Miyako

Miyako

D-rank
It had been a while since her last visit to the Tower of Heaven, to the specific floor that held an enormous library open to all citizens of Kumogakure. After the one mission she had received as a genin, which brought her for the first time to the Kumogakure Library, Miyako had found herself visiting on occasion even without the goal of completing an assigned mission. Fondness had developed for the antique shelves, lined with books on all subjects, many of which contained undated, yellowed pages, somewhat still in one piece through the miracles spun through the owner's skilled fingers. The owner was a lovely middle-aged woman who Miyako felt an overwhelming affection for, a gentle lady of a small stature who cared for others as much as she cared for her beloved books. Miyako had initially arrived for her mission with guarded wariness, the idea of being assigned to such a trivial task fuelling her fear that she wasn't useful enough to be given anything of higher significance. But that same day, she came out of the mission feeling refreshed and at peace, the relaxing schedule consisting only of light cleaning in the library and taking time off to have tea and converse with the friendly owner, who seems to always know how to keep the conversation going without touching on subjects that would put the kunoichi in an uncomfortable situation. It was nice, being encouraged to talk without actually feeling pressured to. The moment a question was asked that took her longer than several seconds to respond to, the subject would have changed, never once allowing the conversation to awkwardly remain on an unwanted topic.

Needless to say, she was thrilled with the idea of being able to visit again, gaining credits for a mission as well. Her visits to the library had grown less frequent as time passed, her promotion to chuunin allowing her to qualify for more missions and keeping her busier than she had ever been before. Instead of being disappointed at being handed a simple D rank mission, she had accepted it without hesitation, setting off immediately towards the Tower of Heaven, where she knew Aoi would be waiting with her characteristic smile, even without knowing who was to come. There was something about the older lady's motherly disposition that brought out a warm fuzzy feeling, as cheesy as that sounded. Right then, how should she go about greeting her? Sorry for not coming here more often? I'm here to complete my mission? No … the latter sounded too formal, too distant, as though she was here for the sole purpose of achieving mission completion. The pondering continued as Miyako made her way up the long winding stairs, never once missing a step as she continued forward, the distance not at all fazing her. If a flight of stairs - albeit a very long flight of stairs - managed to wear out her stamina after all the physical training her body received, that would be quite the joke. It was ridiculous how far up the library was, especially considering that Aoi's age was beginning to show, and that the point of this mission was to aid the woman in cleaning the library because she herself was incapable of doing so anymore. To think that Aoi would have to make this journey up to the library every day was astonishing.

Okay, so I'll greet her politely, apologize for not visiting for so long, and if she asks, I'll tell her I'm here for a mission. With her final rehearsed lines ready in her mind, she stopped at the entrance to the library, opening the door quietly … only to be greeted by a rather alarming screech of fear. Eyes widening ever so slightly, her passive electrical current perception suddenly picked up the signal that someone was barrelling towards her right, and in response, Miyako whipped around, just in time to catch a familiar figure in her arms. Thankfully, Aoi was light, not enough to bowl over the equally light Miyako. "Aoi-san? What's the matter? Is something happening?" She asked urgently in a stream of questions, eyes scanning the area for a threat. Whatever it was, it had to be serious enough to make the usually calm old lady so riled up. Panicked eyes look up at her as recognition dawned, and Aoi visibly relaxed, moving to stand on her own. "Miyako-chan, is that you? I … was just -" She cut herself off with another shriek as her gaze wandered, arm moving to point at one of the various reading desks at the side of the room. Blue-gray eyes followed the direction of the finger, zooming in on a tiny black shape resting in perfect calmness at the corner of the table.

"A … spider? Aoi-san, is that the problem?" A trembling nod gave her the response she needed. Lightly touching the older woman's shoulder once in reassurance, Miyako reached for the katana that she had forgotten to leave at home that day, unsheathing it silently and placing the tip at the opposite end of the table, slowly sliding it towards the spider. To her relief, it didn't budge. Miyako herself hated spiders as well, but it was clear that between the two of them, she would have to be the one to deal with this. The blade eventually reached the approximate location of the spider, the unsharpened side nudging at the spider's leg. A couple more nudges later, it moved onto the tip of the blade, clearly irritated with the idea of having to move. It likely had been spending the past little while running away from - or was it chasing? - Aoi and Miyako was sure that even spiders had their limits. Carefully lifting the blade off the table, Miyako scanned the area, unsure of what to do with the spider. Killing it with her blade had seemed unnecessary, but setting it down somewhere wasn't an option either. Even if treading up the stairs wasn't that big of a deal, it was too much work to walk all the way back down to let the spider free. Throw it out the window? … Something about that seemed cruel, especially since she had opted not to kill it in the first place.

"Um … Aoi-san? Do you have something I can put the spider in for now?" Wordlessly, the older woman went and retrieved a small bag, setting it down on the table and backing away, watching as Miyako slipped the spider into the bag and lightly twisted the top to ensure that the eight-legged creature wouldn't be able to escape, but still have enough air to breathe. "I'll bring it down later, I'm here to help with the clean up." She was met with the woman's usual smile, a friendly sight indeed. And so the two set off on the usual schedule, Miyako helping to clean even the unused corners of the library while Aoi bustled around keeping her company and preparing tea. Eventually, the day was over and Aoi insisted that her helper return home, handing her a handful of ryo and thanking her repeatedly for aiding her in taking care of her ultimate fear - spiders.
