The snow-white haired boy with the colour of pecan brown eyes remained seated in a tree, peaceful and undisturbed with a book in his hand – a comic book – and a homemade packed bento in his lap. Every now and then he would tear his eyes away from the boxes of colours to the gentle flow of the sparkly water. The crashing of the water against the rocks resonance a calm within him rarely found anywhere else. Even though he may not agree with the many aspects associated with his clan, he can see why the Naka river is favoured. His almond eyes glanced downwards at the water to observe his reflection, a smile sneaked up on his face. He had grown so much; there was a time when he didn’t have a shinobi forehead protector, a time where he wasn’t proud to trek along these paths. But now things have changed.

From here, he could see the rising sun, the flow of the river slipping into the deep revine like a gentle lullaby. A ironic chuckle slipped out of his mouth…the Naka River…the river of southern joy. There was a time when he despised the irony of that name, for he only understood that his clan consisted of nothing but hatred. But now, in the tranquillity of the place he understood why the river was gifted with such a name.

He arched his back and stretched out his lazy legs with the groaning trees, the leaves danced in the breeze with morning elegance. He sighed and returned his attention to his comic, his hand reached out to pick out a piece of cucumber from his breakfast bento. He ignored the tickling of his sleek white hair against his cheek bones and continued to lose himself in the stories of the comic book he read. It is called “SAGA” a story about a family escaping an intergalactic war.

A small boy walking along the edge of the river holding his right shoulder with his left hand, his blonde hair blowing in the wind as his world was coming apart. Dragging his blade along the ground as he seemed a bit out of place, as his heart was wavering he looked cold and heartless as he continued along the river bank. His barefeet pressing softly on the grass as a few animals watched him, the world around him had become different since he looked at it through the eyes of a sage in training. He was becoming one with nature and he was beginning to feel the weight of all his actions as he then stopped to clean his sword in the river as it flowed washing away the blood that travelled along the river.

The boy then looked up and noticed something in the tree as he held on to his blade tightly as he swung the clean blade the water flying through the air as some of it shot towards the tree harmlessly but to the point that whoever was there would get wet, as the water was flying towards the boy sparkling in a sense that it made a small little rainbow for a moment. He noticed the boy had white hair, and strange brown eyes not to mention some weird book which had 'SAGA' written on it. Who was this stranger in the tree and was he an enemy or an ally or neither, it was hard for the boy to tell the difference anymore as his heart began to beat loudly. A voice inside his head that kept saying, "Kill, kill, kill, kill" while another voice inside him said, "Lay down your sword for peace". Either way only time would tell who or what this person was as he kept a close eye on him.

Masaaki’s eyes continued to follow the comic bubbles of his book, marvelling at the storytelling and the vibrant colours. He can’t help but wonder if he could’ve been something other than shinobi, he always thought he can be comic writer if his dream of being shinobi was never fulfilled. He caught movement at the corner of his eyes that interrupted his quiet reading time for just a brief moment; he looked in the direction of the river and spotted a young boy. The child appears to be ten or eleven years old. Masaaki frowned, the child looks rather…deflated. Troubled by something.

He noticed with alarm the bloody sword that the child began to clean through the river, did something happen? ‘It’s not really my problem…’ pondered the kid, but he can’t just sit and do nothing. But then again it looks like a situation he best stay out of. Either way it didn’t matter since the jounin saw him and stared blankly at him.

Masaaki didn’t say anything at first, he isn’t good with strangers. Especially weird creepy little kids. “Err…hi.” Greeted Masaaki as he put down his comic book. “You look like you’ve been to hell and back.” Teased Masaaki with a toothy grin. And then he paused, sheepishly he rubbed the back of his head. “I’m err, not good with strangers but I’m Masaaki.” Said the boy as he introduced himself.

And then he grabbed his bento and dropped off the tree, he contemplated what he should do next. Offer food? It seemed like a safe bet. “Would you like some chicken? My bentos are not that great but its tasty enough.” Said the genin as he offered out the last half of the bento packed with cucumbers, pieces of chicken breast and brown rice.

The boy answered him nervously with a greeting as he put down his book as the boy kept looking at the other boy. The boy told him he looked like he had been to hell and part of that was true, but in that sense the hell was his domain, as he was a little demon of the hidden mist, but this boy did not seem to even know who he was. The kid must have been a fresh genin straight out of Konoha's academy. The grin on the boy's face was really creepy as Yuzu just did not understand why the boy could not just give a normal smile. The boy then rubbed the back of his head and said his name was Masaaki as he looked the boy up and down making sure he had no hidden weapons on him.

The boy finally came down from the tree with what looked like a bento, he had always wanted to try one of those and he got lucky though. The boy offered him some chicken as he stared at it for a while before slashing it in half with his sword then caught the other half as he held it up then said, "I am Yuzu, and lets eat at the same time so we know that it is not poison okay" not the best logic in the world but he was really hungry and felt this was the safest idea he had on him. So now he was waiting patiently for the other boy Masaaki to eat the other half, though he probably should be more careful since for a second he nearly cut the hand of the boy, if he did not hold back at the last second. He put the sword on to his back.

The wind began to pick up as he wondered whether this would be a new friend that he would make, or just another enemy not that he needed enemies to begin with. The world was against him in so many ways and he had trained so hard to be treated to harsh gazes and even harsher rumors. The one truth was that he was strong and had no time to waste.

He blinked in surprise when Yuzu suddenly slashed the chicken in half. He stared at him, confused and amused. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips, how particular does this boy seems. “Yuzu huh?” repeated Masaaki, making sure he read the boy’s lips correctly. If not, Yuzu can always correct him. He laughed as Yuzu said he wanted them to eat together so he knows it isn’t poison. But he was serious. “Oh you’re serious?” but that only made Masaaki grin even more, so he took a bite out of his own chicken chewed it up and swallowed it. A few seconds more he fake-fainted and pretended to foam at the mouth.

And then he stopped and grinned childishly “Just kidding, it isn’t poisoned. Although I do apologise in advance if you vomit, my cooking isn’t that good.” He was being modest; he actually does cook quite well for his age. He is part of a family of five after all and someone has to cook. He sat back up, crossed his legs and looked up at the youngster. “You’re not very well socialised are you Yuzu?” pointed out Masaaki as if it was a fact.

“And you’re definitely not from around these parts. That sword is like a big screaming siren.” But he didn’t care that much, Yuzu’s defensiveness and wariness brought out the prankster in him. He knew what it feels not to trust people or be wary of others, and he might not yet know how harsh the world can be but he got a taste for it just by staying within the walls of the fire nation.

The boy had a smile on his face which confused him a bit, the boy did not seem to be scared of him and did not seem like a threat either. Masaaki laughed at him when he asked them to eat at the same time, to make sure it was not poison. When he grinned it looked suspicious, like a smile but with deeper meaning. He watched Masaaki's lips closely as Masaaki took a bite out of the chicken, chewing it up before eventually swallowing it. He also took a bite and was busy chewing when he noticed Masaaki foaming from the mouth as he spat out the chicken only to notice he was grinning. He blushed cutely as he felt embarrassed that he fell for that, he was being really careless right now. The voices in his head started speaking again telling him to kill this liar and make him pay for making a fool out of him, but another voice said that there is still hope, he must not let go of it.

The joke was not that nice but at least they were both okay, he began eating the chicken as he listened to the boy saying he was bad at cooking, he did think the chicken was missing something he just could not figure out what it was at the time. He had cooking experience which mainly centered around noodles, noodles and more noodles, with salads deserts and cake included.
The boy said he was not well socialized which confused him and he thought for a bit that it probably meant unsociable which meant something or other that he forgot.

He then looked to the boy Masaaki and put his sword down on the ground then opened his mouth very slowly. "That joke was a bit mean Masaaki..." giving the boy a cute feminine pouty face as he looked to the side, he was actually very sociable but the world kept pulling back to the harsh realities of war hunger and bloodshed. Now was a more important time than any other to make a friend, especially with what the future now holds

Masaaki didn’t feel apologetic or guilty at all, instead he only flashed a grin at the younger boy.  “Oh come on, you act like it’s the first time a joke been played on you.” He teased relentlessly, the harshness of his words lessened by his friendly smile.  He got the impression that Yozu isn’t used to having a little bit of fun or seemed quite too guarded for his own good, in the genin’s eyes the only way to bypass such defences is to act like a clown.

He picked up a couple of stone and threw them at the river, the rocks skipped across the tranquil water leaving behinds ripples that would later turn into tides or so Masaaki believed, it was a silly to believe in. But all actions have consequences don’t they? Even the big bang was caused by something or another, he knew that because he read it in a book somewhere, and it got him thinking about what caused the cause of the big bang itself? And if there is a cause how did the original come into being? It’s a complex theory, and one that baffles him
And not something that is on his mind right now.

“So where are you from?” asked the genin curiously, his face still fixed on the river. His brown eyes looked almost copper gold in the radiating sun rays. He remained quiet for a few moments before he looked over his shoulder, a half-smile on his face. “Or am I better off not knowing?” he asked cheerfully, revealing that he have a feeling Yozu isn’t at all what he appears.

Not surprising, given the sword was a big give away.

“Bah.” Said Masaaki as he put his arms behind his head, stretching out with a yawn. “You don’t have to tell me, I’m not particularly concerned.” It’s his day off after all, and as far as he understands, Yozu is just a boy he met at the river. Nothing more, nothing less. Just a kid he’s having fun talking to. “Do you like my chicken then?” asked Masaaki.

It was not his first time, but when it came to sarcasm or jokes in general he felt like a virgin. Even though he did not understand the true meaning of the word, he always knew that he was a virgin in this world, except when it came to killing and doing missions. He watched as the boy Misaaki picked up a few stones and threw them towards the river, they seemed to skip by nicely as he wondered if he should join in as he picked up a few stones trying to decide whether to throw them or not.

He picked up a couple of stone and threw them at the river, the rocks skipped across the tranquil water leaving behinds ripples that would later turn into tides or so Masaaki believed, it was a silly to believe in. The boy asked him where he was from before he could throw his stone as he pouted a bit, upset that he did not get a chance to throw his stones yet. The boy then asked if it was even okay to ask where he came from in the first place as he now had a different look, as the young boy Yuzu had his eyes looking down as he felt that it might actually be true, after some of the things that happened. The rumor of his mother having a fight with the Hokage, which he felt were probably just rumors since if she did fight the Hokage she would probably kill him by accident.

His train of thought got interrupted as Masaaki just made a strange noise which might have been a word for all he knew, as the boy put his arms behind his head which made it look like the day had only begun for Masaaki. He then asked about the chicken as he was in thought for a bit then finally spoke. "I am from the Hidden Mist, we sometimes eat rabbits there so chicken is a bit weird to me sometimes. Am i being a bother to you?" as he tilted his head slightly as he questioned Masaaki before flicking the stone which he might have overdone as the stone bounced off the water it made a large splash as the water went towards the both of them. It was just water but in the end he was not sure if getting wet was a good idea or a bad idea. However he did have some feminine charm to him as the wave was heading towards them a mini rainbow from the drops that were falling from this wave.

Masaaki observed Yuzu from the side, amused by the puzzled look on the boy’s face. As if debating if he should throw something as small and insignificant as a little stone rock. “It’s not going to bite you.” He teased, encouraging the younger boy to have a little bit of fun.
The eyes of a deaf individual is much sharper than someone with hearing, since deaf individuals have to rely on their eyesight with greater capacity than a able bodied person it means they pick up on subtle things more than the average person, like a missing button, a loose string, subtle give away of facial expression. In Yuzu’s case it would be Masaaki noticing that he is annoying the boy with his persistence. Obviously he was readying himself to throw the pebble before Masaaki interrupted. Well timing isn’t his best feature.

“The hidden mist?” repeated Masaaki, awe-stuck that he’s actually speaking to a foreigner. “I want to travel to Iwagakure someday…actually I want to travel everywhere. From the summit of Kirigakure to the deserts of Suna!” exclaimed Masaaki, envisioning himself in the middle of the hot climate of Sunagakure, it is where his half-brother Neci is hailed from.

“Pff, you’ve been missing out then. Chicken is awesome! Although can’t say I have tasted rabbit that much…” said Masaaki sheepishly, the wide grin on his faces extending the corners of his mouth. But it faded slightly as Yuzu asked if he was bothering him, if anything that only made Masaaki scoff. “Nah, why do you say that?” questioned Masaaki. “It wasn’t like I was doing anything, just reading a comic called SAGA.” said Masaaki as he pulled out the rolled up comic book from his pocket “It’s a story about family escaping an intergalactic war, it’s really awesome and weird. Their daughter narrates it – in the future obviously – and there’s this bounty hunter called “The Will” who is hunting them alongside with his companion lying cat.” Masaaki seemed quite keen about this comic in question as he handed it over to Yuzu, compelling him to give it a small read just to see how wonderfully weird it is.

As he listened to the reply from Masaaki as the water converged overhead he was given the book which he protected by hugging it and bowing his head forward as the water crashed down on them both making them rather wet. The splash was a bit over board as the pebble reached the other side of the river hitting into a tree and leaving an indentation. As he moved his head slowly to look up to Masaaki, his eyes appeared as if they were crying the water dripping down his face as he then spoke. "Sorry, never did this stone throwing thing before". As he held the book close before checking it to see if it was okay, holding it out at arms length so the water from his hair would not drip on the book. "SAGA, is this like a bingo book for people like the ANBU, i never heard of SAGA before though"
Being unfamiliar with most comic books or novels, he mainly only read books on training, weapons, jutsu and other shinobi related topics. He kept looking at the book as he became curious as to what the contents were he looked towards Masaaki and then towards the book. He began to think about it for a while trying to figure out whether he should open it or not, it very well could be a well planned trap to seal him into the book so that he can be captured or it could just be an ordinary book. The thoughts running through his mind as the wind began to pick up bringing in some cold weather as the river kept flowing far more peaceful then it had been earlier. A few rabbits were running through the grass as if their presence was not even slightly bothered by the two boys. He felt confusion more than he felt fear, his fear being deeply burried and deeply overcome by his training. Things had begun to change as he began to reach out and grabbed the top of the corner of the cover of the book. He opened the book slowly and what he saw was something he never expected and something that made him question what made him so different from others.
This was not a book of shinobi, this was not a story about the vast multitudes of infinite jutsu out there or weapons of mass destruction it was, something else. As the boy looked in awe at the book turning the pages slowly and carefully before gulping and then looking towards Masaaki and asking. "What is this?"

Masaaki whipped his head back and forth, splashing streaks of water onto the dusty soil. He glanced down at the younger boy, who seems perplexed. The Uchiha just tipped his head to the side, a lofty smile curving upwards before he just covered the little scoff with the knuckle of his hands. He couldn’t hide his smile though. “It’s alright.” He answered, he was never much good at it either. It took him some time to learn how to accurately throne stones, it’s not that much different to throwing shurikens or kunais. Just requires calculation and precise aiming to make the stones bouce across the water, which is easier said than done. The times where he was so disappointed when he lost more than one peddle to the Naka river troubled him, because back then he was just a boy of six years old and the fact he couldn’t even do this simple game was a reminder of his weaknesses.

Yet look at him now, a shinobi in his own right.

His smile faded slightly, brows crossed. What is a shinobi? Is a shinobi someone who kills for the betterment of the many over the few? Is Shinobi an individual with power to alter the course of history? If so there has been many in the past, with grave consequences.

Truthfully, somewhere in the back of his mind Masaaki wondered if he had the makings of a ninja. The thought ails him still like a black hound that will not cease the nipping at his heels.
Lost in his musings he failed to see Ren’s confusion, he certainly did look confused didn’t he? As if he never held an object that had nothing to do with blood, death and duty.

“Just something fun, probably way over your age range though haha.” Answered Masaaki sheepishly as he took the book back, tucked it under his armpit. “I have to leave now as my sister will wonder where I am. It was good to meet you and good luck.” And with that, the boy disappeared into the trees.
