With the setting sun draining away into the horizon, the last trickles of orange light weren't much longer for this world. Across the city, tall lanterns ignited one by one, doors closed and the frigid night-time cold crept over the streets. Kirei shivered as he walked, mentally cursing the useless, blithering chill. Even with his coat on, the Fire Shinobi already couldn't wait to get back to somewhere warm. All around, local businesses long closed up for the night, the rhythmic thrumming of bar songs and all night karaoke from an underground establishment 'The Alley Cat' was the only thing the boy saw as he rounded the street corner. It had gone dark so fast; when he and Yūji had wandered into a cafe for a post-dinner snack, it had been light out, and by the time they emerged the streets were empty save for shadows.

Whatever was coming from that bar as Kirei passed down the street sounded like a cat that much was sure. To a foreigner, the streets of the Mist Village looked utterly identical. Trying to stick to the broad central roads was helping a little, but without any point of reference, he was really only justifying his quest to become more lost. To the boy's side, the weary Yūji trotted along on all fours not nearly as perturbed by the cold as his human companion. The Hound found himself trying to track the streets by Kirei's scent, looking for places they'd been earlier in the day to guide them somewhere familiar. Unfortunately, the strong smell of fresh seafoam was a distraction for Yūji's senses to which he was still becoming accustomed. While the dog focused on his task, he heard Kirei muttering something about all-night bookstores. Fed up with the boy's nonsense after they'd wandered well into the waning dusk, Yūji let out a low growl to grab the boy's attention.

"We're lost, Kirei." he barked angrily "Let's find a phone and call the academy, they'll send an instructor to meet us."

"No c'mon, we can find our way back!"

"Absolutely not."

"It's near the center of town, right? Where is the administration building supposed to be, anyway?"

"You've been playing hooky since we got here, enough is enough."

"I bet if we got on the roof-tops we'd be able to just make a straight line into the city; I bet it'll be obvious which building is which."

"Stop ignoring me, Kirei."

"Okay, let's go!"

With a playful smirk, Kirei would be off in a run and leap towards an awning overhanging the street, gripping tightly and pulling himself up onto it before jumping again into the commercial rooftop. Rolling his eyes, Yūji would give chase, nimble canine frame easily able to scale the building and keep pace with his charge. If it hadn't been for Kirei's size, running across the rooftops with his black dog might have gotten him killed. His combination of Leaf Ninja colors and slight frame made him instantly recognizable as a visiting Genin.

Kirigakure did look beautiful at night, Kirei admitted. In spite of the cold causing him to exhale thick fog with every hurried breath, the city itself still had a mystery for Kirei that Konoha no longer possessed. With his arm strung taut on a third story roof, the Uchiha pulled hard and dragged his body onto the higher vantage point to look for some way home. His initial assumption that notable buildings would be easy to spot might have been the case for a local, but the tall buildings all looked the same to Kirei. In fact, getting the high ground had produced the opposite of his intended effect in that he was now completely turned around, and to make matters worse, it was even darker than before. He stifled a sigh, not yet content to admit defeat to his furry companion, and instead pretended to look around for several seconds longer before picking a direction at random.

Bouncing from foothold to foothold during his descent, Kirei kept the facade of determination strong, adamantly pretending he knew precisely where to go. When the duo finally dropped down again onto a wide road lined with tall buildings, Kirei grinned confidently towards his dog and set off towards the sound of distant inhabitance. Of course, Yūji's sense of hearing far eclipsed the boy's own, in fact, he had heard where they were approaching long before the familiar sound reached Kirei's ears. As he came around the bend, Kirei would be assaulted by the start of a new verse of all-night karaoke. His eyes trailed up the street sign, a tail ('no!'), paws ('please, no!'), and smiling cat's face.

"God damnit, Yūji, I think we're lost." Defeated, the boy would sit on his knees and put his hand on top of the dog's brow.

"You're an idiot, Kirei."

Chigetsu Hōzuki

Chigetsu Hōzuki

Dead
The dim burning lanterns that dotted the Mist Village's inner city provided a comfortable ambiance as the vestiges of the setting sun collapsed below the horizon. Their purpose was nearly redundant on most nights. Illumination beaming down from the moon was typically enough to keep the village perfectly navigable after the sunset, even with the all-encompassing blanket of fog that gave the village its name. Nights where the moon withdrew into shyness and disappeared from the night, such as tonight, gave much more importance and relevance to the electric lighting that flooded the city. The soft glow of these artificial lights bathed lower streets in their glow, amplified by the flashing neon that sprung up as darkness came. As would be expected with a city of Its size, The Mist Village remained open and vibrant even after the sun set. The tumultuous churning of the ocean did not stop and quiet itself as the sun came to rest, and that same unrelenting drive existed within many throughout the Land of Water.

That same unrest existed in Chigetsu. Even as his usual self-imposed bedtime would pass he would find himself wandering the streets of the city. There was no direct purpose in his evening stroll. He had no task at hand or chore to be completed. The Hozuki boy simply allowed the breathing breeze of salty sea air blow him around in the night. His lack of purpose was much clearer from his attire, equipped with a matching set of thick flannel so casual and comfortable that their purpose as pajamas were near immediately obvious. Only a thin pair socks, which were quickly becoming soaked, separated his feet from the ground. To an observer it would nearly seem as if the male was sleep-walking, if not for the kunai hastily shoved into the waistband of his pants and the haggard glare he was carrying.

It seemed that the ocean breeze had decided on Chigetsu's destination. That being a vending machine. Perhaps there might have been a bit of Chigetsu's own influence on the decision as well. The presence of a few ryo bills being pulled out from the flannel top's inner pocket seemed to confirm that. The produced cash would be quickly stuffed into the vending machine, which luckily would accept it all on the first attempt as if by some miracle. A flash of LED signified that the machine had acknowledged his payment. Chigetsu would stare into the backlit interior blankly. His exhausted eyes had trouble making out the finer details of what was within.

"A midnight snack again, Chigetsu?" The kunai currently bulging out from his waistband piped up. Its voice whispered delicately into the ears of the child. It was near silent and ethereal but still maintained the sternness that Chigetsu had come to expect from it.

A light grumbling would be his first response, coming out of instinct. The nagging voice of his kunai was something he typically paid a bit more attention to, but his current exhaustion made him much more uncooperative than normal. It would be a few moments of collecting his thoughts before he could respond properly. ". . . Just want something to eat."

"I told you that your sugar habit needs to be kicked, haven't I?" Chigestsu would sneer in response to the continued badgering from his weapon. In the plexiglass surface of the vending machine he could see the fainted reflection of his own face. His eyes would follow the way his face stretched as his lips formed a frown.

"I haven't even bought anything yet." Very quickly he found his exhaustion melting away and being replaced with irritation. Scanning down again across what was available to him from the vending machine he now saw that indeed a good deal of it likely contained some sort of sugar.

"There are plenty of other places you could be eating at that would serve much healthier options." As his kunai spoke Chigetsu would be punching in a series of digits into the vending machine's keypad. A slight rumbling and mechanic whirl would erupt from the machine, gently shaking it as it dropped the selected carton of orange juice into its bottom slot. It would quickly be retrieved by Chigetsu. His exceptionally loud kunai would be pulled from his waistband and used to slash open a hole in the top. The carton would be tilted up immediately after, the created slit in the cardboard pressed tight to the boy's lips.

Down from the heavens man and beast would simultaneously crash down. Their downwards descent would destroy the peaceful silence that had previously coated the streets, ripping it to shreds with their touch down onto the wide road. Their landing was not too far off from the juice-drinking Hozuki, perhaps five meters up the road. Chigetsu's exhaustion and internal conversation with his kunai distracted him from their earlier footsteps during the descent, which had he been more alert he probably would have heard. Their drop was sudden and unanticipated from his perspective though, and as the carton of juice was being tilted up a thousand bells of alarm would ring inside his head. His throat would seize up around the juice he had drinking and immediately he would begin to choke, both the kunai and carton of juice slipping from his hands in the moment of shock. Chigetsu would fall with them after a moment. Orange juice would be leaking from his mouth and nose, a portion of his face having taken on the color as it dripped down his chin from the surprise. The sliced open carton would leak freely onto the street after it hit the ground, creating a small puddle which soaked into the boy's pajamas as he struggled to breathe.

With his lungs still seizing in pain Chigetsu would snatch up the kunai, now partially wet with juice as well, and point it blindly in the direction that the two had run off in. With what air he could manage, Chigetsu would scream after them.

"H...Hey!"

Having been so focused on the descent, Kirei had utterly neglected to check whether anyone was anywhere nearby. Amongst the thrill of leaping from rooftop to rooftop in an unknown land, Kirei became far too focused on finding the next landing than deciding who he might scare shitless by jumping around in the dark with his dog. With the night time gloom and heavy fog; Kirei hadn't considered in the slightest that he could easily be mistaken for a homeless cannibal stalker. In the moments following his landing, he still wouldn't be afforded the time to process that possibility as the disappointment of not only ending up exactly where he'd started but also the shame of losing to Yūji were the only things on his mind.

"You're an idiot, Kirei."

The boy reached out his arm for the dog, wrapping the left around his companion while tussling at Yūji's fur. At the heart of it, Kirei felt like a tremendous moron leading them around in circles for absolutely nothing. Yūji didn't even want to be here babysitting, and the boy had nothing but good to say about the grumpy hound. Since they'd got here, the pair had yet even to see where they would spend the next year living; Kirei had run right off to the marketplace, dragging Yūji along with him and now getting them both lost. With his pride sufficiently wounded, Kirei was ready to admit they should ask for guidance.

"I know, I'm just-"

"H...Hey!"

Kirei jumped out of his skin. He hadn't so much as noticed anybody else nearby, and the sudden, shrill cry interrupted the stillness so abruptly that the boy's arms shot straight up. Kirei flailed briefly, letting go of Yūji and falling backward onto the frigid masonry. With the cold stone beneath his palms, Kirei would scuttle away from the source of the noise as quickly as possible while pulling his head and shoulders up to gaze upon the face of the real homeless cannibal stalker of Kirigakure. In the grim fog, Kirei gazed upon the face of death: a grotesque silhouette collapsed into a contorted heap, spluttering, gargling and howling at the sky.

In an instant, Kirei's life flashed before his eyes. It didn't have to end this way: alone in the fog, eaten alive in the Mist Village by this wretched creature. While letting out its hellish roar, the unknown beast leveled a sharp blade towards the Uchiha and Kirei's eyes adjusted through the fog and shock. Strewn across the floor was a horrific assailant dripping head to toe with...orange juice? Clad in a fiendish ensemble of...pajamas?!

"W-what's going on here?!" Kirei stammered, hands fumbling at his waist for the pouch of ninja tools but instead finding himself at odds with the damn zipper "Is this some kind of joke?"

Having found the will to stand, the boy hopped to his feet and peered at the boy a few meters down the road. Yūji, the guard dog, would let out a half-hearted growl and then wander over to the dripping Hozuki, lapping at the juice forming in a puddle on the ground remaining docile however the boy reacted to his presence. Kirei, meanwhile, would steady himself, catching his breath and calming himself down while marking the other ninja as someone who didn't appear much older than he was. Relieved to see what he assumed was a local, Kirei shot a toothy grin in the boy's direction and laughed a little.

"Thank god! I thought you were a cannibal stalker for a second there, man!" The Uchiha would offer his hand, either to shake or to help the boy up depending on whether he'd stood by now "I'm Kirei! I'm an exchange student from the Leaf."

With a good enough introduction offered, the blonde would turn and examine the street again then sigh loudly. Kirei had resolved to let Yūji make the calls from now on but just couldn't pass up the opportunity to socialize with more Kirigakure Shinobi. Sensing himself relinquishing control again, the black hound would carry on to itself as Kirei continued to talk.

"I'm trying to find my way to the administration building. You look like you're from around here you wanna show me the way to go? Everything still seems the same to me it's got me all turned around, yanno? What are you doing out here, anyway?" Kirei would leave enough time to reply to his questions in between each one as not to be entirely bombarding the stranger. He would pause for a bit longer after the last question and then raise an eyebrow at the other ninja;

"Hey, uhhhhhh...did you know you're all sticky, dude?"

Kirei hoped the Mist Ninja would offer to show him at least some of the way or assist with directions and if he did, then the Uchiha would happily follow his lead throughout the alien city. With a twinge of homesickness, Kirei was feeling nostalgic for the familiar alleys and suburbs of Konoha, and the friends he'd left behind.

Chigetsu Hōzuki

Chigetsu Hōzuki

Dead
The shrill shrieking of a scream came back to Chigetsu as a response. He would flinch from it, shifting backwards into his little puddle of shame. It took a moment for the Hōzuki to recognize it as his own voice echoing back in the silence of the night. Perhaps if he were a bit more aware of the situation he was in the sense of intense shame would have made Chigetsu flee from the scene, not wanting to be seen in such a vulnerable and embarrassing state. However, the boy's mind was still nearly half asleep. The shock of the moment had not yet jumpstarted his mind, and so he wasn't completely able to fully process what was going on.

Streams of orange and yellow trailed down Chigetsu's face and chin, dripping down his neck. Deep and heavy breaths were taken, his inhales and exhales marked with a slight wheeze. Accidentally inhaling orange juice was extremely painful. It had a way of not only causing pain from choking on it, but also burning the sensitive interior of your throat and nose with how acidic it was. The majority of the juice had been expelled from him with the initial violent sputtering, but a portion of it remained inside his throat and sinuses. It stung, but at the very least it distracted him from how incredibly uncomfortable he was now soaking in the puddle of juice.

Vague sounds echoed out from the distance.  Chigetsu's awareness had taken a sharp dive into the pavement after it's small spike, and so the words of the boy down the street initially did not reach him. It was the slight disturbance in the puddle he had been laying in that shook him from his panic-induced state of confusion. The closeness movement shook him, and for a moment he would flail the sharp point of his kunai out in whatever direction he was holding it.

After a few moments of flailing his arm into the empty air, Chigetsu would regain enough mental clarity to realize the source of this movement was the dog beside him. Somehow it had gone completely unnoticed as it approached him. Truly it must have been a master of stealth. That or Chigetsu had hit his head when he fell. The held weapon would be lowered slowly as his panic melted away.

"Thank god! I thought you were a cannibal stalker for a second there, man!" The male who had suddenly spoken seemed to be lowering his hand down to Chigetsu, offering assistance to stand. Chigetsu, in his moment of supreme clarity, had only just noticed this guy as he started talking. "I'm Kirei! I'm an exchange student from the Leaf." As mighty as his anxiety about meeting new people usually was, Chigetsu was in no position to refuse assistance in his current state. Letting the kunai drop to the ground with a clang, Chigetsu would reach out to attempt to take the hand that was offered to him.

He missed. Rather than taking the assistance that Kirei offered down to him Chigetsu would instead grope blindly into the open air before losing his balance and slipping down from his position to fall face first again into the pavement. A wet splatting sound would come from the impact.

The Hōzuki's body would jiggle slightly before collapsing into a puddle of water, the impact from the pavement causing his body to reactively liquify. The puddle of orange juice grew in size as the liquid from Chigetsu's body was added to it. The entirety of the puddle would then rise up, shifting and squirming and squelching as it rose up against gravity. It would shift until it transformed into the shape of a standing male, Chigetsu on his feet again. The sticky moisture that had been soaking through his pajamas after the fall had disappeared entirely, along with the wetness in his socks. Now a bit more awake after that temporary hydrification, Chigetsu would reach out to take Kirei's hand in a light shake.

Chigetsu didn't seem to notice that his skin was now a light orange, the color of the juice that he had been laying it. The puddle that had been on the ground must have absorbed into his skin somehow as he liquified. A strange sticky texture coated his hand as he shook with the other boy's, leaving a bit of orange residue on Kirei's palm afterward.

"I'm trying to find my way to the administration building. You look like you're from around here you wanna show me the way to go? Everything still seems the same to me it's got me all turned around, yanno? What are you doing out here, anyway?" There would be a slight uncomfortable pause between Kirei's questioning and Chigetsu's responses, the white-haired boy taking his time to respond.

"Hey, uhhhhhh...did you know you're all sticky, dude?" Chigetsu would ignore this question.

"The Administration building...? It's..." Realizing that his precious kunai was still lying on the pavement Chigetsu would pause. Slowly he would kneel down, scooping it from where he had dropped it. "Right in the center of the city. It's the one of the biggest buildings in Kirigakure. It's hard to miss." As he rose up again Chigetsu would point with the tip of his kunai off in the distance. There would be nothing visible but fog and darkness in the direction he pointed.

"And... Uh, I was getting some juice." The sliced open carton would still be laying on the ground not too far away. The connection between his orange juice and Kirei suddenly began to become apparent in his mind. Chigetsu's eyes would narrow slightly now as he looked over at the Leaf Ninja. "Were you the one who made me spill my juice? That was an entire carton!" Rather than pointing the kunai over towards where he thought the administration building was it would instead be pointed dangerously in the direction of Kirei's stomach. "Do you know how expensive that stuff is? Oranges don't even grow in the Land of Water, it all has to be imported!"

Two for two. In spite of their hard-assed reputation, the Kiri Shinobi that Kirei met so far had seemed friendly enough. The Uchiha extended his hand in an effort to help the boy up, but it wasn't meant to be. Fumbling at the two-yard line, the pair barely grazed fingertips, becoming as the Creation of Adam for a moment before Chigetsu's momentous fall back down. His landing would startle the Yūji, who was still happily drinking the discarded orange juice, causing him to whip around and hop backward, away from the puddle. In a second of poignant tranquility, the ripples of orange juice across the pavement rang out in the silence.

No sooner had the moment passed, and Kirei's fallen companion would quiver before melting away in an instant. Again, Kirei was shocked at the sight in front of him as he watched the Hozuki drip layer by layer into the swirling mass of orange and gray. Stumbling, the Uchiha would shuffle his feet towards his faithful hound. As his ankle came down for the second step, the handle of the discarded kunai would find itself lodged beneath the Uchiha's foot and rolling forward, causing Kirei to tumble down beside Yūji with another boyish yelp. When his eyes opened on the ground, the mysterious sticky boy had vanished entirely. Kirei rubbed his hand and backside to sooth them from the fall, but his mind quickly refocused to find the stranger.

After a second, Kirei turned toward Yūji, eyes wide.

"Y-Yūj...d-did you see that?" Kirei whispered hurriedly "What if he was a...a...g-g-g-ghost kid?!"

"It's a jutsu, Kirei," Yūji said soberly, rolling his eyes.

As the dog spoke, Kirei's head calmed down a little, and in sequence, the water in front of the two would heave and then begin to coalesce into a churning pillar rising from the earth. Pulled taut by some invisible puppet-master, the water climbed heavenward before reaching its apex and then solidifying into the shape of the Hozuki, who would see Kirei grinning at him happily when he emerged. Curiously, the fruity extract plastering the ground from Chigetsu's fall conjoined with the boy's reformation, fading to a hilarious orange hue in his skin. Kirei stood to meet the stranger face to face, though the Uchiha was a few inches shorter, and gripped the outstretched hand in kind, shaking firmly. At the time Kirei retracted his hand he would immediately feel the sticky residue, a thin film of orange syrup clung to his palm and fingers, thin strands connecting the two boys' palms for several inches before snapping. Noticing the viscous substance but not wanting to draw attention to the apparent weirdness going on, or make the Hozuki feel any more awkward than he might already, Kirei said nothing. Instead, the Uchiha would produce a small handkerchief and wipe his hand clean before holding the sodden rag in his hand awkwardly.

"Uh, thanks," He replied as the stranger thrust the pointed end of his kunai into the darkened fog, "Must have been the fog."

In a moment of divine realization, the other boy's eyes would change, stance shifting as he replied to more of Kirei's statement. It seemed as if Kirei's neglectful romp around the Mist Village was the first pratfall to set off this unfortunate comedy of errors, and the Hozuki was suddenly unamused. Seemingly upset with the loss of his carton, the stranger whipped the kunai around in the dark, pointing it directly toward Kirei's gut. Reactively, the Uchiha would hop away a step or two to avoid potential evisceration and smile nervously.

"H-hey man uhh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ruin your juice," Kirei held his arms out, palms facing the Hozuki, causing him to drop the handkerchief entirely, while his feet shuffled backward at a slow, subtle pace "How about if you, uhhh, meet me here tomorrow? At noon? I'll pay you back!"

Continuing to backpedal, Kirei would enter the outer limits of vision through the fog, becoming slightly blurry through the white mist shaking his palms back and forth like a nervous broadway star.

"I'll bring you oranges!"

A silhouette with nervous laughter and jazz hands.

"More oranges than you can count!"

A blurry shadow, fading away into the fog.

"We'll have a whole orange eating day!"

A disembodied voice.

"I promise!"

Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap. A fading yell through the fog and the rapid pitter-patter of retreating footsteps would vanish into the thick blanket of whiteness. Kirei would leave Chigetsu standing alone there with only his echo, and the promise of oranges to come. The Mist Ninja had no way of knowing, of course, but the Uchiha intended to keep his promise: a Leaf Ninja always does. Now with a vague direction to head (assuming the Hozuki had been right initially), Kirei would take to the rooftops again and start a new navigation effort toward the Administration building.

Exit.

Chigetsu Hōzuki

Chigetsu Hōzuki

Dead
It occurred to Chigetsu that he had never actually seen an orange. He had seen pictures of them. There had been a picture of a sliced in half orange on the carton of juice he had been drinking from earlier. Never had he actually seen a real life, in the flesh orange though. They were elusive creatures to track down in the Land of Water. The vast archipelago that comprised his homelands were near uniformly too cold and too rocky. The soil was too poor and the temperature consistently too low for any orchards. He had of course seen a good deal of the fruit that was imported during his visits to the marketplace, but even there he could not recall ever seeing an orange. The best he could ever find was processed and packaged juice that had likely been flash frozen before being transported across the sea.  The absence seemed strange to him now. There were such a variety of fruits imported from the Land of Fire that lined the markets. He had seen pomegranates, kiwis, figs, melon, and durian. All made for delicious juices that he had sampled at least once or twice, except the durian. Chigetsu stayed very far away from those.

The insanity of this strange foreigner, this 'Kirei' (if that even was his real name), promising him an entire day's worth of oranges had been enough to stun Chigetsu. His grip on the kunai relaxed just as he tried to process what an entire day of oranges would even be. It was something that was difficult to imagine. This person did seem like they were from the Land of Fire. Was it possible they were the traveling heir of some plantation? For some reason the metal handle of his knife was sticking in a strange fashion to his palm.  It would snap him out of his orange thoughts, staring down at his weird feeling kunai for a moment. The change in Chigetsu's eyes as he noticed his skin was a shade of bright orange was immediate, and immediately he would turn back up to point at the fleeing Leaf Ninja who was trying to make a swift escape. As Kirei's footsteps pattered off into the distance Chigetsu would growl. Half in horror at his own appearance, the Hozuki would scream after the other. "You did this to me!"

He made no attempt to follow the other, and his anger would quickly evaporate as soon as he took a few deep breaths. It was still much too late and Chigetsu was much too tired to be chasing after anybody. That small bout of talking and yelling was enough excitement to completely exhaust what little energy he had in the first place. In the end (it doesn't even matter), he was left with a sore body and a wasted carton of spilled orange juice. Even though he probably shouldn't cry over spilt juice, it was quite expensive and it wasn't exactly as if being a genin paid well. That wasn’t even taking into account whatever had ended up happening to his skin. Chigetsu was left thoroughly defeated by this interaction, shown to be inferior to Kirei even though Chigetsu had the home-field advantage. This could not stand.

Slowly Chigetsu would raise his hand up to his mouth, sticking out his tongue and giving his orange skin a testing lick. The taste of oranges was still there, but it was mixed a bit with the taste of Chigetsu's own sweat and the dirt from the ground. As he began to turn around to return to his apartment he would take another lick.
