Spoiler:

Darkness surrounded him and the faint echo of a small boy crying fills his ears. Suddenly there is a large tree before him with a fuma shuriken sticking out of it. Resting on the shuriken is the head of Rin Kimura, weeping tears of blood. "Why did you let then get me Kenno? Why do you get to live and I suffer!? TELL ME WHY!"

Kennosuke woke with a start, jolting upright in his bed, his skin slick with sweat and his heart pounding. He had hoped that being back in his bed would ease the nightmares but it only seemed to worsen them. With a sigh he swings his feet off the bed and sits up on the side. The sun had yet to rise, leaving the young Shinobi with mere hours of sleep once again.

He sat there in the silence for some time, collecting himself the best he could. Not only did he struggle with the death of his friend, but the knowledge of a traitor operating in his village appalled him. Ever since waking up in the infirmary all he could think about was bringing the traitor to justice and getting revenge for both his own father and for Rin. Even just thinking about it filled Kennosuke with unspeakable rage.

A bird chirping outside reminded him that he had an exhibition match today and that he needed to get moving. He dressed himself in his normal normal sleeveless, black undershirt but left his black haori that had the Kimura insignia on it laying on his bed, next to his sash and Hitai-ate. His hair had been done in three tight braids on the sides, leaving the top straight and it was all gathered in a pony tail.  He grabs his sword, deciding to just carry it and turns to leave but pauses before a small mirror. While the physical  injuries he sustained had healed, the scars showed themselves plainly across across his face.

With a sigh he leaves his room and the Kimura Compound, moving through Konoha quickly to the assigned arena. He honestly didn't know who he was even fighting but a good fight was what he needed. It would help him get him mind on something else, atleast for awhile.

There was laughter and merrymaking all across the village Ting called home. Hosting the incredibly popular Chunin Exams was always a massive honor for any village, and Konoha was not the sort to undersell it’s glory with guests afoot. As the somewhat overwhelmed young woman made her way through droves of people, her sandals steadily clacking as she refused to give up her pacing and succumb to the beastly river of people.

Where exactly was young Ting headed with such intensity right in the midst of the exams, one might have thought to ask. She had found herself at an opportunity to gain some money and knock out some strategizing while doing what she had been tasked to do endlessly over the last week. Fight.

“We need to create excitement during the off periods of the exams. The more crowds we can gather, the more our pock- Konoha will benefit.” The well dressed keeper of the stall which sold all manner of photos, posters, signs and - for a select few popular contestants - even action figures. Ting saw the blue haired doll sitting off to the side and couldn’t help but smirk as she looked back up at the man whom she had little actual interest in assisting.

What would you have me do? I’m already out in the open which, let me tell you, hasn’t been peaceful since these things started.” She would roll her eyes, it was evident that the man was going to continue to push and if Ting were being honest with herself was actually too bored when she had nothing to do between rounds. Her reluctant rouse was for nothing, as she would soon thereafter ask a follow up question, sealing the deal.

Well? What am I doing to attract business?” her face would look unamused but she was truly just satisfied to be out of her house and into something that wasn’t scheduled.

“See that gentleman over there? Go have a friendly exhibition match against him. Seeing a semi-finalist in action off the clock will really get these people going.” The round-faced shopkeeper almost seemed giddy with excitement as Ting looked over toward the dark-haired man clad in dark clothing. The blue-haired woman would wave away the rotund man and walk over toward the low-looking man.

Her short tan colored shorts and green striped crop top were only acceptable due to the odd warm front that had swept over the village on this particular day, unusual for the fall but happily accepted nonetheless. In thick lettering the front of her shirt read “Badgirl.” Nobody of any importance had seen her in such casual attire in a very long time. She was comfortable though, and that was what really mattered.

Hello! I’m Ting, I suppose I’ll be your opponent today.” She would present herself with a smile which came from a genuine place. She was happy to be doing this. It was a great relief to do something without the pressure of proctors and cameras. Something with much lower stakes was a welcome retreat.

Any preferences you’d like to lay down before we start?

Kennosuke stood there alone for some time, his emerald eyes scanning the crowd for the Genin that would be his opponent. Rekka was held loosely in his left hand and his face emotionless. Very few clouds hung in the sky, letting the sun’s ray’s beam down bright and true. Soon enough, his waiting was ended as a blue haired girl approached him and introduced herself as Ting. She wore tan shorts and a striped shirt that had ‘Badgirl’ across it, which made him smirk. He had seen this girl at the compound, though with everything that had happened they had never really crossed paths before.

“Kennosuke.” He replied to her introduction with a slight nod. Ting had done well for herself in the Exams. It would have been better to meet her there, but having missed his first fight he was disqualified. Not that it mattered to him anymore, he was honestly glad he didn’t have to be a part of that particular spectacle right now. He tosses Rekka into the hard packed dirt on the outskirts and turns, retreating a ways into the small area to put a bit of space between the two of them before facing her again. “We go till one of us gives in.” He pauses, studying the girl before him for a moment. “Or until one of us can’t continue. Anything you want to add? If not, I’m ready.”

He watches the Girl, his eyes intent on her. This would be a good fight, regardless of the outcome. His mind was clear for the first time in days as now he had but a singular focus. The heat of battle was upon him and he finally began to feel alive again. Without even realizing it, a wolfish grin spread across his face as he waited for her to either attack or talk. He had nothing but time, but would prefer to get to the fighting.

There was no real pause in the conversation as he the young man introduced himself to Ting. His words were right to the point and he seemed not to dally. Perhaps he wasn’t here for conversation after all, his mind possibly focused hard on the bout to come. Despite her incredibly casual attire, Ting was more than prepared for such a contest of combat prowess. She had been doing this practically in her sleep by this point in the chunin exams. Those butterflies which usually fluttered within her stomach had left her almost a week ago. She was a confident, powerful young woman. Kashiki, Yoshito, and Yūgen. All had fought vastly differently than the last and she had prevailed. Even with her semifinals match to come, her hazel eyes would reflect confidence and power back at Kennosuke as she looked into his.

Out of her small pouch she would toss her spiked gloves to the same area which the discarded Ninjato would lay. This was going to be a fight without weapons. She would focus chakra through her body, giving no tell that she was currently doing so. The cells would begin to divide more rapidly in preparation for damage to come. The beginnings of the Wound Erasure technique. With that, her legs would be surrounded in a pink, fleshy muscular tissue and she would bound forward at her maximum speed toward Kennosuke. Those ten meters were more than enough to place her only inches away from the dark haired shinobi, though she would stop herself three meters away from his position. Before that dash even completed, her arms would stretch forward with incredible speed, wrapping around Kennosuke and whipping him rapidly downward so that he would land against the ground. The location she had tossed him toward was relatively close to the location of the weapons they had discarded moments ago, five meters to the right of his ninjato. If this attack were met with success, the unfortunate shinobi would find himself fracturing a bone or two.

It was a very quick maneuver, something she hadn’t had much opportunity to make use of in the exams, so it was worth an attempt in a more relaxed setting. Whether her attempt was successful or not, Ting would ready herself for the arrival of a follow up attack from her opponent, not willing to be caught off guard or let herself get comfortable. One should never underestimate a shinobi of the Hidden Leaf Village.

Ting reached into her ninja pouch and took out a pair of spiked gloves, before tossing them over to land near Rekka. As the small dust cloud the gloves stirred settled, Kennosuke focused on his opponent. The girl before him seemed to be readying herself for an attack. Pink muscular material wrapped around her legs and she burst forward with such speed Kennosuke could barely react. If he hadn't of been ready for it, she would of nailed him.

Just as she begins to move toward him, jets of fire appear in various spots across the front of his body, pushing him backwards 10 meters from his starting point at a speed of 15m/s, dragging his feet acrosd the ground making a trail of dust arise. Thanks to Burning Ambition, he was clear of her attack and once at 10 meters his direction changes suddenly. The jets appear on his back and boost him forward 5 meters at an upward angle, the momentum left would send him sailing over top Ting.

During the backwards motion he inhaled deeply, kneading that air with Katon chakra in his lungs and as soon as the jets stop pushing him forward and he is carried by momentum alone he unleashes a 5 meter fireball at Ting that would travel at 20 m/s and would leave minor second degree burns on exposed skin and first degree burns on covered skin if it hit.

As he sailed over the spot Ting last was, he would use Burning Ambition to spin in the air, facing where he last saw her while flying backwards through the air. This girl was fast, but he could match that speed. His emerald eyes would study the scene before him as he already began to think about his next move. He lands right around where Ting had originally started and slides to a stop, waiting for the next attack.

The quickmoving Kennosuke would jettison himself backwards at high speeds in an effort to evade the grasp of Ting’s extended arms. He miscalculated only slightly, the Kunoichi grinning as she felt her arms wrap around him and toss him with immense force toward the ground near the place in which the two had discarded their weaponry. While in the act of delivering her attack her opponent would produce a massive ball of fire, sending it forward in retaliation. It was going to impact her directly if she didn’t act quickly. With almost instinctual reaction, Ting activated her Windhole technique, blasting forward and creating a comical looking cutout in the large fire orb, shaped just as she had been posed when she leapt through it. Having landed on the ground hard due to the trebuchet technique, Kennosuke would have fractured whatever landed upon the ground first and second. It appeared that it would end up being something on his left side but in her act of avoiding the scorch of her life, she wouldn’t get a clear visual on how her technique had played out in full.

Ting wouldn’t allow the spot decision making to deter her, using the seventeen meters per second forward momentum of the windhole technique combined with agility to travel toward the location of Kennosuke’s landing and leveling a non-jutsu enhanced knee to his face before he could rise back to his feet. Should the blindingly fast follow up have landed, the crowd gathered around would groan out as their stomachs cringed at the sight of her knee breaking Kennosuke’s nose. Before these exams, before things had gone south for Ting she would have been hesitant about striking so mercilessly at a foe. It was only now that she had experienced loss at the hands of hesitation that she refused to hold back any longer. Sakamoto had made a fool of her on that battlefield because she hadn’t been at the top of her game. It would not happen again. Should the young man have evaded her knee, she would have had two glass senbon readied in her left hand to throw at him. One of the two would be aimed for his carotid artery, the other for his left thigh where Ting would have guessed she could find his femoral artery. Either way she would return to readiness for any retaliation, keeping her mouth shut as she was not the sort to mock a worthy adversary.

Feeling his opponents arms wrap around him, Kennosuke cursed himself slightly. He had thought he moved enough to be safe and would soon pay for his mistake. With immense force he is hurled to the ground and lands with a solid thud on his left side. The force of which likely fractured his left wrist and collar bone, but he couldn’t tell one way or the other. In a quick motion, he regains his feet under him and is a low crouch before he realizes she was already coming at him for another attack and was moving too fast for him to completely dodge. Jets from his Burning Ambition ignite across his chest and feet, pushing him backwards just as her knee connects with his face. The blow which would of likely broke his nose succeeded in bloodying it. Arching his back away from her he plants his hands on the ground and launches a foot aimed at her chin and with the aid of his Burning Ambition his foot was traveling at 15 meters per second. If the blow landed or not made little difference to Kennosuke as he completes his flip and lands back on his feet, blood streaming from his nostrils. He grinned as he leaned over and spit blood onto the dirt.

“This..This is going to be fun.” He says to his opponent as he wipes the blood from his face with the back of his hand. Originally he had tossed Rekka aside thinking she didn’t have weapons of her own but after she had tossed her Spiked gloves aside too, Kennosuke couldn’t help but think of how the fight would go if they both had their full equipment. He bends down and grabs her gloves and tosses them across the ring to her. “If we’re gonna do this, let’s do it for real. No holding back.” He says to her. He waits for her to pull the gloves on before he tucks his toe under his sheathed sword and kicks it into the air. Raiton erupts from the finger tips on his left hand and he fires tennis ball sized pellets of Raiton chakra at Ting. He fired five ‘rounds’ at her before his right hand wraps around the hilt of his sword as it falls next to him. The blade comes free of its sheath and he bursts forward, discharging another five ‘pellets’ at her. Once inside 10 meters the jets of Burning Ambition ignite along his back, propelling him forward to her, closing the gap with blinding speed. Once within melee range, he discharges the last five pellets at point blank range, aimed at her face while he swings his sword low aiming to slice at her thigh.

The satisfying sound of a successful attack, the impacting thud and small cracks which followed were telltale signs of significsnt injury. As Ting rushed forward to follow up she would strike forth with her knee, meeting his nose as intended, but consequently being engulfed in a lesser blaze as he retreated. The kunoichi would pay out the flames on her shorts and clench her teeth at the stinging sensation brought upon her knee by the bite of fire. The burns would fade into nothing quickly, her flesh returning to health as rapidly dividing cells restored her. Kennosuke had hardly hesitated following what should have been somewhat debilitating fractures to his wrist and collarbone. This was enough to make a life-long medic like Ting know something was pushing him beyond the limitations of pain. But what?

As her opponent tossed her gloves over to her and spoke, Ting would only become a bit more concerned for him, and more curious as to what sort of person she was dealing with. Nose streaming blood, redness and swelling along his collar and wrist, her opponent seemed not even realize his state. She would slide her left glove on as she returned conversation.

Are you sure? There is no need to push things too far, your bones won’t likely forgive you for it...” She expressed genuine concern laced with a small desire to learn what it was that allowed him to persist through fractures. As she spoke, still adjusting her left glove, she would take a deep breath - the signaling the beginning of the Seven Heavens Breathing Method. She wouldn’t wait around any longer after this as she slid her other glove on, signaling Kennosuke’s launch of several fast moving raiton bullets.

With even further enhanced mobility, Ting would duck low, bending her body backwards as though playing limbo in order to allow the five projectiles to sail just passed her face. Likewise, she would watch him unsheathe his sword and evade the next volley, the spacing of which were too predictable and easily avoided at this distance. It was the perfect distraction, however. When Ting recovered from her second dodge, a simple side step, Kennosuke has launched himself forward across the gap between them. At point blank range, the hazel eyed kunoichi  was assaulted by shocking pain across her right arm and one searing zap against her neck. If she hadn’t raised her arm defensively as she saw him launch forth, there would have been far worse damage to deal with - the jutsu targeting her face.  First degree burns which would irritate and cause her to cringe, healed away by the last light of her Wound Erasure technique as they occurred.

His swift slash at her thigh would not be able to be answered for by anything she had available, and so she would instead take the opportunity of her inevitable pain to retaliate. Her still readied left hand would clench, spikes prepared to taste blood as she activated the agezuki technique and brought her fist upwards with Herculean might. The agonizing tear of the flesh of her right thigh would drive her attack onward, her teeth clenched heavy. Should the lightning fast agezuki uppercut make contact with her adversary, it would be aimed in line with his chin and the underside of his jaw. Spikes would tear deep into his flesh, one piercing the Back of his throat, the rest impaling his tongue in several locations and then the force of Agezuki itself dislodging teeth and spinning back his head with enough force to rattle the brain against the skull. It was a knockout strike moving at twenty meters per second at point blank range.

Her words had been lost to Kennosuke. He heard her voice, sure, but the words were like a breeze on the wind and now that he in her boots so to speak, they didn’t matter anyway. The satisfactory sizzle of his Shock bullets leaving scorch marks on her skin filled his ears, even if the marks faded nearly as quickly as they appeared. The slash to her thigh however left a nice 1.5 inch gash. Not a debilitating cut, but that just means he would have to keep trying. She gave no pause, even though the pain was clear on her face and he could hear the leather glove on her hand cry out as she clenched her fist tighter just before she swung a massive uppercut. At this range, with the speed that hand was going there was no way he could dodge it or protect himself with a Jutsu. He had one option. He took a deep breath, filling his lungs with air and infusing the air with chakra.

His left hand met her uppercut, her spiked gloves piercing straight through his palm and coming out the backside of his hand. She was stronger than he, especially with her Chakra driven attack so all he could do was push her hand away slightly so it would veer off course and miss the spot she was aiming for and with it the Knockout blow. With his hand impaled on her glove, blood flowing freely down her hand and arm, he was pretty well stuck on her until she finished the movement of the uppercut, which at its height a very audible crack could be heard as his already fractured wrist snapped due to the force of her attack. There was a moment as soon as her attack finished when there was a silence in the crowd, as they were stunned at the violence they just witnessed and at Kennosuke for not even flinching at his hand being totally demolished. He grinned at her, his hand still impaled on her fist and exhaled the breath he had taken before the blow landed. While invisible to the naked eye there was a distinct noxious odor that filled the air around them.

“Ain’t nothing but a scratch.” He says to her and rips his hand free, blood flying every which way. He slashes at her twice, one an upward diagonal slash aimed at her arm that she had used to punch him and the second a downward slash aimed at her right shoulder. He would then jump backwards, the jets of Burning Ambition igniting and carrying him straight back 15 Meters at 15 meters per second. Not only did his Burning Ambition put some needed space between the two of them, it also ignited the Misty Flame Dance jutsu he had used during her attack, sending the area he was just in up in a 5 meter fireball that would leave first degree burns if his opponent was inside the radius.

Having missed her mark by fractions of a second, Ting would watch in horror as her opponent intercepted her agezuki with his injured left hand, allowing the spikes to pierce through his palm unimpeded. The lack of reaction to such a grievous  wound and the snap of his wrist lead Ting to immediately suspect something was afoot. She was now frustrated, and in those few moments of frustration she made the call to end the games. In her mind, it had to be some sort of technique granting him such a tolerance for pain, or lack of pain sensations altogether. Just before Kennosuke could attempt his two follow up slices, the frustrated kunoichi would send forth a chakra reverse pulse meant to disrupt anything he had working up his sleeves. The wave itself was quick moving and should it have slammed into Kennosuke he would find his active techniques disrupted. When he attempted to make use of them in addition to bruising across the impact location.

Ting would knock aside his blade with the back of her free hand as he attempted the first slice with her enhanced reactive capability provided by her Breathing Method, following up with her own strike aimed for his right lung. He was certain he would feel it now and even if he didn’t, having the air knocked out of you with such force was bad enough without several spikes puncturing it. The crackle strike was much like the agezuki strike, only faster. Her fist would reach his chest at a speed of twenty-five meters per second. She was ruthless and forward, having learned from her mistakes of the past. She sought victory without mercy.

Please go down. Your injuries are becoming too severe. You’ll cause permanent damage if you persist.” She would say, whether her follow up was successful or not. Whether or not her punch would land she would enter a defensive stance to prepare for any follow up, observing her opponent carefully. Her warning was serious, though. She could see all sorts of complications arising from so much bleeding and exertion on the body. The nasty gored hand seemed to etch into her mind, so many red flags flashing out to her medical expertise. She could only imagine how long it would take to patch him back up, even with potent medical techniques these injuries were nothing to ignore. He would likely need a combination of chakra based reparation and standard healing methods to recover.

Kennosuke thought he would be able to put space between them. He thought wrong. Just before he could move, he was hit with a shockwave that effectively halted his Jutsu and knocked him backwards, throwing him slightly off balance. The after effects of Burning Ambition made it feel like he could barely move and he was utterly left to her whim now. She would knock away his now feeble attempt to slice at her and moves in for another attack. There was nothing he could even attempt to deny the swift attack aimed at his right side.

Spiked gloves meet soft flesh, easily piercing through his chest and puncturing his right lung, while the sheer force of the blow was enough to fracture his ribs. He staggers backward and crumples to the ground, his knees buckling under his own weight. He sat there on his knees gasping for air, his chest heaving as his muscles involuntarily react to the damage he had sustained. He takes a deep, ragged breath and looks up at his opponent, a grin plastered across his face despite the damage He had taken.

"I'm damaged goods anyway." His words came between labored breaths. He sets the tip of his blade into the dirt and uses his sword to help him raise to his feet, though it appeared his legs could barely support his body weight. "We'll have to do this again sometime. Next time we wont have the same outcome, I promise you that. Take care." He says as he staggers forward toward, Rekka held loosely in his hand, pausing next to Ting. "Was a good fight. Victory is yours." He would say, not waiting for a response before walking away. He waves off the awaiting medics and staggers into the street, determined to return to the Kimura Compound with his feet under him and since he couldn't feel the severity of his wounds, he would do just that. He was certainly a sight to behold, blood dripping from a mangled hand and running freely from his chest.

Her blows would meet their mark, her opponent halted in place by her usage of the chakra reverse pulse to keep him from escaping. As she met flesh with her spiked gloves she would cringe slightly, feeling his ribs crack beneath the force and knowing she had punctured his right lung. It was all according to plan, but sometimes a plan is easier to stomach in ones mind than in practice. She would watch as Kennosuke knelt to the ground, suffering not from any sort of pain even still. He had fallen to his own blood loss and breathlessness. And even so, he was attempting to stand himself up and walk away while his pride wouldn’t allow him to hear her words.

She knew well the pang one felt in their heart when they were met with defeat. Sakamoto had made a fool of her on the worlds stage. Defeated by a small feline after climbing the rings as high as she would go. It was that experience that had lead to her dropping from the losers bracket and making her way to the administration building where she had applied for her promotion to chunin. She had come to the realization that victory and defeat in a setting of one on one combat was not truly telling of a kunoichi’s skill. This was a society of warriors meant to perform all manner of services for their homeland, sanctioned one on one battles were not something a shinobi would experience often in their lives, and certainly weren’t something anyone should take to heart.

Slow your ass down, Kennosuke. You’re going to collapse on the ground any moment now. Swallow your pride and let me help you on your way. Where are you headed?” She would say with a level of demand as she waved away the businessman from earlier who was calling out to her. He had a swarm of crowding onlookers to sell to now. She had completed her end of the bargain. Ting would slide under kennosuke’s arm and allow him to lean his weight on her as they made their way toward wherever it was this shinobi called home. The two would have much to discuss along the way, especially when Ting realized they were reaching the Kimura Compound.
