Ring.

Ring. Ring.

Softly sounding, each ring of the three tiny bells rang melodiously together in perfect synchronization. To the untrained ear, it would appear to be a single note, curiously complex. The anklet had been made with precise hands, skillfully attached with three bells that differed from each other by an almost insignificant measure of size. But that was enough to change everything, altering the pitch of each bell and allowing them to all sound slightly different.

Ring.

The beautiful ringing sound would never stop. Not even if the person wearing the anklet was immobile. As long as she was still alive, still had chakra flowing through her, the bells would continue to ring in an never ending song. Such was the case with any resonating item on the body of a Kotone clan member. And as the child of the current clan head, Mikage was no exception. There was no stopping it, no escaping it. It was a gift, a blessing, something to be embraced.

Mikage sat atop of the low roof of a building, legs swinging freely over the edge. It was evening already, the intense temperatures of the desert beginning to recede, the sudden drop in temperature coming as quite the surprise to the fourteen year old. When she thought of the Land of Wind, with it's renowned desert surroundings, she had expected hot temperatures only, a constant supply of heat that would remove any requirements for thicker layers. A shiver ran through her body, but she couldn't be bothered to go find something else to cover up her small frame. Tonight, she was no longer in the present. Lilac-coloured irises were darkened in the night, staring off into the distance. Beside her, in a tattered mess, was the white rabbit plushie that she had brought with her upon arriving to Sunagakure. At the time, it had been in perfect condition. It would still be in a nice condition had she not been plagued with a sudden surge of rage earlier in the day.

What had occurred a few hours before was still fresh in her mind, but no longer brought about the same feeling of uncontrollable rage as it had at the time. She had spent most of the day wandering through the village marketplace, admiring all the pretty things that were being sold. When it came to the village interiors, to Mikage, it didn't differ much from the other villages she had visited. Bustling with people, sights, smells, sounds. This was all well and good. She attracted curious stares as she walked, her white attire drawing attention. Of course, it wasn't suitable to wear such light coloured clothing that could so easily be stained, specially when the ends of her dress occasionally dragged across the dirt and sand-filled roads. And on top of that, she was barefoot, walking without a single amount of protection for her feet. Even if it was too hot to wear shoes, the people in Sunagakure generally wore something, sandals to protect the soles of their feet against the ground which absorbed heat so well. But that didn't matter to her. Mikage thrived on the attention given to her, regardless of the reason. The fact that people had their eyes on her helped to affirm that she was still there, that she held an existence. It wasn't under a flower-selling child approached her that things went downhill. The child looked only a year or two younger than Mikage herself, a young boy holding a large basket of flowers.

She had said no. That should've been the end of it. Just a simple refusal, and then turn away, the same tactic used against any approaching vendors. But the red rose sitting right in the middle of the basket, nestled among the other flowers caught her eye. It's vibrant red, standing out against the other colors. The red rose that her sister loved so much. Delicate petals of crimson, with threatening thorns that only served to add to its beauty. The child must have noticed where her attention with directed.

"Would you like to buy it? It's a real rose, and this is the best one that I've picked all week. It will look better than that fake rose on your shoulder."

Mikage froze, gaze flickering to her shoulder, where a blue rose was sewn onto the dress. That's right. Blue roses had always been her favourite. But they didn't exist. Not unless they were artificially created. There was no such thing as a blue rose. They didn't exist. They shouldn't exist. Their color pigmentation defied the natural order of things. Just like her. Her existence defied everything, had brought about chaos, the death of her sister.

The basket of flowers was knocked to the ground, and the white-haired female simply walking away, ignoring the protests made by the child. But his words still rang through her head, repeating itself over and over as her memory dug out the words that her mother had once repeatedly uttered, mixing together in a chaos that left her feeling self-destructive. It took nearly two hours before she calmed down enough to regain rationality, the rabbit - which had thankfully become her target of choice as opposed to some stranger - a tattered mess.

[ flashback ]

There had been a day when the two sisters had snuck out alone to go flower-shopping. A blisteringly hot day in Konoha, enough to rival the temperatures in Sunagakure. Both dressed in light, summer dresses, they had slipped out of their family home, hand in hand, heading off towards the center of the village, where the population of Konoha was most concentrated. It was their mother's birthday, and it had been Misaki's idea to sneak out and buy a bouquet of flowers, knowing how much their mother cherished beautiful plants. But the fact that it had been Misaki's idea came as no surprise. Misaki had already been the creative one, the one who came up with ideas that more than often got the twins into trouble. Still, it was Misaki who everyone praised for being bright, the intelligent child who couldn't help but get into mischief because of her never slowing mind.

Not that Mikage ever minded. She was content just to be dragged around by her sister's whims, never hesitating in playing a part in whatever plan Misaki came up with. Not when her sister had decided to jump from their second level balcony into the newly built pool in their back yard, or when they added red dye into the laundry when the maid wasn't looking and everyone ended up wearing pink clothes for a week. They were eight years old, it shouldn't be a problem just to sneak out to the village for a while - even if their clan was technically unaligned with any specific village, they still lived in the Land of Fire. And so off they went, with Mikage having to wake her sister up early in the morning before everyone else was up, the twins sneaking out the front door with ease. It didn't take long for them to escape the premises of their home after leaving a hastily scribbled note to their mother, consisting of Misaki's neat handwriting and several crossed out, misspelled words.

The note said something along the lines of: "Mika and me going to Konoha for somthing sekrete secret. Be back soon. <3"

It wasn't their first time heading to the village, and it didn't take them long to find it. It was still relatively early in the morning, stores were beginning to set up, the delicious aroma of the first batch of food being prepared for the early morning guests. Mikage clutched at a small pouch, jingling every so often from the ryo being contained within. "Mika-chan, Mika look! Takoyaki! It's Takoyaki! We should get some!" Mikage followed her sister's gaze towards a nearby stall, where the enticing smell of freshly deep-fried takoyaki was being displayed. "Nee-chan, I don't think mother would approve if we ate takoyaki for breakf--" The pleading gaze in her sister's eyes made her relent immediately, erasing whatever it was that she had been saying. She could never win against her sister. Never. Mikage's troubled expression melted into a grin, catching her sister's contagious excitement. "Okay, but only a little! We can share! We still need ryo to buy the flowers, remember?"

One order of takoyaki, two ice creams, and the purchase of several little trinkets later, they finally stopped in front of a flower stall, with just barely enough money to get a handful of flowers.

Misaki was having fun. It didn't take a very observant individual to figure that out - Mikage's twin had always been quite the open book, emotions visible in her eyes, her facial expression, the way she did things. That was what made her so lively, so easily likeable. Honest, innocent Misaki.

The stall owner welcomed the twins cheerfully, waving them in and telling them to choose whatever they'd like, offering to help them arrange their choices as an additional bonus. He didn't seem at all concerned about the off chance that the twins would accidentally knock over flowers and whatnot, seeming to hold enough trust for the two girls. Hand in hand, the twins wandered around the stall, eyeing the huge variety of flowers on display. And that's where their difference became rather apparent. Misaki, who was all for vibrant, lively colours, pointed excitedly at the reds, pinks, and yellows ; the roses, carnations, tulips. Mikage, who quietly admired the pale whites, soft violets, or species with a fascinating mix of various colours. But Mikage didn't mind if they didn't choose the ones she liked, she knew her mother didn't approve of them anyways. It was simply enough to just be able to admire these beautiful flowers - and it wasn't as though the ones Misaki was about to choose were ugly. They were still aesthetically pleasing, beautiful.

After a while, in which lots of time was devoted to choosing only the best flowers from each batch, they had a small bouquet tied together with a simple pink ribbon, handled carefully by Misaki as they exited the shop, paying with the remaining amount of ryo that they had started with at the beginning of the day. At this point, it had already been several hours since they left the house, any later and their parents would start sending out emergency patrols to look for them. There was no point in staying out any longer anyways, they no longer had money to do as they liked, and the flowers would get crushed if they didn't take them home quickly and put them in water. And so, via a silent agreement that was made by what others would call twins telepathy, they began heading home, one excited to show their mother the present, the other simply happy to be back and no longer breaking rules.

That is, until Mikage became aware of someone following behind them as they walked along a quiet path upon exiting the main village walls. She remained silent at first, knowing that it would be a matter of time before Misaki registered the extra presence as well. Even if Misaki wasn't as talented as Mikage, the blood of the Kotone Clan flowed through them both, and their matching anklets rang with the same kekkei genkai ability. And just as she expected, Misaki would suddenly turn to cast a sidelong glance at her sister, acknowledging that she was also aware that they were no longer alone … there appeared to be someone trailing after them. Squeezing her sister's hand once, Mikage gave a slight, almost imperceptible nod to her sister, a vague signal not understood by anyone but the twins themselves. Misaki let go of Mikage's hand, and almost at once, began releasing a thick layer of mist around them, removing the option of sight entirely as it blotted out their surroundings.

That was another thing different about the twins. While Mikage exhibited an affinity towards Fuuton and Raiton, Misaki was almost definitely aligned to Fuuton and Suiton.

[ooc note: this is all flashback, and Misaki is a NPC, so not putting chakra count / jutsu.]
