Zeref sat on his roof in a cross legged position, his sword laid across his lap. In one hand he held a smooth sharpening rock, in the other he held rag with polish on it. Zeref would slide the blade across the rock, and then use the rag to apply the polish as well as get rid of any small shavings from the blade. Zeref would repeat this a few more times until he was satisfied, once he thought the blade was sharp enough he stood up and held the blade out in front of him parallel to the ground, looking down the edge to check for imperfections. The sun reflected off the polished blade a signal that it was time to leave for his next mission.

Zeref walked out of him apartment, his sword on his back, his kunia hanging on his hip, three on each side, and his gauntlets on his hands. His attire did not match that of a shinobi, but of a mercenary, of a born killer. Although he looked out of place, the villagers paid him no mind, some even waving to him, he has made himself known with in the village, taking on missions, and joining a squad, word has spread of him quickly. To Zeref it was only a matter of time before he caught the eye of the kage, a genin who was quickly moving up through the ranks. In the less than a month Zeref was mere days away from becoming a chunnin without the need of the exams. As Zeref headed towards the village gate his mind started to wander back to the teaching and words of his father when he was a child.

"Listen closely boy, you have one purpose in life. To serve, to be a obedient dog of war." Noc, Zerefs father looked down at the beaten boy no older then eight. "Beyond that, you are nothing, just a tool, a weapon made to be pointed in a direction and unleashed." The boy looked at his father with hateful eyes, but only spoke two words. "Yes father."

Zeref could see the village gate now, a few village shinobi were one guard, leaning back on the wall talking among themselves , Zeref gave them a nod as he past them. The last known sighting of the creatures were near the the rice paddy fields, Zeref had just hunted down some boar a few days ago, he assumed the creatures were again, a herd of boar. Boar were very common around here, and spread like wild fire when they mated, but they were easy pray when you knew how to track them. Zeref had been taught how to track since he was young, so tracking down another herd of boar like he did a few days ago wouldn't be to hard for him to repeat.

Entering the fields it was easy to spot the signs of boar activity, the crops were torn up to shreds, either from the boars eating, running, or from them rolling in the mud to cool their bodies down. ]Zeref knelt down near some destroyed plants and touched the tracks that were there. It was easy to spot the tracks, a hog’s prints are nearly square in shape and typically shorter than a similarly sized deer track. If the tip of the toe is blunt, a hog likely made it. Zeref knew why crops got destroyed, they don't really like the tops but rather the roots. Hogs rip ground to shreds wanting the tender roots and any grub, worm, or acorn they turn up at the same time. Zeref moved some of the destroyed crops away from the ground to see how wet it was. His early years taught him that the relative moisture of a rooted area is a good clue to its age, but hogs roam far while feeding and he knew not spend too much time watching a feeding area. Zeref touched the ground and felt the wetness of it, meaning it wasn't that old from when the boar had past through. Zeref stood up and looked around the area slightly before moving closer to the wood line to look for more signs of boar. Once at the wood line he looked at the bark on the lower trunks of the trees, spotting rub marks from the boars who have used the tree to itch, he entered the wood line and looked for more signs of boar movement, the hunt had begun.

Taking slowly, soft steps Zeref stalked his prey, finding small signs of the boars ever few yards. What He needed was a wallow, with the day heating up the hogs would most likely be found laying around in one. Zeref knew of a dried up river bed not to far from the crops, it was the best chance of finding the boars that were destroying the crops again. The dried up river bed woluld provided a good nesting area, and wasn't far from known food. After walking a few hundred yards Zeref stopped walking and jumped into the tree tops, landing on a branch that was overhead. Zeref moved branch to branch he would glance down, after a few minutes he stopped spotting a heavily traveled trail, with a better lead Zeref started to follow the trail. About another hundred yards of jumping from branch to branch he stopped once again, just ahead of him, were four boars, one big and three small. The large boar was laying in a mud pit, other smaller ones were digging up the ground near the plants.

Zeref unclipped six kunai from his belt holding two in each hand, he slowed his breathing and watched the movement of the three small ones. Zeref taking the chance to catch the boars off guard, he threw the four kunai toward three smaller boar. Two kunai embedded themselves into each of the smaller boars killing them easily. The large one, seeing the smaller ones fall to the ground became spooked and quickly took off running. The Kunai that were stuck into the smaller boars, melted away forming pools of Koton, after a second and a few hand signs, five steel wolf pups form out of the pool of Koton. The wolf pups start to bite, and scratch at the remaining boar. Even as the boar gore, and destroy the steel pups they simply reform and continue to attack. The boars would try to flee after knocking a pup off, but another one would be right there, heading the boar towards the center of the small clearing. One of the steel pups jumped on the back of one of the boar and turned into five steel balls which then exploded sending shrapnel in all directions. The boar the pup jumped on fell to the ground dead, the large boar was the last one in the area. There was no way to tell if that was all of the boar that eat away at the crops but it was a start, for now the mission was completed.

The steel pups fell to pools of koton, and then reformed into kunai after a few seconds. Zeref gathered them up clipping them back onto his belt, the sun was in the middle of the sky meaning it was around noon now. Zeref could hand in this mission, take another and complete it before sun down if he really wanted to. He didn't care about using the boars as food, or getting their hides, that wasn't what the mission called for this time. With this mission completed it marked another D ranked mission completed, he only needed a few more tasks until he could request to speak to the kage, and ask to be placed at chunnin level and skip the exams.

Zeref headed back towards the village, his mind going back to his past yet again.

Zerefs father trained him, taught him how to survive, kill, fight, at least up until his death partly at Zerefs hands. Since that day Zerefs only goal was to get strong enough to never be under someone else's thumb, to never be used for the purpose his father tried to turn him into. As of now Zeref was a shinobi of kumogakure, even without his father it seemed fate wanted Zeref to be a weapon, someones weapon, Zeref would only be a pawn of the higher ranks of the village for so long, for now he needed to be a pawn to be able to get stronger till the time was right.
