Masanori picked Genbu up, squeezing him tightly before slipping him into his chest. The turtle flailed inside Masanori with glee, pleased to be home at last. Thankfully for the pair, they weren't prohibited from being together. That no pets rule was a real pain in the ass. It was nowhere near as nice as the new one. No elemental Jutsu. Sure, it hit Masanori hard, he couldn't use any of his water techniques, but it did give him a lot less things to worry about. He didn't have to be paranoid about lightning, or, god forbid, fire. The sun had already begun to set, and while it had dropped below the boundary of the arena, thus removing any potential to be used as a blinding aid, there was still enough residual light to see with.

The arena they had been given was... unusual to say the least. It had two distinct environments; a lush green field with a waterfall and a barren wasteland. They were separated by a trench of some sort. Since Masanori's opponent had yet to grace him with his presence, he approached the edge, and peered in to see it was a bed of spikes. Clearly, if anyone fell in they were screwed. Backing away from the edge, Masanori approached the water. He, like any reasonable water ninja, had chosen the one with the pool. Sure, he couldn't use the water, but he felt at home by it, and soon he found himself sitting on the edge of the pool, Killing edge already drawn and laid across his knees, the hand on his right side, ready to be grabbed at a moment's notice. "I can't use my water techniques, nor can I use hydrification. There's no need for you to keep me hydrated, little buddy." Masanori felt Genbu flail inside himself, kicking at the walls of his body. He always did that when he was annoyed. Here he was, and he couldn't even help. Well, that wasn't entirely true, he could use his harden shell technique, act as some weird living shield, but beyond that... It was a shame. Still, morale support was better than no support. He had no idea if his enemy was a swordsman, or if he used genjutsu, or somtehing else that didn't use elements, but it wasn't that common. Most modern shinobi were all about the elements, and that gave warriors like Masanori, who fought using Katana and armour, a distinct advantage. He even had a few dirty tricks lined up, like always. He had a metsubishi stashed in his already clenched left fist, locked between the muscle of his thumb and his palm.

Glancing up, Masanori saw his opponent on the rocky expanse across the valley. Just like last time, they had ensured the Shinobi entered from opposite points. This... would be interesting.

Ichirou stepped into the Grand Colosseum.  He had barely beaten Mihou in his last match, already showing that he needed to work harder and train more.  Walking through a long hallway that bent around to his side of the arena.  Thinking back to the barren and cavernous arena he had been forced into last time, Ichirou was hoping for something a bit happier and filled with plant life.  Stopping at the door to the arena, the Examiner listed the rules for this match.  There would be no elemental jutsu of any kind allowed in the match this time.  The examiners and the Five Kages wanted to see how well the Genin could fight when put against each others’ abilities of brains and brawn.

Ichirou nodded, understanding and agreeing to abide by the rules set out for the match.  The doors swung open wide to a barren land.  With a disappointed sigh, Ichirou took his first steps on the dry land.  He viewed his new landscape, noting its many jagged rocks with a scattered few trees that looked like they had died long ago.  As he made his way nearer to the center, he saw his opponent, Aisu Masanori, standing on the other side of a wide ravine.  Ichirou stopped a meter short of the ravine, glancing at it for a bit.  From his angle, he could see it was rather dark inside it, meaning it went down for quite a ways.  Definitely did not give him any good feelings about going down there.  He would most likely want to avoid it, as nothing about its appearances told him it was safe.

Ichirou got in a ready stance, drawing out his katana.  Looking at the blade, he remembered the day he had received it from his foster father.  It wasn’t as sharp as it had once been, but Ichirou counted on it to protect him this match just like it did several times so many years ago.  Locking his eyes onto his opponent, Ichirou waited for the match to begin.  His opponent was by the edge of the pool.  Masanori’s side seemed to be the complete opposite of Ichirou’s.  It had dark green grass that was well watered by a fairly large pool of water that was fueled by a waterfall at the edge of the arena.  At least the arena wasn’t completely dead.  Still, there was the ravine to keep in mind.

“Begin!” shouted the Examiner from above and the match began.

"BEGIN!" Masanori stood up slowly, removing Killing Edge from his knees and grasping it in his right hand as he did so. He walked forward slowly, until he stood but 10 metres away from the edge of the ravine. He kept his left hand open as to remove any suspicion of the Metsubishi he had concealed. A brief turn in magic during his youth had taught Masanori the basics of Slight of hand, and as such he was completely comfortable holding the sphere with the muscles of his hand while keeping it appearing relaxed and empty. Still, he made sure to not reveal the deception by keeping the back of the hand aimed towards his mark. "I'm afraid I can't promise I won't hurt you." Masanori spoke with a dry tone, his eyes locked onto his opponent's sword as he spoke. Raising his left hand, but being sure to not reveal the Metsubishi, Masanori pulled a Senbon out of the front of his Do chestplate and hooked it between his teeth, where he held it like a toothpick.

Masanori flicked his jaw up, expelling a burst of air from his lungs as he spat the Senbon towards his opponent's face. He waited until the enemy made any form of reaction towards it before flicking his left wrist forwards, firing the concealed Metsubishi towards his enemy. As he did this, Masanori ran forward rapidly, his left hand sliding under his Haidate to pull out a smoke grenade. He pulled the pin as soon as he withdrew it, and kept it in his hand as he leapt over the ravine. If his enemy did not move out of the way, Masanori would swing down hard with his right hand, dragging Killing Edge down for a vertical attack with the added force his body weight placed behind it, his left forearm covering his unarmoured face as he did so. If his enemy did move out of the way, however, Masanori would drop the smoke grenade at his feet and withdraw a Windmill Shuriken from his back and begin spinning it around in his left hand, waiting for a clear sight of his enemy before throwing it towards him. As soon as he threw the shuriken, he would immediately sprint behind it, drawing his Tanto into his left hand. If the enemy dodged the shuriken, he would spin to his right once, dragging the Katana and Tanto in a horizontal pattern, with the katana above the Tanto aimed at the target's throat, while the Tanto aimed for his abdomen. If the enemy blocked the shuriken with his blade, Masanori would abuse the disruption in his enemy's guard dealt by the powerful weapon to jump into the air, spinning over himself once in a ball before bringing both blades down in a vertical swinging strike, the katana in his right hand aimed for his enemy's left shoulder, while the tanto aimed for his right.

Masanori's opponent blocked the senbon with the flat of his blade, and rolled backwards to avoid the Metsubishi. This allowed Maranori to land on the other side of the ravine cleanly, dropping the smoke grenade at his feet as he did so before withdrawing the Windmill Shuriken from his back under cover of smoke. He tossed the Shuriken with force from his smoke veil before sprinting after it himself. The grinding shriek of steel on steel roared through the arena as Masanori's enemy blocked the shuriken with his sword. Masanori took this opportunity to leap into the air, rolling forwards before swinging both his blades down with force, his right katana aimed for his enemy's left shoulder while his Tanto aimed for his right. Masanori's enemy raised his blade vertically to try and block the onslaught, placing his left hand on the back of the blade to try and brace it against the force. The momentum and the weight behind Masanori's swing was far superior, however, and both blades dug into his opponent's shoulders, roughly two inches on either side. The weight behind it caused Masanori's enemy to drop to his knees, and Masanori finished the attack by sinking both feet into his enemy's abdomen, sending him flying backwards while Masanori himself landed roughly on his back.

The referee grabbed Ichirou by the shirt collar, stopping him from falling into the Ravine as he did so. "Well... that didn't take long. Aisu, Masanori wins!" Masanori dragged himself to his feet, taking a moment to wipe the edges of his blades off on his pants before re-sheathing them. "Those cuts should clean up nicely. If I may offer some advice; an airborne enemy are able to put their entire body weight behind a swing, there was no way you were going to block that attack properly without being far stronger than I am."

With the start of the match, his opponent sprang into action. Taking a senbon to his lips before spitting it at Ichirou. The senbon was slow and easily dodged by Ichirou, only having to pivot on his right foot to let it fly harmlessly by him. Meanwhile, Ichirou kept his eyes on Masanori who began to run, flinging something from his left hand. He caught sight of the little flying ball and hopped backwards (ooc: since he is sideways from dodging the senbon he is hopping parallel to the ravine) just one foot out of its flight path. Seeing Masanori was about to leap across the ravine, Ichirou ran and jumped diagonally across the ravine as soon as Masanori landed, spinning in the air to keep his eyes on his opponent. Upon Masanori landing a smoke bomb was set off that hid him from Ichirou's view. A windmill shuriken blew out of the fading smoke. Reacting to it, Ichirou knocked the windmill away, though the power from it unsettled him in the air, causing him to fall short of crossing the ravine. Landing on the side of the ravine's wall on the lush side. Ichirou had barely steadied himself when Masanori appeared before him, spinning with a katana and tanto. Both were slashing from the right, which resulted in a simple block with his katana. The force however combined with Ichirou just steadying himself nearly ended up with the backside of his own blade running into his face. Reacting in the only counter he could manage, Ichirou shoved his right knee at Masanori's crotch while holding the block.

This guy had a lot of tricks up his sleeve, just like Mihou. From being up close and personal, Ichirou could see Masanori fully clad in armor, as well as being armed with two swords. This match was not looking at all for Ichirou. He needed to think of a counter attack quick. This opponent didn't seem like the type to let the tables be turned so easily. Formulating any and all possible plans, Ichirou smiled through gritted teeth at Masanori. This fight would indeed test his abilities as a shinobi.
