It had to have been the humidity in the air, the heat of the stone structures, the calm wind that did no more but to allow the rays of sun to wrap around subjects even tighter. Those were all justifications Kurai used before to make reason of the enigma that consumes him. The ultimate question: How can someone so keen, so practical be at the mercy of such a precarious nature? He had initially credited such a unique package to his environment. With time though, and travel, it has become evident that it is something that couldn't be avoided, it was who he was. Perhaps there was an underlying arrogance that warranted some acknowledgement as well. These thoughts and contemplations came frequently, Kurai being an avid writer, reader, and ... thinker/observer. With hobbies like that, introspection was a staple of his life, and for the foreseeable future, continue to be. The young Uchiha had just returned from an adventure of sorts, a chain of events that lent itself to further analysis. And for Kurai, there was only one way that analysis could be done. The afternoon was at its peak and Kurai was off to retrieve his journal to catalogue the events of the past few days.

*JOURNAL ENTRY*

My pen weeps, as the neglect it has endured is unexpected and undeserved. My feeble excuse though is that the events of recent have left a mark that flares inside of me so sensationally, that I haven't had the usual urge to transpose the raw emotion into eloquent prose. I do now, as I am no longer satisfied with the shock and am in need of confrontation. A specific encounter that will be bring new information and possible resolution to the issue. It all began with a silent walk along silent streets, as do most adventures...

I walk proudly, knowing that my eyes leave nothing to chance as they calculate and give my conscience useful data. With strong legs and an even stronger mind, my body advanced throughout the town, nearing the village gates. A parcel resting ever so gently in my arms was destined for the city of Iwatomi. Tasks like such were of no surprise nor inconvenience. Everyone has their season, and in my such season, my duty to the village often include executing missions too mundane for those of higher skill. To most, tasks like this would seem bothersome, but to I, one who's life is never void of action, it was a mildly pleasant change of pace...

---------------

In mid stroke, Kurai was interrupted by a sound outside his post. Kurai loved the serenity of the relatively high tower he sat upon. As he peered down a shinobi was being escorted into the Task Force hall but a few 10 meters off. He recognized the men that surrounded the shinobi. They were the guards that patrolled the city of Iwatomi... Whatever is going on, it must pertain to what happened a few days ago... I have to get down there to learn more. He slipped inside the tower, and spiraled down to the base and exited rapidly. Kurai's cognition of what happened was still blotchy, he hadn't put all the pieces together, a main reason why he was so pleased. But he did recall that the characters that were for some reason escorting an Iwagakure shinobi to the Task Force Hall, were characters that were... uncertain, at best.

Satsohi moved casually as two ninja escorted him into the Task Force Hall. He was having a rather normal day. He was visiting his brother that morning and doing a little training afterwards. He was in a better mood than usual as well. Then these guys showed up to inform him that he was needed for a mission. Iwagakure had better be thankful for all the missions he did over his time as a ninja. What would they do without him? Now, he was walking into a debriefing to see what lied before him. He never got nervous about these things, as he had done it too many times. There wasn't anything that scared him either, so that helped. He would walk into a room with several chairs and a desk. He took a seat in the middle one, followed by his two escorts sitting on either side of him. Now that he was closer he could recognize the older man sitting across from him. It was a village elder. Why in the world would he call Satoshi here? Unless....Kazu!

"By now I'm sure you realize that a mission isn't the only reason you are here Satoshi. Nothing major has happened to Kazu Kanetsu, he just stepped down from his position and is taking some time to himself. We have no way of contacting him at the moment, so there is no need to ask. You probably know where to find him anyway. We are in the process of selecting a new Kage. Things are going to start changing around here, Satoshi. I just wanted to let you know personally." The man's voice was a raspy baritone that matched his age. Sato fought his emotions with every ounce of his strength. He was angry for many reasons. Why did Kazu leave without a word? Who would take his place? What was Iwa going to do? He had too many questions that needed answering, but he wouldn't be hateful to the older man. There was no need for such a thing. "Understood. I have a good idea of where I can find him. I'll investigate after this mission. What are the details?" Satoshi actually impressed himself with the control he showed. A few years ago and the table would be torn in half and the walls burnt to a crisp. He had come a long way.

"I'm impressed. You really have become an incredible shinobi." The man spoke about his control, obviously knowing the shinobi's anger. "As for your mission, there have been some people that have gone missing out near the border of the village in a small community. I want you to go investigate it and stop them if you can. We have sent a few ninja previous to this and they have turned up missing as well, so be careful Satoshi. You are dismissed." The man spoke confidently as he finished, sliding over the directions and any other information he had on the situation. Satoshi didn't respond, grabbing the scroll and nodding. He would get up and exit with the two escorts behind him. "If you are going with me on this mission you are going to have to listen to what I say. I won't save you if you get in a bad situation." He spoke coldly to them as they got outside the building. He really didn't want anyone tagging along at this point. He needed some time alone.

Entering the Task Force was a definite "no-go", trying to eavesdrop wouldn't go well, instead, Kurai decided to wait outside, and follow. In addition, Kurai truly already had enough details on the situation, he knew that they were going to investigate something that related to him a few days ago. Since Kurai couldn't remember what it was, he was going to use these three as a trigger. As soon as the three shinobi were out of sight. There were enough eyes about, to keep Kurai honest and sharp about his methods of espionage. There was a hill over yonder that was a optimum spot for bird watchers at this time of the day, but they weren't just bird watchers, they were elite special jounin bird watchers. There was also a row of benches about 20 meters away and just wide of both sides of the building. At the current moment, about 6 women in total were occupying a seat, all A rank sensory shinobi. In other words, even the slightest chakra activity shown by a Genin would be acknowledged immediately. Okay then...

Kurai retreated back to his tower to enact his plan. He had to be quick, he didn't know how much longer the task assigning process would take. The time varied from shinobi to shinobi greatly. On the bottom floor, there was a box of black tar on a creaky and ratty shelf. The den had no lighting, making it easy for Kurai to stumble on his way to the shelf. With vicious scoops with his fingers, he smeared the tar all over his face and up his arms, giving the impression that he had been involved in a fire. The black film caused Kurai to cough excessively, creating veins along his forehead and caused him to perspire. Now I need some blood. He couldn't possibly trust wounding himself with any thing that was in here. Kurai examined his nails and decided they would do. A tiny pull from his teeth was he needed to sharpen them a bit, then he ran it rapidly along his left arm, drawing a long shallow gutter of blood. His appearance had to be convincing and also unrecognizable just in case those guys escorting the Iwa-nin were of accurate suspicion. Kurai heard a voice, It's showtime.

The acting Uchiha stumbled out of the bottom floor of the tower, sure to get the attention of the Iwa-nin as he would be in view. After a few more steps, Kurai collapsed to the ground, falling emphatically on his right side, making sure his left side (arm) was visible so they could see the blood. He struggled to lift his head, shaking slightly as he fixed his mouth... "Hel--p, me?" With only one eye open, Kurai could see the puzzled look in the eyes of the two "escorts". Their surprised faces might have said: "Oh my God, what happened to that guy?" or "Where did he come from?" or "How long has he been like that?" But to Kurai, and his keen eye, the gentle downward curl of the corner of the lips and their contemptuous narrow eyes said one thing, and one thing only: "We know this guy from somewhere?" And you do... and once I find out how, you're going to regret it. Kurai could also see doubt, given Kurai's condition and appearance they couldn't be sure, and they wouldn't be able to act on their suspicion outwardly, if they were some type of spy.

Kurai's plan was to get the Iwa-nin to assist him and escort him to the hospital, where he would use the much more lax security to tail them from there. It was his only option, there was no way he could tail them without chakra given the guards, and no way he could use chakra given the sensory kunoichi, and if he would have taken a direct approach, the "spies", according to Kurai, might have recognized him beyond doubt.

As Satoshi was about to head out, he heard weak words from the right of him. He glanced to see an injured kid walking his way asking for help. He collapsed to the ground, causing him to raise an eyebrow. From the looks of it, he had been in some sort of fire. Satoshi glanced around the sky's to see no smoke in the air from a potential fire. Something was off here, but he didn't want to make a big deal of it. With a sigh he walked over to the boy and lifted him over his shoulder. "We are making a pit stop at the hospital first. Let's go." He spoke plainly as he took off towards the building. As he was running, with his two escorts behind him, he noticed a couple of other strange things about the kid. His body temperature wasn't higher than normal, which was rare in a fire situation. The young man also lacked any burns on his body that Sato could see. What was this guy's deal? The trip didn't take long as Satoshi was quite fast. He walked into the hospital with the boy still over his shoulders.

"Some help here?" He asked in a sort of rude tone. A nurse rushed off to grab a cart to carry him on. "No need, just point me to the room you want him in." Satoshi said with a wave of his hand. Confused, she nodded and lead him down a white hallway. Two turns to the left and one to the right was all it took for them to arrive at a vacant room. Satoshi turned to his escorts with a look of pure command. "Stay here. I want to talk to this kid alone. I'll be out in a few minutes." He spoke strongly to them, and they made no attempt to follow him into the room. The nurse ran out, rushing to get supplies to start the kid on. Once she left, Satoshi flopped him on the bed without the usual care of a patient. "You body may look like you were in a fire, but a closer look tells me otherwise. What is your game here kid?" He asked rather quietly, not wanting to alert the escorts outside. He had never seen either of them before and didn't particularly trust them.

In moments the Iwa shinobi approached the fallen ninja. He looked over Kurai closely before picking him up and rushing him to the hospital. Despite his actions, his tone and demeanor said that he had no real empathy for Kurai, either that, or he didn't buy his act entirely. Through Kurai's barely open eyes, the fleeting scenery was but a blur as he lied over the man's shoulder. He's probably going to charge me the express rate. Kurai caught brief glimpses at the escorts, he couldn't make out anything in particular, this could all be a huge misunderstanding on his part, but Kurai's thirst for adventure and his inquisitive spirit wouldn't let him abandon this scheme until he had definitive evidence to support either case. Phase one though was in progress, he was able to latch himself onto this little convoy and was ready to extract even more intelligence, all in the hopes of gaining more knowledge about what happened to him a few days ago.

Once they got to the hospital, his carrier led him to an empty room with a firm bed that he plopped him down on. As soon as he hit the cold sheets a smile was forced upon his greasy face. There was twinkle in his eye as he knew he was figured out. He had no real intention on trying to deceive a comrade, so he knew his "helper" would understand if he indeed allowed him an opportunity to explain such a ruse. The Iwa shinobi stated that at a distance Kurai's performance was impressive, but upon close inspection many holes surfaced revealing the deception. "I apologize for failing in deceiving you. I was rushing, plus I was low on resources and opportunity. But my 'game' is to investigate what happened to me a few days ago. I woke in a foreign town, beaten and battered, I've only retained bits and pieces from the entire ordeal. My gut tells me you are working on something that might be related, subsequently quenching my thirst to know what happened, and how I can... make it 'right'."

Whoever this guy was, he was highly intelligent like Kurai, and he knew he would respect his direct approach, but also knew he would likely not allow him to get involved. Kurai was small and obviously of low rank, because if he was of substantial rank the guy would probably be somewhat familiar of him. But he would leave the perceptive ninja with this. "I know I don't have to tell you this... but those escorts, something about them reminds me of my experience, my gut tells me they were involved. A professional like you doesn't put much stock into what a person's gut says, I know, and I also know I don't have to tell you to be careful." He spoke quietly. Kurai winked at the fellow Iwagakure shinobi.

------------------(The Escorts)
"Can you believe that guy, whatever his name was, I forgot it already. But he already doesn't trust us. Are you sure we should go through with this? Not to mention something about that small white haired boy makes me feel uneasy. Like I know him from somewhere. This whole job just seems off Neeto." They stood along the wall across from the room, speaking lowly among themselves. Neeto placed a hand on Dean's shoulder to calm him a bit. "All valid points, but panicking will only intensify them. How many jobs have we pulled off where we were working our own crimes? Kidnapping those who we were helping catch us?" Neeto couldn't hold back a grin of pure arrogance before continuing. "I'll give the Iwa-nin this, he does appear to be more professional than the rest, and he's not going to accept everything on face value, but not even he will be able to justify making us out to be anything other than escorts. No matter how untrustworthy we seem, we've been chosen by his superiors and nothing is going to change that, nothing can arise that will irrevocably cause him to terminate the mission. That is where his intelligence will prove to be his detriment. Now enough, we go on as planned. This is going to be our biggest payday by far, it's going to be worth every lie and every minute of torture we put these traitors through." Dean's color was returning to his face. He slowly turned his head to face his partner. "What do you mean, 'these'?" Neeto smiled again, reeking of gaudiness, "Oh yeah, we're taking both of them. The kid is special like you said. I gave him special treatment last time we met, but not again. This time he will face the same fate as all the others."

Sato simply listened as the kid explained himself. Did he really do all of that just to go on the trip? He must be pretty confident in a hunch to go this far. If he was right and the "escorts" outsider meant trouble, it would be nice to have someone who had some experience with what they do. There was the problem with the kid's age and power. He was probably a Genin, meaning he was weak and would need protecting. He thought about it for a minute. Normally, he would tell the kid no and to go home, however since he already had the suspicions himself, he hesitated. "I tell you what kid, you can come with me. I have a few conditions though. You must listen to what I say and obey without question. I don't want to have to answer for the death of a Genin that wasn't assigned the mission. Also, if it turns out you're wrong and get me in a bad situation, I will beat you down afterward. Lastly, do not let them know we are on to them. Act as normal as possible, as we might scare them off otherwise. I'm taking a risk here, so don't make me regret it." Satoshi finished his response with a glance to the door. The men were talking, but he couldn't make out what they were saying.

"I'm Satoshi Kanetsu, by the way. I'm a Jounin. What's your name and rank?" He would ask with curiosity. He was certainly interested in what clan this kid came from. Not many Genin would have thought of all of this and had the courage to follow through. He could actually be of some use in the future. Next he needed to think of a reason for the boy to be healthy and for him to come along with the three of them. Not that the men could question Sato, considering he was the leader of the mission. He just didn't want to give them any reason to suspect him. "The story is that I healed you and that you are now in debt to me. I chose that debt to be payed via this mission. I don't actually know Medical Ninjutsu, but they won't know the difference. Got it?" He asked the boy one last thing before turning to the door. He would wait until the kid was ready to leave.

To Kurai's surprise, the shinobi actually offered to allow Kurai to join the mission. This was great for him, now he didn't have to sneak around. The nin's name was Kanetsu, Satoshi. Kanetsu, Kanetsu... That's the same clan as the former Kage, Kazu. The clan that possesses the ability to manipulate earth and fire chakra natures to create lava... Satoshi asked for Kurai to return the greeting. "I am Han, Kurai. My current ninja rank is Genin." That was his name, his mother was the Uchiha, but she chose to take her husband's surname, "Han". Kurai didn't necessarily mind telling people that he hailed from the Uchiha clan, but it just never seemed to come up in conversation.

Now that the two were going to be working together, Satoshi formulated a story for them to use as to why Kurai would be joining them and why he was healthy enough to do so. "Sounds solid enough, enough to keep them at bay." Kurai rose up from the bed and made his way to the door. "After you, Satoshi." They exited the room, meeting the gaze of the two escorts standing alongside the opposite wall. Kurai adopted a frustrated expression, an extremely good one at that. "This is the last time I practice my fire style in a closed area with no one around. But honestly, is it necessary that I have to go just because I inconvenienced you. Isn't it your job as a shinobi to help anyway, especially being a medical shinobi, like, c'mon." Kurai sighed heavily, pleased greatly with his performance.
