The meeting at the Tsuchikage's stone went well enough, no better or worse than he could have imagined it to be so. And both of his soon to be students, or more so, allies... rather, were uniquely interesting. The details of which would unfold as they were, but for Karumo, he was more intrigued by each of them individually and for the moment, he was planning to prod at those details. The first of his targets would be the beauty rather than the beast of their grouping, he would wait around until after the meeting, catching her attention and telling her to meet him in his office as soon as she could. Adding nothing more than that, he would arrive back to his office in the administration building, flickering away as soon as he exited the building they were originally in. He'd been practicing that one for a while hoping to perfect a graceful exit and one where they wouldn't necessarily be able to follow his movements. Not unless these genin had perception like jounin, but he doubted that much, but his doubts always had a chance of falling out in the end.

When he arrived back at his office, he would take a seat at his desk after grabbing a water bottle from the room with a fridge down the hall. Sitting at his desk and leaning back in his chair and waiting for Cinder to arrive whenever that would be. Opening his book to read while he awaited her arrival, his office was fairly standard. A wooden desk and comfy chair that swiveled and rolled around, two more chairs of a simple nature and made of wood on the opposite side of his. Different wooden amenities of varying types but similar in color and style were around the room built in a half circle fashion. The same beige/brown walls and a dark carpet complete the room, the tones and colors blended after some time and the style fell deaf to Karumo's eyes seeing it each and every day. He noticed the smallest details of it, the little chip on his side of the desk and the places the light would shine through the window openings and such. He kept the windows open for the air to blow through, even on the hottest days since temperature had no real affect on him.

For now, he sipped on his water and read his book until his guest would arrive to his office. It was a rather mundane day, he'd cleared his duties and passed off his paperwork for the next day or so in order to keep up with his new comrades. Even if it was a nice time to relax, he unfortunately chose to meet in his office, next time he'd have to find something that reminded him less of work to do this at. Still, for now, he patiently waited for a knock at the door or for Cinder to arrive and enter in herself, then would come time to close his book and let his eyes roll up to her. Telling her to enter if she didn't already or offer a seat in front of him, waving with his hand leisurely as he set the book down. Giving her a chance to take a seat or decline before he would continue on with anything else, just yet at least.

After their group meeting, Karumo had explicitly, although he had done it with hints of subtlety, told her to meet with him in his office as soon as she was able. Cinderella took that to mean immediately, unless she had to take some time to use the lady’s room. His following body flicker out of the area, leaving not one trace of his presence, made Cinderella shake her head, knowing she would have to take the long way round walking through the long, dreary walls of the Tsuchikage Tower with faces of late politicians and authoritative figures throughout Iwagakure’s history scrutinising her from beyond the grave with their faded faces and desaturated colours.

The journey was long, but not confusing. She’d been to the Tsuchikage Tower plenty of times and had memorised most of the layouts, so it would’ve been embarrassing, even and especially to herself, to fail to locate the Tsuchikage’s office even if she had personally never stepped foot inside the room. She passed by several ninja on the way, some who held themselves with experience, and others whom she was confident were only there due to their administrative capabilities, from the way they shivered as she sauntered past. Well, most of the capable ones would have to be stationed out in the field, so it made a queer sense that the tower wasn’t filled with elites sitting around with dulling skills.

She paused outside the Tsuchikage’s office, specifically standing by his secretary’s table in case the woman would restrict her entry, though when no resistance came, she supposed it was only natural she was being expected, and that the man wasn’t entertaining some other company. Still, she gave a simple knock on the door to inform him of her presence, before walking in and closing the door behind her.

“You called?” she repeated suggestively from that afternoon’s greeting, cheekily, perhaps, as her eyes drank in the interior decor to the Tsuchikage’s office, all coloured a shade of brown and made of wood. It gave off a very calming atmosphere that reminded her of home; of course, home was a relative concept for her since she’d stayed in Iwagakure near her whole life, away from her parents in the Land of Earth’s capital. She spotted the man of interest sitting behind his desk, a simple rectangular piece of furniture, reclining on a swivel armchair.

Following his response, or if he gave one, she made her way to one of the two simple wooden chairs, opting to sit down in the one on the right, while waiting for Karumo to proceed with the topic he had in mind.

His minor musings on his book were interrupted by a knock at his door, Karumo's eyes would roll up and he would close the book on his thumb as he saw Cinderella enter. "Yeah, please, come in, take a seat..." he offered while he let his hand hover and wave, his palm up, towards one of the seats in front of his desk. With that, he would slid a small piece of white paper as a book mark to save his place and set the book down cover first on his desk. Waiting a moment for her to move up and take in the room before he would add or say anything else.

Once she had sat down, his eyes would move to meet hers and keep eye contact before speaking up. "I called you here because I just want to get to know the squad members before tomorrow's mission and all..." he let his purple eyes run over her features briefly, looking for any reaction she might have to anything he would say. He debated on where he should go from there, a short pause for his musings, he reached to the nearby water bottle he kept at his desk, remembering his manners as he did so. "Sorry, would you like any water, coffee, tea, anything?" he would ask before taking a sip of his own water. If she accepted, he would briefly pause and tend to getting whatever drink she chose if anything.

If his offer declined, he would remain seated and continued on with what he had originally intended to ask and move on to, "You didn't seem to have much to add at our short meeting. Beyond that, I also looked at your old squad file, and despite incredible results for what you had done at the time..." he paused and let his eyes return to hers to try and make eye contact, looking for any reaction in that short pause. "Well... you didn't return to a squad and trying to advance through the ninja corps, at least in a traditional manner after all."

"I just want to make sure that dragging you into this squad isn't something I'll regret or that you'll resent or both. The missions we'll be going on and situations I plan to have this squad prepped for are far closer to things that you might find ANBU or Jounin teams working on. So... I just want to make sure that you're alright with everything as it is. I mean, you'd most likely be placed on a squad eventually, it's part of being a ninja in the end, but you should get where I'm going with this..." Karumo continued on. He didn't think anything against her personally, he just wanted to erase all doubt that could exist. And on top of that, confirm in her that this was something she wanted and commit to after the events and tragedy of her last squad.

Her lax gait to the wooden chair Karumo had directed her to was accompanied by the natural sway of her hips, though as with most times, it fell in line with the rest of her walk, a subconscious gesture she’d cultivated from years of observing people’s actions and reactions to each other. As she sat and crossed her legs, her eyes glanced down at the cover of the book, flitting to the natural, hard, smooth wooden surface of the desk between them, varnished with a thin coat of shine. Few other accessories decorated the surface, leaving it mostly bare save for the single book in Karumo’s possession.

Cinderella raised a brow at his outspoken request, even as her sensei and her Tsuchikage, to learn more about her personally before the next day’s mission-slash-training. She recalled the same man sitting unhidden behind any desks, simply resting on a bench with his two students, just moments ago at the Stone of the Tsuchikage. She recalled the words that assured they would get to know each other. Maybe as the sensei, he was expecting to understand them a deal more? Maybe the responsibilities of running a village wouldn’t permit him the leisure time to spend with his teammates after a mission? Or perhaps he was playing matchmaker between herself and the self-introduced assassin? Whatever the reason, the raised brow was the only indication of her response, as she turned down his offer for a beverage. “No, thank you.”

Still reclining in his chair, the very sight of authority and dominance despite his experience, he continued. Her old squad, her achievements, her reaction to its disbandment; each tragic event he recalled was the opening and closing of different chapters in her life, penned down in her mind like a never-ending fairytale of a girl who wanted something more than what she was. The allure on her face, the shine in her eyes, and the coyness in her smile didn’t react to her teammate’s death. He hadn’t been someone she had cared about, teammate or otherwise. It would have been a shame to mourn over his grave in the pouring rain amid the black skies to simply lament she knew little more than how he looked and what his nametag bore.

As her Lord Tsuchikage finished expressing his concerns, her smile would intensify a fraction. “Well, I didn’t think there was much to add, Lord Tsuchikage,” she admitted with a (seemingly) innocent tip of her head. “After all, like you said: we’ll all find out more about each other as time progresses, right?”

“You needn’t worry about my commitment to this squad. I don’t resent it, and I can assure you I’m not willing to tarnish my record, so you won’t regret it. Don’t worry. I won’t have any problems with Mahikari, lest he start some.”

His offer for a drink rejected, Karumo leaned back into his own chair and took a sip of his water anyways and set it back down. He moved onto his own concerns and questions of his own, prodding at what issues he could find and waiting to take note of how she would respond if she weren't too angry at the notion itself. In the short pause between her smile expanded a bit, his eyes would furrow for just a brief second to give away his confusion at it, wondering what he had said that triggered her humor. If it was something funny after all...

She gave her reasoning, about not adding much to their meeting, which he figured would have been her answer. Honestly, Karumo wasn't sure if there was any reason in questioning her short reply in itself, more of a rhetorical analysis to help justify his other questions if anything. A tilt of her head as she agreed with his bit about learning more... almost sarcastic in nature? He wondered about that, if that were the case, he started to feel like he might get taken for a loop in a second. His worries put away for a brief moment as she tried to re-assure him about her being on the squad, but her focus was on causing problems and continuing on the status quo almost, and that wouldn't be good enough for Karumo.

He would give a half smile in return to her answer, giving a short pause between and scratching the side of his face just in front of his ear, using his opposite arm to do so. Gathering his thoughts, "I'm not worried about problems being caused, you know..." he raised an eyebrow to see her reaction briefly, but wouldn't give her break enough to respond before he continued on, "We're all old enough to know how to act around each other. Especially on missions above all else..."

"I don't know if I were underselling it, but I was serious when I said that this squad will not be subjected to the same standards as the normal genin. I expect much more of each of you, though I won't hold you back at all compared to anyone else because you fail to meet my expectations."

"The missions I plan to put us on, will extend beyond your genin years in both tenure and gravity of prowess. You both exist and excel in more... subtle.. arts. I'll let your imagination run with it, but I hope to find people I can count on for missions in the future as well. The missions I plan to bring you two into will not be saving cats from trees, but things far beyond that in danger, and if you qualify beyond that.... then I plan to save you for even more beyond that as you both grow as well..."

"Assuming that, you know, you guys are up to the challenge and prepared to take on hell head first. That decision will be up to you, but being on my squad, and sticking around... it will take far more than complacency Cinderella..." he gave with a sly smile at the end as he waited for a response. Or some indication of how she felt about his plans, a specialized squad for himself to rely upon down the road, those willing and capable in many of the more traditional skills of shinobi. If they were up to the task, Karumo was willing to throw them through every hoop and obstacle he could find. To test them and strain them in ways they can't imagine, and maybe... just maybe, they would be some of the most dangerous ninja in Iwagakure no Sato, and the best of his prodigies as well, even if they were a bit too old for that part.

Karumo’s lips turned into a gentle smile, scratching the side of his face. He seemed to allow a small pause to settle between them, though if it was a conscious act, Cinderella couldn’t quite determine. He certainly hadn’t been lying earlier that day about having inherited the position of Tsuchikage for qualities other than brute strength and astonishing physical capabilities. Perhaps the silence was a sign of grimmer things to come, a deafening crescendo of nothing to intimidate her. Perhaps he was carefully considering her words, scrutinishing her before their mission. Perhaps it was a closet hobby to leave people waiting, but he finally ended it.

Cinderella remained silent throughout his end of the dialogue. As she didn’t intend to cause any trouble for her team, since it involved the Tsuchikage himself, assuming Mahikari was able to at least avoid disappointing her with his skills, she filed his first statement away. Maybe at a later time when she was going up to mischief, it would serve as a warning, but nothing of the sort now. From what she’d seen of the hardened assassin a year her senior, he had the build and instincts to react genuinely to any situation, although his failure to recognise the Tsuchikage could account for a less preparatory mindset.

His following comment came out of nowhere, though. Her brows furrowed slightly, just barely noticeable, as she entertained what the words could insinuate. Was her Tsuchikage implying something lewd? Or were most people in power just more prone to honesty with their desires?

Karumo continued with the dangers that they as a trio would be undertaking under the guise of his team. It… was mostly jargon to her ears, the same content being preached by the academy, if only bumped up several notches. The gist of it had been delivered that afternoon in that small circular room they’d first met in. Cinderella was already aware of the terms when she stepped into his office at his request, thinking they would be covering more personal issues, instead of circling back to her dedication to her squad. She supposed she couldn’t fault him; her past would leave anyone either concerned or suspicious, and it was good grace that had Karumo falling into the former.

"Again, Lord Tsuchikage, you have nothing to be concerned of," she repeated. "I don't plan to shirk my duties; they'll be carried out to perfection on my end. My decision on the matter is already clear."

Kaurmo listened in as she tried to put his qualms, as potentially unwarranted as they might have been inherently, but it was partially his nature and even more so his own curiosity to push at something like that. Still, she gave off a radiance of confidence in her abilities, Karumo smiled slyly at the notion as she offered that her decision was made and clear at hand. Karumo carried his smile through for a moment with a bit of a chuckle, it was certainly no small task he had planned ahead of them, he only hoped that they would be up to the task. Through thick and thin, working together, and solving problems, the tasks ahead of them would grow harder with each mission and there would definitely be no time or room for petty squabbling. Though, Karumo didn't think that would be their problem, but perhaps a bit of ego from all of them, crashing against each others confidence.

Leaning back in his chair a bit further, Karumo would chime up, "Well, as long as you're okay with everything and confident that you're ready for whatever is to come our way..." he gave a heavy exhale and sat back up into his chair. Putting his elbows on his desk and folding his hands together, crossing his fingers as he looked on towards her.

Luckily for her, she didn't know what waited for her at tomorrow's practice, but for the time being, he wasn't sure there was anything more that he could add or anything more that Cinderella would give. Perhaps asking about herself might be in order, but that would be a bit awkward for the moment. For now, he'd decline to delve further... leaving his musings off for the time and giving her a chance to rest before tomorrow.

"I suppose that's it for now, you'll find out more about tomorrow when it arrives. If you have any questions for me that you held back now would be the time, otherwise... you're free to go, make sure to get some rest and come prepared." he would add with a calm tone and normal demeanor, taking his elbows off the table and sitting up straight again after he finished. If she had something to add he would hear it out, otherwise he would stand as he prepared to dismiss her, a gesture of courtesy.

Though, he would interrupt her walk out after she had made it halfway across the room, "Hey, Cinder..." he paused hoping to catch her attention in some manner, "You may want to skip the heels and dress tomorrow, go for something a bit more... comfortable, just as a warning." he added with a soft half smile in her direction to take away any potential malice in his words. Whether she responded to that quip or not, he would stay standing behind his desk with his hands behind his back. Preparing to go back to whatever he would have next on his agenda as she leaved, and preparing for tomorrow's adventure.

After she was finished with her short reassurance of her confidence, Karumo leaned back in his chair. His following words were no less authoritative, but they carried the sliver of concession that her words were final. His sentence trailed off midway, after he’d considered her preparation on the issue, though Cinderella managed to finish it for him.

“I am,” she confirmed as he exhaled, toying with the idea that this entire interrogation was one of a series of tests the man before her had set to evaluate her commitment to the village.

His hands folded together on the table, fingers interlocking and elbows resting easy on the desk that he’d inherited from the previous Akira Kazako, a man who’d retired in another village. His gaze bore a certain twinkle of mischief as they leveled into hers, a sort of excitement that she was strapped in for a wild ride. Perhaps it had something to do with being a sensei, or even that of being the Tsuchikage, but there was something about their situation that humoured him to put such vibrance in his look.

The Sekuro then concluded their session, with a gentle but firm reminder to again speak up if she’d had questions in reserve, something he’d almost repeatedly asked throughout their session. Was he trying to pry more into her life, admission from herself about the life story he already had in black and white at his fingertips? Was he trying to gain insight into the do’s and don’ts that made up Cinderella, peeping through the carefully cultivated aura of mystery that was second nature? Perhaps he intended to get a more intimate feel for his students, rather than wait for the natural bonding that would certainly come regardless of volition should she and Mahikari pass the next day’s trials, tradition for all ninja taking a team. Was he trying to ease her worries at the next day’s doubtlessly grueling task, or was he opening a window for her to mine some information?

“Details on the next day’s exercise, maybe,” she questioned, testing the waters if he was as direct as he tried to present himself. “Assuming that information’s on the table, Lord Tsuchikage.”

She gave her assurance again, it would be enough for the time, a small concession of her assurance. If it came down to it, and the strenuousness of his test got to them, he could use this moment as a sort of motivation to her word, if she would need it. But for Karumo, he didn't peg her as one to back down lightly from anything, and he didn't think his test would be enough to physically or mentally break them, only to push them near their limits a bit. Or beyond that bit, it would really depend on their resolve and tenacity in the end.

Continuing on, giving her one last chance to ask of anything she wished, he hadn't really limited anything as far as discussion and said whatever she wanted, so it was little surprise that she went to ask about tomorrow's event. Well, there was some surprise, but nothing that Karumo could hold against her given the lack of detail to his inherent prodding about. He smiled a bit and laughed as he leaned back a bit, "No, no, it's fine to ask and all, but you'll have to understand that I can't tell you everything ahead of time..."

He cleared his throat a bit and continued on, "Tomorrow's exercise will be a sort of test... of your physical abilities. Your tenacity, in the form of a survival exercise and test of physical might." he would give a brief pause before continuing on, "Just something for me to test you guys under adversity and see where your strengths lie, I'm sure you understand why that would be a bit of a necessity for the squad..." he would pause off and give a slight smile. Knowing in the back of his mind what they would have to endure, but for the time being, he'd let them pass on with that information, it wouldn't hurt or help them in the end. Even if Cinder did relay everything to Mahikari somehow, he doubted that either of them would really be able to make anything of it. Since his plans were really known only to himself.

"Consider it a survival exercise, wrapped up in some basic skills training and some combat basics along with it." he added with a smile and nodded his head forward a bit. Whether she would accept that answer or not would be up to her, but it would really be all that Karumo would offer on the subject, wanting to keep the details of it mostly a surprise until they arrived at their location tomorrow. If anything, it would be fun letting them squirm and wonder about it until tomorrow morning and the time was upon them. Though, he would sit and listen in for her response waiting for it if she were to give any.

Otherwise, he would reiterate that that's everything he needed and the rest of his short farewell message, that is, until tomorrow morning. It would certainly be an early start at the very least.

Cinderella nodded as Karumo revealed not everything would be provided. There would need to be some uncertainties she couldn’t prepare for. It was only fair to test the extent of their preparation, a callback to his earlier proclamation that their squad would be considered a league above average. In her chair, she listened aptly as Karumo relayed the details of the exercise, knowing fully well that any information was better than not, and she would already have an edge over Mahikari in this small plane, unless he too would receive the same treatment. A variable to be considered again.

Survival exercise and physical might… She could not say those were appealing. It certainly ruled out the much more subtle information gathering exercises she’d heard over the grapevine, though being the Tsuchikage’s squad would necessitate they take a more frontline role than others surely. Her only gripe with what she was given was the abject brawn over brain injected into the exercise, certainly nothing like what she’d expect from a scholar such as Karumo. Unless that in itself was a trick and this information was a setup, Cinderella would have to plot far in advance to have any hope of outdoing Mahikari, or the elements.

Karumo’s smile eased none of the dissatisfaction broiling beneath the surface. She doubted she’d be allowed to use the full extent of her combative capabilities, less her lava led to more desertification of the already barren land that made up most of the Land of Earth. Alas, it was something to think about whilst she appropriated herself for dinner,

“Thank you for the information, Lord Tsuchikage,” she spoke as she stood, the chair audibly sliding against wood. “I promise neither Mahikari nor I will disappoint.”

Should Karumo still intend to interrupt her walk halfway through with his suggestion of her donning a more appropriate attire rather than her preferred mini-dress, she’d turn to face him over her shoulder, regarding the seriousness on his face and the tone of his voice. She considered if it was plain humor, seeing as she was already very well-versed in fighting in a dress and heels. However, if it was her Tsuchikage’s order, she would give it no second thought and adhere it to the word.

“I’ll keep that in mind, Lord Tsuchikage, though I doubt anything more comfortable will be any less distracting,” she would supply, before continuing out the door, leaving him to his own musings.

Karumo gave little and vague information, he doubted it would really cement anything other than more thoughts and questions in the end. He watched as she stood up and thanked him for the bit, it wasn't necessary to thank him or anything, but he smiled and nodded in return. Continuing on with a bit about not disappointing, he certainly hoped so, but that would be to be decided during their test. At the very least, he wouldn't let anyone wipe out during the test, which would put a little pressure on him. He watched her begin to exit the room, Karumo absolutely intended to make his comment about her attire, though, in as polite a manner as he could.

It wasn't so much an order as it was a suggestion for her, she was free to do what she chose and made her most comfortable. She gave response, keeping his notion in mind and a short quip about the distracting nature of it. Karumo would chuckle a bit and nod his head. It wasn't how he meant his comment to be taken, but so be it, she exited from the door and he'd let it be for the time being. The door closed quietly with the clicking of the latch and the door stammering shut, leaving him to his own thoughts again.

Karumo crossed his hands across his chest as he leaned back in his chair, crossing his leg over himself and letting his ankle rest on his knee. Now would be the perfect time to have one of his cigars, a chance to reflect on tomorrow's event, but his paperwork would never let him relax too much. Not to mention preparations for tomorrow, it had been a while since he'd been to that hollow. For the genin, they'd most certainly have a rough time of it, but it never took Karumo long to adjust to these things. At least, over the years of training there, he had adjusted more quickly and developed a tolerance to it. For the genin, they'd suffer at first, painfully, until they became used to it, and beyond that, he didn't know how long they would be able to take it before any other complications arose in the training.

Regardless, Karumo went back to his work, his book calling out to him as he went back to the menial work he was always assigned. Waiting in anticipation of tomorrow's test, thinking of different ways he could prepare his new genin squad.
