Hanza

Hanza

Lightning Bluff:

Spending the last few weeks bound to the security of a hospital, never able to travel far, Hanza has only been able to enjoy the battle phase of these Chunin exams through the televised segments. He was rushed back into health by the staff at this hospital, and Hanza thanked them with intensity for that, but no sooner than he could walk out of those doors, he found himself trodding toward a large open basin filled with beautiful, yet intimidating spires that seemed to call down lightning at intervals of thirty seconds. The sky was consumed by dark clouds which seemed to feed the spires even more. As he approached from the northern entrance of the large basin, the crowd around him seemed to lose all composure. The announcer above made his words loud and clear as he threw out statistics and accomplishments of the young Kōri clansman.

Hanza was not prepared for who he would see approaching from the opposite direction. He would stare in despair, his eyes angled slightly toward the ground after he came full circle with his understanding. What a cruel fate this was. He approached the start marker on his end which when assumed as a position, brought the two combatants only fifteen meters away from one another. Lightning crashes all around as Hanza stood, his white hair gently fluttering against the somewhat angry gale from the storm far above. His fists remained clenched. He would wait until she arrived at her mark before looking up, directly into her blue eyes.

S...somehow I forgot to consider this outcome, Izumi Karisuma.” His eyes were coated with the small amount of liquid he could manage while knowing everyone around was looking at him. Don’t you hold back at all. You do your best and you beat me down on behalf of Sunagakure no Sato, do you understand me? Do not spare me a single injury. Do whatever you have to with no regret. I will see you in the aftermath.

After she had completely assumed her position and passed along any dialogue she had to make, the proctor of the exams would repeat the rules to them and perform his due diligence of a countdown.

3...2...1... BEGIN!

Hanza would grab his shirt and tear it from his body, infusing chakra into it for later usage. Discarding it, he would then without any telling body language release his five pockets of liquid nitrogen into the ground below, manipulating them via his will through the surface below. He would stagger four of them in a half circle formation in front of him while the fifth would zoom through the ground toward Izumi, a silent and undetectable agent of frost.

He would stand his ground at this point, fifteen meters away from his red haired opponent, anticipating what was to come, maintaining his nitrogen deposit beneath her feet as it had arrived there in only a second.

As Izumi marched into the arena she was squinting trying to make out the opponent she was to face. The boy looked familiar actually, and as she got closer the realization finally set in. It was a familiar face that she had grown attached to during these exams. It was Hanza Kouri, the boy who sacrificed himself to allow Izumi to complete the third trial of the exams. It was thanks to him that she was even in the tournament. Izumi had waited until the tournament to go all out with her techniques, showing everything she had against fellow refugee, Kisei Ushinatta. Izumi hadn’t quite come to terms with the fact that it seemed she had discovered a different side of her own self; a harsher side, perhaps even so far as truly cruel. Had the proctors not intervened Izumi would have killed the boy, and Izumi was doing so with a smile. Izumi was shocked that she was capable of such violence, the sight of the boys burning body falling off the bridge had filled her with satisfaction and she wasn’t quite sure why.  Would she be able to set her feelings aside yet again in this battle with Hanza? She feared that if she was able to crush him so easily and willingly as she had done to Kisei would mean she was truly different than the young woman who had lived in the Sand Village. Izumi’s dress was the same as her previous trial, tight fitting and battle ready. Today Izumi wore two headbands, the kirigakure one she was provided for the exams on her right and the precious sigil of her home on her left.

S...somehow I forgot to consider this outcome, Izumi Karisuma.” Hanza too looked truly sad, he didn’t look like he wanted to fight her. The young boy knew more about her than most, and too her displeasure this opponent also brought up her ruined home, “ Don’t you hold back at all. You do your best and you beat me down on behalf of Sunagakure no Sato, do you understand me? Do not spare me a single injury. Do whatever you have to with no regret. I will see you in the aftermath.” Hanza wanted her to give it her all but Izumi wasn’t quite sure if she was ready to do that to one she could honestly call friend. However, to ignore his request would be a true dishonor to both herself and her home. Izumi was holding back tears during her reply so she kept it simple, “I wish it hadn’t come to this Hanza, let’s hope what your mother said wasn’t right.” Izumi would quickly turn away and walk to her mark on the battlefield ready to start. The proctor would signal the beginning of the battle and Hanza would remove his shirt. No doubt using the same trick Izumi had in her first fight. Izumi would also remove her shirt, being joined by three copies of her now shirtless self Izumi would touch the clone closest to her putting a bit of chakra into it. That first clone, would quickly jump backwards staying out of the way. A second clone would begin flanking Hanza with the real Izumi being sure for both of them to cross paths while they moved to confuse Hanza as to which was the real one, or so she hoped. The third clone stayed put and would make a Tiger sign and exhale, firing a fireball that was 5m in diameter at her opponent. The clone that cast the fireball would dissipate immediately into the fire from whence it was made. The fireball would reach Hanza in a matter of moments closing the fifteen meter gap in less than a second. Izumi wanted to gauge his reactions and find out how much of a threat the boy would end up being.

Izumi did not hesitate to strip her shirt off along with Hanza, tossing it aside in a similar manner which had it’s own effect altogether on the poor inexperienced young man. Suddenly face to face with a friend in the public eye, both shirtless. Hanza gained a slightly red tone as he hesitated just long enough for Izumi to bring forth clones and command them about in a way that he wouldn’t have reasonably been able to keep the nitrogen pocket beneath the real Izumi. One Izumi retreated to, whilst the rest engaged. Hanza knew his opponent was more physically able bodied than he, and so he endeavored to remain rooted in his position whilst they maneuvered. Two of the Izumis performed a flank maneuver. Hanza, controlling his nitrogen deposits all at once with ease due to his prowess with multitasking, opted to keep one pocket following each clone, and moved one beneath the location of the shirt while remaining vigilant of the two figures flanking him.

A red flag raised as one of the “clones” formed into a ball of blazing heat, moving so quickly toward the icy boy that without his proficiency in reactive abilities, he would have been ended right there. Expanding outward from his body, a transparent chakra bubble composed of Suiton would barely expand beyond his body before the fireball made impact. It was a call so close it made Hanza flinch intensely. Even he had not been sure he was safe in that instant. He gripped his weapons pouch and took out three of his Kirigakure senbon, launching two at the flanking Izumis (one each) and one much further away at the one whom had retreated at the start.

His aim with the senbon was meant to be lethal. He was relatively certain she had prepared a substitution the same as himself, and didn’t want to allow her the opportunity not to fully defend herself, as Hanza had been forced to do. The senbon would be aimed toward the throat with a focus on the carotid artery. These projectiles would pass through his barrier effortlessly.

Being as fast moving as they were, without an accessory speed technique it seemed Izumi and her clones were not capable of outrunning Hanza’s nitrogen deposits. He kept them easily beneath each of their feet, biding his time to make a definitive attack while remaining in place within his protective bubble.

Izumi should have expected the boy to use the barrier after all she had seen him use it before. Izumi was surprised he was able to react in time. While Izumi had the clear physical advantage it appeared that his reactions were quite fast. Worse still, Izumi wasn’t quite sure how to deal with the barrier. Hanza would turn his back on Izumi and throw something at the clone that was currently flanking him, the clone would barely react in time to dodge the clone further away would take cover while Izumi prepared herself for Hanza to turn her way, unsure what exactly he was doing however her reaction didn’t require her to register what he was doing to react. When she would see his hand move the young woman would make a half tiger seal. With a crack of electricity sparks would arc out from Izumi reflecting whatever it was back at him and the barrier. Izumi could barely register that something was coming however her early warning from him targeting the clones first gave her enough time. The clone that Hanza threw the objects at first was ready for a counter attack and didn’t waste the opportunity it had with Hanza’s back turned. Making a series of five hand signs, a fireball would erupt from the clone and upon reaching a distance of two meters from the boy it would expand around him and the barrier in the blink of an eye, encompassing them both. While Izumi doubted that he would experience the heat from her technique it would obscure his vision, Izumi would take this opportunity to retreat and think up a strategy. As she did, a loud crack sounded across the battlefield as a lightning bolt struck a spire not too far from where Hanza was standing when she retreated.  Izumi figured she could use this to her advantage somehow. Izumi would watch and observe from a distance wondering if the heat of her prison would be enough to break his barrier, regardless she had time to ponder her predicament. The young woman really did not want to injure Hanza but if she wanted to continue in the exams, there was no other option.

With what seemed like completely unsuccessful hits from his tossed senbon, Hanza would hear a loud crack like lightning. Only briefly after that point would a small clink sound as his senbon returned at him and fell flat against the barrier. With little time to react after the lightning strike, Hanza would feign a flinch into another senbon toss toward the version of Izumi whom was furthest away as a last resort as he feared the attack launching toward him in that moment would shatter his barrier. To his relief, the ball of flame expanded around him and his barrier, engulfing it all but not harming him in any way. It seemed a temporary stalemate had been formed. All Hanza knew was that he was currently safe and that his nitrogen deposits were still in his control, circling around the battlefield in the relative areas he had left them. This battle had all erupted so quickly and Hanza had begun to feel like a sitting duck. Izumi was no one to be toyed with and her physical prowess was second to no genin he knew.

As he sat within his bubble during the standstill, he wondered if she had any way of knowing whether or not she had dealt critical wounds or not. He couldn’t see through the opaque flame orb that surrounded him, so it was unlikely that she had sight of him. Izumi Karisuma was a blazing flame amongst a dreary world. She was fighting with a vigor and determination that Hanza could not help but appreciate. When that orb of fire came down, or when Hanza’s barrier came down, the final motions of this battle would likely commence. That would be when decisive action took place. Her clones were confusing, as Hanza never had the opportunity to make a definitive choice to utilize his powerful combination attack. It would’ve been too risky and he could have easily missed and left himself with no offensive measures.

As he continued to think, Hanza brought 4 of the 5 nitrogen pools back to himself, inside the safety of his barrier just beneath the surface. The fifth remained beneath the shirt at izumi’s starting location.

Izumi’s plan had worked, the boy was trapped inside the prison of fire. The Izumi furthest away would make a single Tiger hand sign and as it focused on the katon chakra of the orb the top of it would glow white before a fireball would erupt from the top. Izumi didn’t want to hesitate and rushed forward towards the smoke and ash, kunai drawn and her left hand crackling with electricity. Izumi had controlled the pace the entire fight, as she had done against Kisei. Her mistakes in that battle had come when she had hesitated to speak or to plan. There was no room for error against this opponent whom she respected so much. If she were to hesitate her emotions may begin to cloud her thoughts and that would create a window for him to react. As the fireball crashed down the Izumi clone would cry out, a senbon in her neck. The clones now all dissipated it occurred to Izumi that she had no way to substitute out of any damage. The thoughts of the substitution jutsu brought her mind back to the shirt that Hanza removed, and she was sure to note its location mentally as she charged forward at her maximum speed. Hoping that the barrier was destroyed by this intense attack, Izumi would send a high kick through the smoke towards where the boy’s head would be. Given her strength and speed the blow would easily knock the boy to the ground should it connect. Even blocking the blow would send the boy sprawling to the ground although at least it would protect his skull from the hard kick. Should the boy swap places with the shirt, Izumi would make a half ram signal and send a bolt of lightning at the boys new location sending him flying back into one of the spires that had been struck by lightning seconds before. Izumi was exhausted having exerted a ton of energy up to this point in the battle. It was fast and vicious, the actions up to this point having taken place in under a minute.

Above, some sort of massive explosion would occur and finally, his barrier dissipated. As he looked up and around to determine what was going on, he drew his kunai and watched, noticing just too late to avoid an incoming kick from Izumi. His right arm caught the blow while he would instinctively stab at her ankle with his kunai in the left. He knew sprawling tk the ground would be a death sentence here, so he opted to exchange with his shirt at this point. It was all coming to a grand finale, and it seemed only moments had passed throughout this battle. It had to have been one of the fastest, albeit flashiest battles.

Hanza hoped he hadn’t caused any irreparable damage to his friend. Perhaps that philosophy had been one that stopped him from doing anything considerably damaging this entire match. Maybe Hanza had just been hoping he could have a friend. His psyche was broken up by now, and as he recovered from his substitution he would look up to see Izumi preparing a lightning strike he couldn’t have evaded. She stood atop his nitrogen deposits. He had only one thing left to show her he wasn’t a complete and utter pushover. A friendly parting gift. It seemed time had frozen completely as he looked up at her and gave her his signature gentle smile. The nitrogen beneath her feet erupting into his Binding Frost technique, encasing her up to her waist in ice. Immediately he would activate his Icicle blossom, three of the spikes piercing an inch into her left leg, and the forth growing slowly until it just gently kissed her throat, as he had willed it.

The lightning that connected to his chest didn’t dish out anything much in terms of shocking pain. It was the raw energy of the strike that knocked Hanza completely off of his feet and carried him back, no way for him to stop it. Just as he believed maybe the jutsu hadn’t ended him actually, he collided with the pillar behind him, feeling himself slam into it and something in his lower back crack, just before his head smashed into the metal, knocking him into a nearly unconscious daze.

Lightning crashed, striking the pillar and electrocuting him. He slid down its length and onto the ground with a thud, completely and totally unconscious. Izumi Karisuma had won the fight, and Hanza Kōri’s status would remain unknown to physicians for some time as he entered a deep comatose.

With lightning striking came a single proctor, black and white in colour as though made of a greyscale palette. The Kumogakure shinobi looked from the unconscious form of Hanza to the weakened looking form of Izumi. With a voice magnifyed through means of chakra, he spoke to the ears of those close enough to listen. "The winner of this battle is Izumi Karisuma, she moves on to the semi finals." With that the proctor would move to silently grab up the unconscious form of Hanza and shunshin away with him to take him to the Kumogakure no Sato hospital for medical care.

As Izumi had predicted, the young boy had swapped with his shirt when her hard kick connected, the boy unable and unwilling to withstand hand to hand combat with the young Karisuma. To Izumi's surprise however, she would feel intense pain and cold on her left thigh as icicles dug into it. Izumi's eyes would widen as she noticed she was unable to move and that another icicle was heading straight for her throat luckily, the sharp shard of ice stopped just short its frozen kiss teasing her neck. Her bolt had struck true, sending the young boy flying backwards. Izumi was frozen in place forced to watch what she had done. There was a nasty sounding crack as the boys head collided with the stone spire. To make matters worse for him a lightning bolt slammed down from the sky and struck the pillar a mere moment from his impact. Her inhibited emotions came flooding back at once as the reality of what she had done set it, sparks would shout out from Izumi yet again freeing her from her bonds. Tears in her eyes she ran over to Hanza screaming his name, she had only intended to win not to kill him. The young man was motionless, and the proctor wouldn't allow her to get any closer so she couldn't determine if he was alive but she swore she saw a faint rising and falling of his chest. The pain in Izumi's leg had been postponed, adrenaline and fear had taken over. Izumi rushed out of the arena, the pain beginning to set in. Izumi would follow Hanza to the hospital desperate to ensure that he whom she had begun to thought of as a friend was okay. The young woman was silently weeping as she followed, guilt running her thoughts and the pain in her leg starting to set in. Izumi would heal her wounds as she limped along, ignoring the pain from every step in order to advance onward to support the young man she had come to be so fond of. I guess this is what it is to be a kunoichi.
