Ryuusei

D-rank
No. 52, Takayama Kiyoshi.

A name and a number, even with the briefing and thick manila folder full of information on the target, his name and number were the pieces of information that seared themselves into Ryuusei’s mind. The fact that all of his targets had a corresponding number told the man that they likely came from some sort of hit-list in the possession of his employers. There was little strategy or reason behind the order in which the names were delivered to him; not once had he ever received them in numerical order. There were no alliances between them and the fact that his next target never seemed to be hyper-aware of his dealings told him that they were not connected in a way that would show itself if he were taking out pieces of some larger organization one by one.

The liaison between Ryuusei and his employers always had a great deal of information on the subject, almost all of which that was shared with the fair-haired man relating to the task at hand. But the big picture, what the ultimate goal was, or why these people in particular? That information was never deemed necessary to share with the hired help. After the first few jobs, Ryuusei got the picture and simply stopped asking. Ultimately the reasons behind it were irrelevant, as it would not change the outcome either way. There was nothing that would be stopping him from upholding his end of the deal. The fact that all of these people that he was being paid to deal with also happened to be rotten to the core was simply a bonus. Just like the others, no one would be missing this man when he was gone.

The preparations had been made by his contact for him to move on with the task. A small motorboat had been left tied down to a section of the coast completely void of commercial traffic. Kozushima village received so much traffic because it was the lone gap on that coast where ships could dock without fear of having their hulls torn to shreds by the jagged rocks lurking just beneath the waves. For most sailors, navigating the coast of this isle in the Land of Water was no different than sinking your own ship. The number of dangerous rock outcroppings was likely only matched at this point by the number of sunken ships claimed by these treacherous waters. Ryuusei, however, was hardly a proper sailor, and far from the normal foreign captain sailing unknown seas. The fair-haired man had cut his teeth sailing makeshift rafts on the outskirts of Kozushima. By the time he was 16 years old he had mapped half of the island’s coast, knowledge that came in quite handy when one needed to make a discreet escape from the shore.

A hard yank preceded the sputtering of an aging motor which rumbled beneath Ryuusei’s feet, shaking the whole vessel as it burned through fuel. The boat had certainly seen better days, but in his line of work, as long as it got him from point A to point B, the more pedestrian looking the vehicle the better. No one would give a beat up old dingy like this a second look, and more importantly, no one would be missing out when he let it sink to the bottom of the sea. With the sound of the engine running signaling the vessel’s readiness for departure, Ryuusei cut cleanly through the taught rope with the edge of his knife, freeing him to begin. From the driver’s seat the man recounted his map, tracing the safe path to the open sea in his mind. Thrusting the boat forward, his destination became the sole objective on his mind. The place where his target laid his head, the Land of Earth.
