Haka Osada

Stepping into the massive room that was Sero's armoury, the little metamorphosed wolf spider's eyes slowly glided over the entire area. It was here that Sero had brought her to show why humans, the inferior species predominantly inhabiting this world, had been so successful. The countless weapons in all forms and shapes that were displayed here were, in his eyes, his pride as a weapon master, but, in the eyes of the spider, seemed more like trophies gathered to show what a great hunter he was. He had told Haka back then that these weapons were the 'claws of man', products given shape to surpass any adversary possibly crossing his path. Haka, on the other hand, refused to believe in such a foolish pride. Man was an unevolved species in need of additional, external tools to get where it wanted to be. A species too weak to rely on its own natural weapons.

Yet, the kunai Sero had given her had been the first contact with Man's claws. Even if she was unaware that its quality was of a lesser degree than most other tools he had sheltered in this armoury, it had easily cut into her trying finger to draw blood. Though she disliked the thought these tools could be better than her own arachnid fangs and venom, she was not so foolish as to believe ignoring its existence would be a healthy thing. With Sero urging her to discover what 'humanity' entailed, she was bound to meet with humans at some point, and thus with their claws. If anything, the very least she would have to do is to discover the reason of existence of every weapon created and stored in here and how to protect herself against it. Once she could deny their utility, Man would be nothing more but dull prey to play with.

Slowly walking through the armoury, Haka took her jolly good time to observe the displays one by one, making full circle around the armoury before she would decide on which weapon to examine more properly. She would eventually examine them all, but even an Unmei as small as her could not wield all of the weapons at once. As she walked through the armoury, she noticed every one of them had been provided with a peculiar seal. A seal she recognised well, as the kunai she carried had the same symbol etched in it. It was a symbol she had been told to study, and that ultimately had allowed her to learn how to make the kunai appear and disappear anytime she fed it a small portion of her chakra. Sero's mark. What it's exact purpose was, she could not tell. The wolf spider simply considered it to be his personal seal, and thus seeing it on every other weapon and armour displayed in this place simply told her all of these 'claws' where his to use.

Finishing her personal tour through the armoury, Haka eventually decided to pick up a short sword and a long sword. The two weapons were similar, of course, as one was just a bigger version of the small one, but to the Unmei the need to create both versions was still but a mystery. Why would Man bother to make two different shapes when even a kunai could cut through flesh? Were these crafted for the various sizes of Man? Kunai for kids, short swords for small people and long swords for tall people? That seemed logic enough as it were, but her perceptive nature didn't quite agree. The short sword felt clearly lighter, and its reach was obviously shorter. Whereas the long sword seemed to give her some trouble wielding it properly, the short sword was ideal in weight were it not for the fact she had no interest in using it for herself. Deciding the leave the long sword for what it was, Haka placed the blade back where she had found it and took a closer look at the short sword instead. Much like her kunai, it was sharpened and though she knew what would happen if she ran her thumb over it, the spider could not resist the urge to test out its sharpness. The short sword too cut into her thumb with little resistance, forcing colourless blood to well up.

Much like she had attempted with her kunai, Haka stabbed in the air with the short sword, remarking the distinct difference in the weapon's reach, balance and weight. It felt too heavy to her liking to proceed stabbing with this sword when the kunai she owned was much lighter, agile and easier to wield. Not to mention that the kunai was easy to throw around, a quality she believed was not shared by the sword. Instead, she swung it around several times with the expertise of an untrained swordsman - slow and rather clumsily. When she had finished doing so, she placed the short sword back in its place as well, her mind storing its qualities in a mental archive before she proceeded to another weapon in Sero's arsenal.

As if the long and short sword wasn't enough, the armoury harboured various other sword styles as well. Katana, wakizashi, nodachi, to name a couple of the eastern themed ones. Naturally, the wolf spider in disguise picked them up, comparing them to the traditional swords she had been trying out before. The weight and balance generally differed, but she found their principal way of handling all the same and quickly stacked their qualities on top of the long sword as she placed them back. Dao, miao dao, yari. When Haka took note of the yari, she halted a moment. A sword on a stick was an odd thing to see and didn't seem to fall within the category of swords at first sight.

Picking up the yari, she placed it next to her and trailed the pole upwards and above her own head. The pole looked simple enough, and even its spearhead looked nothing out of the extraordinary compared to the basic swords she had been looking at. Lowering it and holding it in both her hands, the yari felt light but clumsy in her hands, and at first Haka could not imagine such a weapon to be used properly. Swinging it easily brought her out of balance, making her drop the yari on the floor with a clattering sound. For a moment she quietly stared at the yari on the floor, unmoving, as her mind tried to figure out the puzzle that was the yari. Obviously, stabbing would work, but if that was its only use, sghe considered it a rather poor weapon. Still, Haka picked the yari back up and thrusted at an invisible enemy. It had range as a quality, that was certain. And perhaps, if she stuck it in the ground, she could even vault over things with it. The thought triggering a domino effect as a spark of genius lit up her mind, the spider jumped up and twisted her body so her feet would hit the ceiling. Yari still in hand, she pulled it back, looking down on the floor, and as she noticed the potential of crawling down along a strand of webbing with such a weapon in hand, she fully understood how easily the yari could kill from a distance. Satisfied with her conclusions, Haka dropped down and placed the yari back in place, proceeding to the next set of weapons.

What followed were even more swords. Flamberge, rapier (a tall needle?), and the two-handed versions of previously seen weapons followed up, leaving Haka perplexed at what use there was in the creation of so many different swords. Even if some changes mattered on balance, weight and reach, some of the other variations simply felt redundant and left the spider confused about their utility. Eventually, she approached a set of sticks - rattan sticks - and stopped. As her eyes registered their presence, her mind was at a complete loss why humans would use sticks as a weapon. That is, if they were supposed to be weapons. Picking up the set of sticks, Haka eyed them carefully but did not succeed at getting the idea why humans would use sticks to hunt their prey. As a last attempt, she knocked one against the walls, only to hear a bright toc. She tried it once more, and got the same result, upon which she ultimately decided to rapidly knock them against the walls for several times.

Toc-toc-toc-toc-toc-toc. She found it mind-boggling... How humans could make such useless weapons and be proud about it.

Placing the sticks back, the next set of weapons were much like the swords. Long sticks, short sticks, thick sticks, T-sticks... The nonsense creativity of humanity seemed to know no limit, falling back time and time again on various shapes and variations of the previous two sticks she had held in her hands. Granted, beating up someone with a stick was probably much in line with beating someone up with a sword, and to some extend the range some long sticks provided was of the same sort of advantage as the swords, but where Haka could understand the usefulness of a sword's cutting and piercing power, bludgeoning someone to death seemed like a complete waste of time.

Then came the nunchaku and the sansetsukon. Respectively, two sticks and three sticks with chains between them. The wolf spider picked up the nunchaku, eyeing it with mild suspicion. The weapon seemed more interesting than any of the other sticks she had seen, but their use still eluded her. Even after swinging it, upon which the loose stick flailed about without purpose, she could unfortunately not grasp its use and thus decided that stick weapons were complete nonsense which only proved how unevolved the Human species was. How the creation of useless 'claws' helped them in becoming the dominant species on this world... One could only guess.

To think Sero's vault contained even more weapons, Haka could only wonder where Humans got the inspiration for all these. After the swords and the staves came the throwing weapons. Kunai, knives, shuriken, windmill shuriken... Different shapes and sizes for different purposes, but at least she recognised the kunai both as a stabbing tool and a light object to throw. The ring at the end, so she had realised, was an ideal loop to attach chakra strings, wires or webbing, but other throwing weapons didn't have any of those. Picking up a shuriken, she eyed the metal star and its cutting edges, registering it as an obvious throwing tool. While she held it out in front of her, her gaze shifted to the larger windmill shuriken, and back to the smaller shuriken in her hand. They were similar, but not quite. The windmill shuriken looked too heavy for her to carry, and too clumsy to throw in a similar fashion than the shuriken. So as she put the shuriken back in place, she analysed the larger variant in hopes to be able to figure out how it was supposed to work.

Unfortunately, she would not be able to do so as the windmill shuriken suddenly vanished from sight, leaving a circle of odd symbols for a brief moment before these vanished as well. Unsure as what was happening, the young spider merely stared at the former position of the windmill shuriken. The symbols had looked quite similar in style to the ones used for sealing and unsealing, yet they were not exactly 'that technique'. Squating and resting her arms over her knees, Haka remained in that position for quite some time until the large shuriken returned in the same way as it had disappeared - with symbols around it, and fresh blood dripping of it. Red blood, at that. Haka dipped her finger in the blood, bringing it closer to her eyes. It was a curious discovery to find this blood was not colourless as hers, but being unable to relate it to humans just yet, she licked it off her finger and stood back up. The sharp taste of blood lingered in her mouth, making her think about the fountain the head servant had shown her. Was this human blood? Possibly, but only a little experiment on one of the human residence of Sero's manor would be able to say for sure.

Leaving the subjects of blood and experiments for what they were, Haka decided she had discovered enough for one day. The mysteries that had revealed themselves within her hands required some time to be understood. Some of them would not take long, but others would require her to find a couple of humans who could show her how they were used. As Haka left the armoury, she wondered where exactly she'd find a human willing to fight with sticks.
