives. An unspoken buzz of anxiousness and excitement swirling around in every member of the entire family for the second youngest child. Well, at least of the members of the family who were currently gathered around for dinner in the family home. Two of the five siblings didn’t live at home anymore, one having moved out when he was Yoshimi’s age, and the other having been kicked out of the home after an event that Yoshimi doesn’t like to discuss.
So, there were five of them currently gathered around the dinner table, Yoshimi, her spoiled little sister, Taraka, and their older brother Saburo, who was the middle child of the family and going to university for law, and their parents, Fumio and Umeko. The dinner table that they owned was one that was round and could fit every member of their large family, including one or two others at a time. It would be Yoshimi’s last dinner at the family home, at least in the form of actually living there. Of course she would go there to visit her family, but that didn’t stop the moment from being ever so slightly bittersweet. Still, the family conversed as usual, bursting with laughter and joy as they usually did at the table. Dinner was, as usual, quite a happy affair. They never really argued at the table, and they did so even less now that Schichiro, the problem child of the family had been kicked out.
Dinner went on with Yoshiko bubbling happily about her plans for the next day, Taraka complaining that she was going to miss her sister, Saburo being his normal understanding self, and their parents, of course being their usual over-protective and loving selves. They were melancholy about Yoshimi moving out, but they knew that had to let her do what she’d like to do with her life now. When dinner was cleared from the table, the chore of doing the dishes was shared by the two sisters before everyone reconvened at the table. And, to surprise his sister, at this moment, the eldest, Arata appeared to wish his little sister good luck for the day to come. So, with the family mostly complete, they all sat at the table and enjoyed each other’s company, playing games late into the night before finally saying their goodnights and going to their beds, and in Arata’s case, home.
It was nearly three in the morning now, and having to go to sleep when excited was something that was always difficult for Yoshimi and she often went sleepless with restless excitement. In this case why she was exited was that she’d just graduated from the academy a few days beforehand and now it was the night before she was to move in to her new place with Setsuko, her girlfriend of three years. They’d been planning to move in together for nearly a year now, whispering about it excitedly in the hallways of the academy as graduation came closer and closer. It had, of course, caused them to beg their parents to allow them to, because they were reluctant to let their daughters leave their family homes, but eventually they had consented – after all, Yoshimi’s parents couldn’t exactly tell their daughter no when her oldest brother Arata had moved out when he was only sixteen years of age and they allowed their children a great ideal amount of independence. Sixteen was technically a legal adult after all.
So, here they were. Sixteen and freshly graduated from the academy as Genin, and were moving into nice little apartment that the pair had picked out together. It was a one bed, one bath, with a nice open spaced living room and cut away kitchen and an office room that they had decided that they were going to use as a training room/armory. That little office room had really been the only other part that they’d really wanted in addition to the one bedroom and bathroom, as they didn’t want to clutter their bedroom with things related to their new job as official shinobi of Kumogakure. They didn’t really need somewhere big, as it was just the two of them, and they were used to sharing a lot of things already because they’d been together for so long. It was going to be a wonderful new chapter of their life.
Of course, shopping for furniture and other necessities had happened, and their parents had obviously had influence on some of what they’d chosen, making sure that they were to have everything they needed. Everything from pots and pans, to towels and a bed, etc. Still, even though they both allowed some of their parents influence this apartment was theirs and it was going to be decorated the way that they wanted. It was their first experience living on their own and they intended to make the best of it. They’d discussed a lot of how they were going to decorate their apartment and it was one of the most exciting things. After moving everything in with the help of their families and the movers that was what they had the intention of spending the very next day doing, or rather, rest of the day, as it was already three in the morning.
Grinning to herself Yoshimi flopped down on her twin size bed for the last night in their family homes, with a book to attempt to while away the time that she had left to wait, having no initial intention of going to sleep, her mind too preoccupied; even if it would make her tired for the next day. Her books were already packed away of course, but she’d filched one of her little sister’s technique books for the night, it was just like one of her own. Both Yoshimi and Setsuko’s parents had insisted that they spend one more night at home before moving into their apartment, otherwise either Yoshimi or Setsuko would have been at the other’s home excitedly raving about the day that they ahead of them. The blond lay the book down to her side smiled up at her ceiling for a few moments more before rolling onto her side and tapping the genin head protector that was laying on the bedside table, enjoying watching how the light glanced off the smooth shiny surface. It, coupled with the outfit she was going to wear for the next day, was one of the few things that still wasn’t packed away in storage to arrive at the apartment the day they moved in.
The next thing that Yoshimi knew, her shoulder was being shaken and she jolted awake to face her mother, Umeko. She didn’t even remember falling asleep the night before, but she must have. She hummed and rolled over so that she could read her mother’s lips. This early in the morning she was too groggy to pay attention to listening to the muted sounds that greeted her ears. “Morning, sunshine.” Her mother said with a grin, chuckling as she watched Yoshimi start to pull the blanket over her head before pausing and bolting up right at the next words that left her lips to stare at the clock. “You slept in.”
She looked wild eyed at her mother for a moment before bolting up out of bed. “Setsu’s going to kill me!” She cried, alarmed, bouncing around her room before bolting to the bathroom for probably the quickest shower of her life before dressing, grabbing her last few things, and running downstairs as fast as she could and rushing to the apartment to meet her girlfriend. By the time she arrived it was 8:45 and Yoshimi was fifteen minutes late. Pink in the face, Yoshimi rushed up to her girlfriend and ran a hand nervously through her already mussed hair with a smile. “S-sorry, Setsu! I slept in past my alarm, and mom didn’t wake me up until eight twenty… I told her what time we were supposed to meet too. I’m so sorry, please don’t be mad at me?”
