Fukai

Fukai

It had been a month since Fukai’s meeting with Karumo, where he had agreed to enter the ANBU so that he may investigate its problems from the inside. The special ops force had been paying less attention to the stand in kage as they were expected to, slacking off on work and sometimes not turning up. It was a tough predicament for Karumo as he didn’t really have any way to openly enforce his word towards the whole division. However the pair decided to handle this, they would need their finesse filled gloves on. Fukai had made it his problem when he had taken the task.

So here he had been, working for the ANBU for a while now, experiencing firsthand the internal culture of the force. One thing was for certain, the other operatives had definitely not accepted him into their ranks, often discluding him from anything to do with prolonged contact. Fukai took mostly solo missions that didn’t really end up changing much from what he was doing previously. But that was to be expected. Fukai was well known by those who knew everybody, and his connection to Karumo was written on his face.

Fukai had been focusing mostly on Subterra in the recent months, and only trying to warm up and get used to his new lot. He hoped that after a little while people would stop watching him so much so he could start his investigation. More or less this had been true. Today the headquarters was fairly empty, and Fukai didn’t have much to do. He may as well go and check out the files in the ANBU archives. He had been trying to stay away from the place, as reading was not his forte. He dreaded going through the papers, but he could hardly ask someone else to in his stead.

Despite his discomfort, the purple eyed male found himself leafing through various reports and meetings. It was true that most ANBU operations were things of secrecy and all traces would be covered by the village, but there was still need for a certain amount of administration and record keeping, even though specifics about missions were left off.

Fukai was looking for some sort of pattern in the words and numbers. Something that he could trace back and provide a lead that he could follow. Half an hour later he happened upon a record of personel checkups, the like of which gave a record of who had up to them on a bi weekly basis. Looking through it at first didn’t reveal much, it didn’t seem like it was unusual for someone to miss the meeting. Fukai went further back, comparing recent reports with older ones. There was this one name that had started popping up as absent every so often. Upon further inspection, it seemed like it was every month. Two agents from the same family, called Denshu. As to why they were missing on the regular, that was unknown.

It was half a lead, but truth be told, he didn’t know where to find the other half. After fluffing around through the records for another couple of hours he was fed up. It was time to get out and do something. Fukai marched out of the headquarters and towards the Denshu family compound. He was sick of not getting anywhere. He had never been the one for sneaking around, it was time to tackle the problem face on. His plan was to walk up and talk to them. What could go wrong?

The compound was a little way out of the village, not out west, up in the mountains like the Fantomusodo one was, instead it was out in the eastern plains. Knowing this area like the back of his hand, it was quite easy to find the place. A chill ran up his spine as he stood in front of the gate. Behind the gate was the Denshu housing. It was beautiful architecture, seemed quite old also. Fukai stood out the front of the compound for a few minutes, each second dragging out as he waited awkwardly. A perceived eternity had passes before that gate rolled open. The courtyard was mostly empty, a few people out the front were cleaning the ground of leaves and stringing up lights. Some turned and watched him enter from afar. There was no greeting, instead Fukai just meandered his way inside. Once he was a bit further, a small party exited a house and walked up to greet him.

An old man with a washing board forehead spoke up, his mouth forming a polite smile but his eyes weren’t really following through. “Welcome Fukai Fantomusodo to our home. What can we do for you?”
“I wish to hold audience with the elders of the Denshu clan.”
“Oh? Is my attention good enough?” It sounded like they were trying to brush off his visit into some meaningless tea party. They must have known well enough that Fukai wouldn’t have come out here unless it was something serious. Fukai returned a stern answer.
“I am here to discuss your family’s recent slack in devotion to the ANBU.” It was a direct approach, but it had seemed to get the man to treat Fukai seriously.
“Come with me.” All politeness had left his tone. Fukai followed the group back towards the front building.

The jounin was lead around and eventually told to sit in a large room. People were shuffling around, entering the building. About ten minutes later, a small congress had been set up. The old man who had greeted him sat at the head of the room, facing Fukai. He did not look pleased. After everything was in order and people’s shuffling had quietened down, he focussed on his unwanted guest and spoke. “So, you wanted an audience, here we are. We will always cooperate with the wishes of the state, and if you represent them then we will have to hear you out.” It didn’t exactly sound like the most willing of introductions, and every pretense of politeness had been dropped.

Fukai looked up at the leader in the eye, thinking for a few seconds, deciding on which words to use. “The ANBU agents that have your name.. They have been dismissing certain calls and duties. I am here to receive your explanation as to what is going on.”
“And who the hell do you think you are, to come into our home and demand answers? You may be the kage’s dog but don’t be thinking that you are something you aren’t.” The leader sounded exacerbated. It must be strange to have some low levelled agent come in and challenge him.
“Don’t misunderstand, I am not working for the Kage’s benefit, but for the villages’ prosperity.” His tone shifted, gaining gravitas. “YOUR people have pledged their life to the unwavering servitude of this land. They have broken that pledge and now express open disobedience toward the leadership of the village.” Just as Fukai had raised the tone, the leader of the Denshu took it another step.
“Don’t you DARE lecture me, boy! We of the Denshu clan have served selflessly for generations! We had joined Iwagakure on the premise that our own traditions would be respected. But now look at us, your kage was all too quick to forget about their side of the deal, weren’t they! Now when we practice these traditions we get the pleasure of some uppity Fantomusodo in our face!” Fukai calmed down as the leader’s words started to sink in. Now they were getting somewhere.

The old man stared at Fukai expectantly. The purple eyed jounin was not interested in continuing the argument, instead he wanted to explore this new information. “You speak of unfulfilled terms and traditions… Tell me more about it.”
“Why would I do that, we have already put up with disgrace for too long!”
Fukai continued in a lowered tone. “I mean what have said; that I work for the village’s prosperity. That includes the Denshu clan. If you have issues with your current position then I would like to hear them out. The hard faced leader snorted, but began to explain nevertheless.
“Every month, we have a small festival for the new moon. It is a big deal for our family, but no outsiders are allowed to participate. The compound walls are sealed and fortified so that the potential security threat is minimal.” It made sense, this would mean that info on this tradition would be hard to come by. “He hold a big feast to commemorate the feats of our ancestors. The heroes of our grandfathers served the land of stone in it’s previous incarnations, but seems to have been easily forgotten in recent times.” He trailed off. The other clan members in the room seemed to sway with his words. The feeling resonated throughout the room.

The silver haired young man considered his position for a second and then spoke with a little more reverence. “I will get you whatever you need to celebrate as your tradition requires.”
The leader stared down his nose at his guest, not trusting in the man’s word. “It is too late for us to trust the kages of late, even though we will still serve them, they have lost our devotion.”
Fukai would interject. “Then devote yourselves to me. Karumo will not oppose me.” The leader would huff out a laugh in response.
“You are too weak. You are an ant in the grand scale of things.”
“I used to be a speck of dust. And then I grew. I became an ant, and I would grow again, and again. I will not stop until my shadow is cast over this land.” Fukai’s resolve was steeled. His purple eyes locked with the clan leader. They would hold each other’s gaze for a few moments before the leader would turn to a man next to him and whisper in his ear.

There would be some shuffling around, as two bodies entered the room and a large area was cleared around Fukai. “I cannot say that you have not proven yourself. I have heard tales of a monstrous man known as the Violet Wraith, mercilessly lay waste to all threats in the north east. Your strength and proficiency has not gone unnoticed, despite your brash tactlessness.” There was that name again. It seemed like he had unknowingly picked up a title of sorts whilst tending to his pastures. “But you are still not worthy to hold title over the great warriors of Denshu, but it seems like you will not give up. If you still want to proceed, we will hold a test.” The two bodies stood in front of him, one was a small, slight female with a mouse mask. The other was a sturdy man with a boar mask. “Our two ANBU operatives are the creme of the crop. Beat them, and we will acknowledge your strength and swear loyalty to you. Lose, and you will die. Hopefully then we will be finally rid of one purple eyed thorn.” The Denshu leader’s eyes narrowed as he awaited Fukai’s reply.

Fukai’s hands tingled and his blood started to rush around his body. The ball was finally in his court, there was no way he was going to step down now. There was no reason to, this was something that he could grasp. It was a simple fight. Well, really it was a lethal fight against two elite ANBU operatives. The prospect sent shivers down his spine. There was no doubt that this would be by far his strongest challenge yet. He did not hesitate with his answer. “I will beat your men. And when I do, you will bend your knee to me.” The leader nodded, waving them on with his hand to proceed. It seemed like the thought of Fukai’s imminent death had calmed the old man down.

A square arena had been outlined around them. There was a few people around the outside of this track, watching. So this is where they would be fighting. It was a restricted area, which would definitely favour his opponents. They could back him in a corner all too easily. The large man spoke up. “You dare challenge us? Your death won’t be painless.” He growled. Fukai drew his staff, Splinter and looked at the pair. Their builds were strangely mismatched, he wondered how they would go about taking him on.
“Show me the strength of the Denshu, show me your worth.” Fukai offered in response. The man growled and brought out two long rolls of silk with a tennis ball shaped rubber end. He tossed the rubber ends over to his partner and held the other end. The jounin looked over, curious in what they were doing. It looked like they had finished with their preparation. Fukai brandished his staff in front of himself and waited for their initial move.

He almost didn’t see the small flurry of movement from the small woman as she accelerated towards him by herself. It was a solo attack, maybe they were going easy on him in the beginning. Fukai didn’t intent to hold back, whatever the case was. The small figure rushed towards Fukai. The little ANBU agent had the two strands of silk coiled tight around her forearm. The silver haired male held the advantage when it came to reach, an upward swing blocked the path of the woman, who promptly sidestepped to the left. Fukai would step back and swivel to strike across the woman’s chest. She ducked again and jumped at Fukai’s gut. He was surprised at her agility and speed, he almost wasn’t ready to receive her. But Fukai was a natural, his instincts flowed into his reflexes and guided his body. He took a step back, sliding away from the attack while spinning his staff a half turn to intercept her small body. He was sure that his weapon would make contact, and then she disappeared.

Fukai looked up to see the mouse masked lady sailing back towards her partner. The boar masked man had yanked on the strands and caused her to return to his location. With deft acrobatics, she twisted and landed on his shoulders. Fukai watched wide eyed, starting to realise what the strange set up was capable of. To pull off this sort of fighting technique would require not only athletic mastery on both of their parts, but also a synchronised performance that made them more than the sum of their parts. Fukai had to bring the fight to them, he couldn’t wait for them to back him into a corner.

He ran at the two person high tower that stood before him, only to get interrupted by a large pillar of earth that had erupted from beneath the floorboards. It was right below Fukai’s front foot, the upward force had made him swivel away from the pillar, teetering and out of balance. He didn’t have a chance to recover, as the mouse masked woman was gliding over him, falling down to strike at Fukai’s shoulder with a spinning kick. Fukai crumpled to the ground underneath the force of the blow, the woman gracefully returning to the floor before accelerating forward to follow up. The kick had been infused with chakra, Fukai could feel fuuton swirling around his body and knocking him off balance. There was no way he could get back in a stance that would allow a defense without a little help.

He was in quite the predicament. He needed to find a way to relieve the pressure that the duo were exerting. Fukai decided to bring out his trump card. He flowed chakra throughout his blood red scarf, bringing it to life. It sharpened and grew, moving and splitting like the many heads of a hydra. Fukai sent two strands toward the ground, and three to intercept the attacker. The groundward scarf ends flew straight into the earth, their chakra sharpened points digging in and planting roots, stabilising himself as he attempted to recover his position. The forward ends snaked towards her. Unexpecting the attack coming from her disabled foe, she struggled to avoid the onslaught. Once again, the boar masked man yanked on the silk rope and pulled her back. The red fabric grasped at the target, managing to carve wounds into the woman’s right arm and left oblique.

The two sides were once again separated. Fukai checked his shoulder with a small shrug. Pain shot up his neck. The ligaments were badly damaged. He wouldn’t be able to use his left shoulder too much from here on out, but he reckoned he could still use his left arm to support his weapon with a bit of exertion. He had to admit, he was impressed. He could see how effective this style was, and how it could easily reap some unexpected results. Looking across at the two ANBU operatives, it didn’t look like they were going to be giving up any time soon.

Once again Fukai would advance and the woman would come to meet him. The male would once again stamp his foot, this time the earth pillar would rise up below his partners foot, and she smoothly launched herself off of it and turned herself into a missile. At this range, he would not be able to avoid it. He would explode fuuton chakra out of his pores and surround himself with it. The force of wind pushed him sideways and then forwards to avoid the attack. When cutting down a tree, you always go for the trunk. Instead of fighting back the female every time, he decided to go for the man in the back. Fukai sped forward at blinding speed, crutching his staff in his right arm and levelling it at the man in front of him like a lance. But these were elite agents, even against the fastest opponents, they would be able to fight back. The boar masked man pulled on the silk scarf to whip his partner back at Fukai. Then he stomped the ground and set up a stone wall in Fukai’s path. The purple eyed jounin would not be able to reach the man by going around the pillar before the woman came back around. He would just have to go through it.

Chakra flowed freely through his weapon, coating it and condensing into a conical structure. A chakra lance had formed. Levelled at the stone wall, Fukai ran straight at it. He smashed through it like it was nothing, continuing at the unprepared target. His scarf shot out from both directions at the pair of targets, consuming them in a flurry of razor threads. The battle stood still. The chakra lance hung an inch away from the man’s jugular, while the woman was held up in the air by the web of red. Fukai spoke with a puffed breath. “This fight is over.”

The building would erupt into a cacophony of objection, but in the end, the leader would keep to his word. The pair of agents bent their knee and promised to return to their duties. While the allegiance may be a thin one, it was a start. Fukai now had his own promises to keep.
