Joruri's eyes opened up and he sat up in his bed, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. Slowing extricating himself from his bed, he looked at the mess that he had created the night before as he prepared himself to leave for the Chunnin Exams and practice a few more techniques.

It was a large room, as far as bedrooms went. Large, but relatively empty. Within his own room he contained and occasionally entertained a book from his miniature library that was literally one book shelf, but was overflowing with books. There were even books on the top of the bookcase, they weren't even supposed to go up there! He had even went as far as to place them beside the bookcase, horizontally on both sides. Multiple piles, at least three containing more than two dozen books. When he had first became a genin he had had a plan for all of those books. It intertwined with reading them, and perfecting the ninja arts that they contained. You see, at least ninety percent of the books within his makeshift library weren't books for entertainment and pleasure. They were for education purposes, a vast collection of education all in his bedroom.

Who would've thought?

At a reasonable height were the books that he usually read that explained in detail his Clan's history and it's multiple sub-branches. Truth be told, it actually interested him. He knew his clan had originated within Sunagakure, or whatever fertile land mass that was located there, and it even went as far as to speculate that there were well known historical shinobi that could've potentially possessed the Magnet Release, or even had techniques that were similar to the point that they could've if they trained it exclusively.

Anyways, back to the rest of Joruri's morning.

He showered and ate relatively quickly in the early morning. Usually, he wouldn't wake up this early unless it was to head towards the Konoha Hospital so that he may receive a weekly check up on his brain, but those days were long gone. That mission, that night was long gone. He didn't have to worry about it.

Yesterday, he had received a message from a chunin after he was coming back from training that he was placed on a squad. The same one as Shinako he realized when he had read the missive.

Uchiha? Tenzo? Who is this guy? His knowledge of the Jonin of the village was practically nil, and he was surprised to have been picked up by a shinobi that he had never heard of, and to add to that he was a Uchiha? Joruri had never seen a sharingan in action, and he was all about the wild life and he hoped that after the Chunin Exams, they'd all be able to be deployed on dangerous missions. I want to see a sharingan. He remembered thinking to himself when he had first read the letter from his new sensei. His eyes went over his own, and he nodded, then he saw Nara Shinako's name on it and he grinned. Had they already made a reputation for themselves after announcing they were creating their own two-man genin team? Well, it was technically a one man, one woman sort of thing. And he chuckled at his own horrendous humour. I'm not surprised. Shinako-chan's tactics are excellent, especially for a Nara. If they were to meet in the Chunin Exams, Jo wasn't sure he'd be able to keep up with her genjutsu. She focuses on medium to long range attacks. My own techniques vary, and with this... He had forgotten the name, but he could only imagine red hair.

After he had eaten and cleaned himself to even beyond a respectable degree, he re-entered his bedroom and retrieved the letter that he had received from the Chunnin. Uzumaki Manami... Huh? Rolling up the scroll and placing it in the small of his back, lying vertical on his spinal cord and held there by his white sash,  he thought back. "This name sound so familiar." He muttered aloud, trying to put a face and figure to the name.

"It is a girl's name... At least it sounds like one." He muttered.

Deep within the house, he heard someone cry out. "Joruri, are you talking to me!?" His eyes snapped towards the half open doorway as he raised an eyebrow. It happened all the time when he talked to himself. Why was it that all mothers possessed a hearing technique that allows them to hear the slightest word. He pushed a hand through his mess of hair, and left his messy room the way it was as he walked out the door. He could just clean it when he got back home, or his mother could and complain to him about how he wasn't a guest in that household.

Once he was safely outside, he straightened out his clothes, checked for the letter that was in the small of his back, and when he felt it he rolled his shoulders back and pushed a stray lock of his white hair out of his eyes. He walked down the short steps quickly, shoved his hands into his pockets, kicked a rock and he was outside of the gates that sealed in his home on the far side of the Village.

Once exiting from behind the walls that sealed his home, he closed the gate behind him and stopped, thinking to himself. It's so early, and yet the sun is so bright. He shrugged to himself as he turned to the left, and then to the right and after a short argument with himself he turned to the right. After all, that was going to take him to the Hokage Mountain after all, and atop of the Hokage Mountain he'd be able to see the entire Village. He hadn't done it in such a long time, and he knew that it'd be good training to run up and down the steps countless times.

Glancing behind him, he saw a ninja with a flak jacket leaping over head in the tree branches and a small smiled cracked over his face. Already the shinobi are returning and going on missions. He chuckled softly, and watched as a blur finally got too far for him to see that headed for the main part of the Village. Probably going to the Administration Building to turn in whatever mission they were on.

Joruri scratched the back of his head.

Whilst he had been a genin, he had thought a lot about it, and he knew that he wanted to be a ninja like the one that he had just seen. Leaving in the wee hours in the morning, and returning in those hours? In truth, he didn't like the parts about getting no sleep, but it all seemed so exciting. Say, what could they have possibly been doing that was so important for them to skip out on sleep, or not get a full night's sleep. Hopefully hunting deserters. He thought ruefully.

He had his reasons, everyone did. It was just up to those same people to decide whether they agreed with yours or not.

With the announcement of the Chunnin Exams and them being located in Kumogakure, it was starting to get to Joruri. Although he wouldn't say anything out loud, the fact that there were so many genin from his own village attending, it made him want to win even more. After his spar with Shinako, he knew he was going to have to pick up the slack and even surpass her Inton techniques, but how?

Damn

The early morning air was slightly chilly, but it felt nice on his flesh.

Wandering along the streets of Konohagakure and taking in the sights and sounds was the kind of relaxation she had needed for quite some time. Between the approaching Chunnin Exams and that spar with Shinako, the rising tensions between the various villages and the like, on top of his realization that he was horrendously prepared for any sort of life threatening mission or opponent, the walk was a good idea.

Moving through the village and smiling to those that made eye contact with him as he passed, he took note of how friendly the inhabitants of this land were. It's like a gigantic extended family. The Hidden Leaf Village's shinobi are probably the ninja with the closest ties with each other. He knew that was proven through the village's existence. Based off of the legendary Ino - Shika - Cho Formation, the original formation, and then performed by their children who had apparently lived up to their family's name. He remembered back when he had first read about the legendary Ino - Shika - Cho formation. Their synergy was magnificent, he could only imagine it. His thoughts when he had first read about them, and then reading of their children being placed on the same squad. The Hokage at the time made the best decision he could by doing that it seems. He chuckled as he reminisced through the streets.

When he looked up, he took note of the Administration Building, and walked past it as he headed towards Hokage Mountain. Behind and to either side of the Administration Building which was also known as the Village's Academy, were the stairs to go up to the top of Hokage Mountain.

Stopping at the base of the stairs, he looked up to the face of the mountain, but because of where he was located, he couldn't see the faces of the past Hokage's, and he sighed in disappointment and started his slow trudge up the stairs to get to the top.

Pulling a single out of his pocket, he pushed a lock of white hair that had slipped into his vision, and he continued upwards and off of the first staircase with a single hand in his pocket.

Glancing towards the village, every single step that he took gradually raised him higher above the rest of the village, and after every single step he felt as if he were getting stronger. As if he were rising above his peers, in this Village and others. I can't be outdone. I won't be the one to be removed from the Exams in the First Round. He shook his head. His face was even beginning to feel warm at the thought of losing his first fight.

Finally getting off of the last staircase that would take him to the top of Hokage Mountain, he felt that he had passed a threshold that put him above his peers. Even though he had done nothing except one of the most basic functions a human was capable of doing, he smiled brightly into the sun. Was his confidence back after that walk? No, of course not. But on that walk, he had found his nerve to continue training, harder than ever, he would hurt himself if it was going to benefit him.

The Kansen-Suru walked over the rocks the mountain face that held the faces of the Hokage.  In that instant he had forgotten the name of the first, second, and third Hokages, but in the grand scheme of things they didn't seem that important. He simply wanted somewhere to sit peacefully and enjoy the time. Finding a suitable spot nearest what appeared to be the largest head, he dropped down to the ground, his legs crossed and back slouched as he moved as close as he dared towards the edge of the head that he was on. His eyes closed and his chin rested against his chin as he allowed himself to slip into a light sleep. The world grew quiet around him, leaving only the faintest breeze to pass through his mind.

A great deal of time had passed since he first began this journey. His light slumber was more of a 'meditation' than anything else. So, his meditation allowed his mind to relax and relive the past in one rapid slideshow. He had started at the Academy at a relatively older age. Starting when he immediately became twelve, Joruri while just a child had multiple opportunities to sign up for the Academy, but he had declined his father's insistence countless times, preferring to practice in the safety of his home and with his father's tutelage rather than strangers. He had been gifted as a Jiton user and proved to be a spectacular wind and earth user as well. In his free time, to which he used all of practicing one of his two chakra natures. His wind style training then progressed substantially, favoring that as his main element over earth and his magnet release kekkei genkai. And upon being promoted to a Genin level five years later, was assigned his first squad, the man that would continue his training as a shinobi was known as Risako, and simultaneously becoming one of his best friends. Despite his tragic death not more than five years into his training he was recently reassigned and trained under now the Hidden Leaf Village Jonin Uchiha Tenzo. Joruri had participated in countless missions and trained countless techniques, and was continuing to train even more.

His eyes snapped open as a small boy poked him, laughing gleefully as he trotted away, satisfied that he had interrupted what looked like a peaceful slumber. He smiled at the small child as he looked back, sticking his tongue out playfully at him, and his laughter the only reply as he continued on his way. He stood from the spot he had been resting and continued on his journey through the Village via the staircase that he had come up. When his first squad had been decimated he had been but a child. He was older now. Maybe it time to start acting and looking the part.

After descending from the top of Hokage Mountain, he descended into the Village's Market Place, and headed to a nearby barber shop. His hair was growing long, and he began to think it was going to be an impediment for the coming event.

The haircut would take a bit of time to complete. His options for new hairstyles weren't terribly intricate, nor were they flashy or exceptionally detailed, however they were after all on top of his head, and in a number of various areas which needed to look leveled and correct. So while it was less of a full head transformation, it was entirely a job for a steady hand and only a handful of minutes. While the work was being performed, Joruri would relax his body, mind, and soul, allowing himself to slide into a deeper breathing technique which allowed him to focus thoughts easier. The process was moderate in length, uncomfortable, most likely due to his restlessness, but after some time he would be able to relinquish the boredom and subdue the feeling of drowsiness that had seeped into his muscles in that brief interaction with the barber. Rubbing his hands along his arms, legs, and along his cheeks, forehead, and chin, leaving him with nothing but the serenity of empty thought.

Small bursts of visions from his so called meditation, and his previous engagement with the kunoichi Shinako would race through his mind, and he would, for a brief period, relive those memories. They were indeed eye opening, but in order to overcome the surprise and disappointment of their spar, the Kansen-Suru knew he was going to have to continue his training. Perhaps in a more physical way, rather than ninja arts. They had both induced pain upon one another, she had applied a more physical, brute force and even a delicacy with her genjutsu. While he had performed a more upfront, tactics with his kunai and wind techniques, he hadn't shown his kekkei genkai tactics. Maybe that would've changed the course of the spar, but in the end it wouldn't be worth it. Now, he was given an eye-opener to her techniques, and to defeat the woman that had begun to torment his thoughts with her beauty and tactical guile. I will defeat you, Shinako. He thought with an almost playful, but most definitely determined grin. The shinobi was going to travel with her to Kumogakure. They had made that decision together after deciding to be upon the same squad. Perhaps on this journey they'd be able to bond on a more personal level.

Not that he liked her in a more than friendly sort of way, she was attractive, but they were on a team now, and being on a team required a lot more than having your names on a paper. It means you had each others backs. When it came to missions, it meant that you'd know what each other were thinking, that they were all on the same page and would work perfectly together, their techniques being sewn with a perfection that could only be known as legendary.

Maybe our techniques could rival those of even the famed Ino - Shika - Cho. He doubted people even remembered what the technique consisted of. Truth be told, he didn't remember entirely, but it was a string of techniques that were used on each other and the enemy to protect, and to manipulate the enemy into a preferable position.

After the barber had completed his work he provided a mirror to show Joruri the haircut was just what he needed It shortened his hair as it was meant to, leaving his hair just bordering over his forehead. He smiled, it looked good. It was a unique, mature look for him, rather than the childish youth that his facial expressions and interactions with various people proved him to be, the childish characteristics he had possessed just prior were more or less gone. Perhaps more people would begin to take him seriously now. Raising from the chair within the barber's shop, Joruri provided him with a little more than the appropriate price, and left. It had only taken a few minutes, but at the end of the day it felt more like a hassle for the barber than money well spent, so he wanted to make it up to him. A tip I guess. Were his last thoughts as he smiled brightly at the barber, and exited the shop.
